Beware and ask for a renovated room!
davidkJ86IL (Hagerstown, Maryland) on Mar 21, 2024
We were really looking forward to staying here as my sister and her husband stayed here last July. We were given a standard room on the first floor when we got there. Upon entering our room, the horrible smell of mold and mildew was overwhelming. We opened our patio door to try and air some things out, to give it a chance. It did not help. The shower's plumbing was coming out of the wall, and half of the bathtub coating was peeling off. I went back down to the front desk and was informed that the building we were assigned to was the last building that needed to be refurbished, which would happen later this year. I asked if we could be moved to one of the renovated buildings, and they said they had no rooms available in those buildings. The front desk staff person was very professional and friendly but limited in how to help. She gave us a choice of another room on the first floor or a room on the second floor in the same building that has not been refurbished yet. We chose the room on the second floor as the mildew/moldy smell was not as bad, and the bathtub was not peeling off as much. The hotel's outside premises were very nice, and the bar was good. At the end of our stay, I called the front desk to see if we could move our check-out time from 11 am to 12 pm, and I was told probably not, but I could call again in the morning to see. I thought the least the hotel could do was to allow us a one-hour delayed check out, seeing that the rooms we had to stay in were so smelly and falling apart. Kauai was our favorite island we visited (and we will be coming back to this island) but our least favorite hotel. It was disappointing, as this was the hotel I was looking forward to staying in since my sister loved it, but they were put in one of the refurbished rooms. Maybe this will all improve after this building is renovated. While the staff was nice and professional, they did not go out of their way to remedy the situation or accommodate us in other ways. We have stayed in hotels all over the world, and this is the first negative review I have ever written about a hotel. If you plan on staying here, make sure to ask for one of the renovated buildings, and you will be fine.
Fun hotel with bikes near bike path!
Elizabeth A (Phoenix, Arizona) on Mar 21, 2024
This hotel is right on the beach! It also has a large lawn area with free games and yoga for a small fee. There is a bike path along the ocean that goes for miles - we borrowed the free bikes (up to 4 hours allowed on 1st come first served basis) and had such a fabulous ride. We saw seals (sea lions?) sunbathing, did some whale watching, stopped at the fruit vendor for a cold coconut, and ate a picnic lunch. Highly recommend taking this path for a walk, run or leisurely bike ride! The restaurants in the marketplace adjacent are handy and tasty, especially the seafood at the Sleepy Giant Grill. The only slight disappointment /surprise was that we could not enjoy the beachfront tables at the hotel restaurant with our drinks from the bar unless we ordered food, even at non-busy times. There was a picnic table available on the lawn however, so not a big deal. Our Oceanview room was very clean, and were recently updated. I hope we get to return in the future!
Great price for great stay

Friendly staff, room and vicinities are clean, valet is prompt and free! Novela was very helpful at check-in. Staff were accommodating all times of day. Amazing drinks live music and service at Lava Lava. View didn’t really exist where we stayed but easy access to beach.
As good as advertised

Kauai Shores has a mission statement posted in the office that says something about being the best 3 star hotel and they hit that on the mark. If you are looking for a luxurious resort this is not the place for you but if you like comfort, cleanliness, and convenience, you will enjoy your stay. My wife lost her room key on the first day and they immediately replaced it with a wristband, which we greatly appreciated. Our room was simple but spacious and clean and we had a small patio that we used every day and even though we were one of the buildings further from the shore we were close enough that we could easily walk every morning along the beach to enjoy the sunrise. The only negative is tight parking but the valets are quick and professional.
Don’t Stay Anywhere Else

This place is incredible! I can’t say enough good things! I’ll split this review up into categories. Room: Clean spacious, well stocked, and QUIET! We never heard our neighbors talking once. The only noise we heard was an occasional door closing. Beach: Clean, not crowded, and had lounge chairs on the beach for easy access. Beach towels available at the front desk. Saw a baby monk seal resting on shore and whales breaching. Water is a little rough and there are rocks close to the shore, but we weren’t in the water much. Hotel: Very friendly staff! Grounds are well kept and BEAUTIFUL! Free morning yoga every day and bike rentals! Lots of couples and some larger groups at the hotel. Brewery, coffee shop, bourbon bar, sushi, food trucks, and souvenir shops ALL within walking distance! Great location on the island! Lava Lava Beach Club: Saved the best for last. This restaurant/bar is THE BEST! The bartenders are creative and attentive. Would specifically like to compliment Nilo and James! Always making us fun drinks with fresh fruit! Food is great too! Every time we left the hotel we were excited to come back. We actually spent 2 days NOT leaving the hotel since we liked it so much! Not to mention affordable as heck compared to other hotels, but not lacking in anything!
