Great Place to Visit During the COVID Pandemic

This is a great resort, but the COVID Pandemic makes some things ever greater, and some things less great, which is why I caveat the review. The property is beautiful, with a great location directly on the beach, and immaculately maintained. The staff is extremely attentive and always looking to help. Visiting during the pandemic meant a few changes from the norm because occupancy was around 10%. This meant plenty of quiet (could be good or bad depending on your desires); pools almost empty; beaches empty; no waiting for restaurant seating; and bar wait staff are very attentive with drinks flowing quickly. On the down side, with such low occupancy they cannot afford to keep all of the resort restaurants open so we had to check the front desk every day to see which 1-2 restaurants would be open for dinner, and then register for certain seatings. This was not the variety we are used to in other years, but this was the ONLY down side of the pandemic and totally understandable. The above positives outweighed the one negative by far.

Fantastic trip to an amazing resort

We had the awesome experience to re-visit the beautiful Barcelo Gran Faro in San Jose del Cabo July 15th-22nd. Kenny and I were there 9 years ago (I believe before Barcelo owned it). I have terminal cancer and re-visiting was on my “bucket list”. My husband Kenny also needed some extreme dental work at Soft Dental Clinic. Due to COVID-19 we had to schedule 4 times but finally made it! Upon arrival, we were told we had been upgraded from the Sol Bldg room to an ocean front room. Unfortunately, that room did not have a bathtub; I have serious pain from the cancer and baths help so much. Oscar (our concierge), immediately upgraded us again to a beautiful Jr. Suite; what an amazing room. The Gran Faro staff, everyone from Oscar (our concierge), front desk personnel, housekeeping, wait staff (especially Manuel), and spa staff were amazing! Both Kenny and I had numerous spa treatments that were top notch (often it seems resort spa treatments are mediocre). Shout out to Mercedes and Vanessa. The grounds and beach were immaculate. The beach vendors were polite, not pushy and we appreciated that only one vendor at a time approached us. We did purchase items we really didn’t need such as sunglasses and hats but we wanted to support the local economy that had been hit so far. The COVID-19 procedures made us feel very safe with social distancing, masks by all staff, taking of temperatures and hand sanitizing were above anything we have had in the US. The ONLY issue we had was the food situation. We understand we arrived the very 1st day of re-opening and some challenges were to be expected. Not everyone has a smart phone to scan the barcode to get the menu and initially the wait staff did not want to give a printed menu. My suggestion is to have the menus printed and then laminated so they can easily be wiped down after each use as well as having a printed menu posted upon entrance. The buffet food was below mediocre. On Sunday there were pork cops that were so over cooked, they were unedible. Even the salad selection was badly lacking. The Italian restaurant was OK, but the Mexican was served cold. The seafood place was also mediocre. But as the days went by, the food did improve. We did do a private dinner on the beach that was amazing. I am so thankful we were able to finally make this trip. I am promoting Barcelo Gran Faro on social media. Gran Faro, keep up the good work and give kudos to all of your staff. Perhaps if I am still alive next year we will be back.

Beautiful Hotel, but they keep running out of drinks.

Beautiful Hotel, but they keep running out of drinks. Tuesday, they ran out of vodka for two days, Then on Thursday they ran out of Dark Rum for three days, During that time they ran out of all rum except spiced rum. Someone, tell the manager there"s a liquor store down the street. In regards to the beach and ocean. The beach is lovely but the surf and undertow make it so you cannot swim in the water. This is the second Barcelo I have been to where ocean swimming was almost impossible. As to recommending this hotel other than those items, The hotel was at that time (spring break) quiet and boring. So if you wish to go to a hotel all inclusive that's quiet, doesn't stock your beverage or care and where the water at the beach is unswimable come to Barcelo. Oh and remember you will pay a higher price for the experience.

    Great location, skip dinner buffets

The facility is lovely, with pools, easy beach access, and charming staff at breakfast and lunch, where the buffets are perfectly fine. But skip the dinner buffet whenever possible--it is as mediocre as you'll find anywhere. Depending on the level of room you choose, you can eat at one of the a la carte restaurants, meaning you order from a menu. But you must make a reservation by a certain time, which we were not told at check-in. So we had boring food from steam tables. Also--if you're paying for an upgraded room, don't let them put you next to the Presidential Suite. Because it is large, it's the natural place for groups to gather which equals noise. On the bright side, it is all-inclusive, but still--TIP THE HOUSEKEEPING STAFF.
