Nice beachfront, caution re “garden view” rooms

Stayed for 2 nights for exploring the east side of the island. The hotel has something of a Palm Springs vibe in terms of the buikdings’ decor. The lobby is newly updated and modern, while the hotel wings with the rooms are older and, although refreshed with paint, are wearing when you look closer (eg, washrooms). But comfortable. And having it’s own direct beach area was excellent (not many loungers available but the supplied beach towels sufficient). And convenient location close to town. Recommend people try Kenji’s burgers, Java Kai (coffee and breakfast) and Nom Kauai (breakfast). People have mentioned parking is tight - yes, the stalls require you to pay attention to the lines, but during our stay there was adequate parking available. Only really got busy one weekend evening (perhaps people going to the Lava Beach Club for a meal). One disappointment I had was the room category. We paid to ‘upgrade’ to a “Garden View” room. Our view was of the neighboring complex directly across the fence line (I’ll include a photo); no garden per se. Definitely feel it wasn’t worth paying extra for that room given the particular room we got; others may be better. And the other areas where there is a “garden” does not give a lush vegetation view; rather, it really means you don’t face the parking or the pool and there might be some bushes or trees. Just temper your expectations in that regard.

Good value for money and comfy bed

Really enjoyed our stay here. Loved the fresh decor and super comfy bed. The room was quiet, the staff were really helpful and the service was good. We had a garden view room on the ground floor which was great for my mobility issues. The location right on the beach front is fabulous. While relaxing in the room a 'beach view' is not necessary when the beach is only a few steps away! and I found the garden view relaxing. The hot tub was a real bonus and we loved the pool, fire pits, lawn games and would be really happy to stay again Kauai Shores. Close proximity to good restaurants, and the Lava Lava Beach Club has the best cocktails and Happy Hour-with really good food prices as well. Also really good breakfast meals. If you want good good value for money, spotlessly clean rooms and comfy beds this is the place to stay.

We were in the Lani bldg. The entire place is a throwback to the 60's, from the "Elvis" staircases, to the picture opportunities. The color scheme is charming, and we loved the lawn games, pools, hot tub, lava pits, live music and hula, daily yoga, and the beach bar/restaurant. This is not the Hilton or deluxe- it is a decent value with local charm, super convenient to Fern Grotto, the Hawaiian village, Wailua river and Opaeeka Falls.. with easy access to roads and shopping/dining.

A perfect visit for nine nights, wonderful staff, great room and service I'd return with no problem. The hotel was just as pictured on the website and offered everything we needed for a restful visit. The small kitchen was just perfect, our room was spotless and the AC was wonderful. Loved the bath products too.

If this is your once in a lifetime vacation, be aware and read some of the one star reviews. A lot of them cover our feeling exactly. This place is rough. Old and tired. Moldy carpet, raggedy bathroom, etc, like the reviews say. We don’t settle for that. And don’t think your ocean view room has a view of the ocean. Well, you might have an ocean view patio if you lean out. But when you look at their website, you probably think your room will have a view of the ocean. Not so, it’s two long buildings facing each other over a common lawn area. That’s your view. I would say your Hawaii hotel is not the item where you want to save a buck. We left after the second night. Would have left after only one, but couldn’t find a place. This is great for some people - read these 5 star reviews. Fine. But my take is, it’s a 70’s motel, in bad shape. Had we stayed it would have overshadowed our entire trip. Didn’t want to come home to this every night. So we spent one of our vacation days calling around, then moving. You can’t get that time back. FYI, ended up at the Sheraton in Poipu. Didn’t think we were ‘resort people’, but it is beautiful and we loved it. Ask for Building 1, not over the pool. You get a private ocean view, for real. Didn’t save a buck, but had a great vacation. Ironically, the best breakfast of our trip was at Lava Lava Beach Club, in the Kauai Shores (different ownership). Sitting with your feet in the sand, under the palms. Fantastic. Just don’t stay at the hotel.
