Accused of smoking. Got $2000 fine

Maps14063156568 (Toronto, Canada) on Apr 13, 2024

Our experience here was absolutely terrible. We paid the extra for a swim up room. There is no privacy and no sun in the swim up rooms. People were hanging out in front of our room drinking and smoking and we got a $2000 fine for it. They accused us of smoking in our room which is absolutely not true. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Our room had a leak in the ceiling from the room above. Bars have one bartender and it takes forever to get a drink because kids also go to the bars for refreshments. Always a line up. Food is okay. Wifi sucks. Don’t fall for the mini bar in your room. You get 4 warm beers a day. We definitely will never come back here.

Genuine Review of a Family Experience in the Junior Swim out suite

Kristin G (Edmonton, Canada) on Apr 12, 2024

As many reviews wrote whether be good, or bad, there is definitely some room to grow for this resort. My husband and I booked the trip through sunwing to celebrate my 30th, my husbands 40th & my step sons 10th birthday this year! Quite an iconic year in the house! We have traveled to various parts of Mexico going to resorts twice a year, and this resort unfortunately did not hit the spot for the traditional price point of most rooms. When booking with sunwing, the experience was fantastic as always! The bus from the airport was great because you ARE the first stop for drop offs, which in our experience is quite rare! Bus ride from the airport during rush hour was approx. 35 minutes. Upon arrival, because we had the upgraded suite we were brought to a private room on the swim out floor for check in, avoiding the traditional long line ups. The ALTITUDE lounge comes with snacks (pastries, meats, cheeses, a coffee maker & as my step son says - the BEST nutella cinnamon buns he's EVER had!). Check in was a bit difficult as there was a bit of a language barrier, nothing that we could not use google translate to work through. Once we got into our room, we were dissapointed that the pull out couch was not set up as our notes were that there was 3 in the room, minor blip that could have made the initial check in above and beyond as the swim out rooms are the upgraded rooms within the resort. With the upgrade, we were able to book all of our A La Cartes from Wednesday-Sunday. Reading previous reviews and speaking to guests on site, if you are in the suites (not swim out), or rooms you will need to go to the lobby at 7am to secure your A La Carte daily with the concierge desk, which we did speak to a few people and they did have to wait in line for quite sometime to get A La Carte. The resort is small in comparison to most resorts. It is rumoured that it used to be a time share resort, which during the day you can see salesmen meeting with guests/people about timeshare opportunities. Some of the rooms in the resort are still timeshares to date. As we were a family our option was the Ocean or the main family pool. The ocean is quite rough as there was a red and purple flag up the entire time we were there. We did try to have the beach one afternoon which was fun, however, there is no rope or barrier for the "sales people" to consistently try to get you to purchase their items. Which again, is totally fine but after 1.5 hours of trying to play card games, or read a book continually telling someone no got quite annoying. Whereas, most resorts we've been to there is a bit of a barrier so that you're able to enjoy some quiet time on the beach. The family pool is fun with the two basketball hoops for our 10 year old that kept him occupied during the day! I will note, the first four days that we were there we did get in during Mexico's spring break. There are notes posted throughout the resort about saving chairs, which is not followed. We tried to get 2 chairs in the shade the first two days but even waking up at 6:45 AM to "break the rules" and put towels down to secure a space for our Canadian winter skin there was no luck as everything was taken. We did ask for towels to be removed by staff as it was 1PM and no one was in the spots and got told there was nothing they could do. The teens club is a great quiet time for the younger ones! Last week they did adjust the teens club down to 10 years old which was great for our little guy as he made a friend with a kid that was 14! I will note, any activities the kids clubs put on are still 13+ (batting cages, bike tours, etc.) The food... this is the big reason why I am giving this resort a 4* in lieu of higher. Food for myself, is a huge portion of a trip. We found the buffet at most times quite inedible. Breakfast our step son went to the nutella cinamon buns in the Altitude lounge instead of breakfast and for my husband and I it was fruit and shredded hash browns. Lunch consisted of the two snack shacks which served hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, and fried fish. Dinner again, we ate mostly at A La Cartes which The Grille, and the Italian (both located in the same restaurant) were by far the best! Very family friendly, but also attractive to a foodie! The Mexican A La Carte was good, the AYAMI Restaurant was a miss but a super cute venue! Personal opinion - skip the ramen in the Ayami , as there is no taste aside from a green tea tinge to it. The service staff was great to deal with, very friendly and attentive! Plates cleared, drinks filled and our servers at the Grill & the Italian cuisine were amazing! Entertainment for the resort is quite minimal and confusing. There were some days the main board going to the breakfast buffet said one thing, then another thing would be happening instead? The consistent entertainment was the nigh time entertainment which was on the smaller scale, but still captivated. We came in on the Michael Jackson night which was so fun! The movie night was great for the smaller kids, and allowed for the parents to go to the Rooftop .. while still keeping an eye! The rooftop was gorgeous, and so well done! Check-out was a breeze! Our airport transportation was not until 3PM. Again, reading previous reviews I was worried at checkout that they would kick us out of the room/cut our bracelets. That was not the case, we were able to get a really late checkout of 2PM from the room allowing us to shower before the airport and casually pack up. Our bracelets were not cut until we went to leave allowing us to have lunch at the buffet before traveling. Pros: - Swim out room was an exceptional upgrade for our room. We did find a deal which made it much more approachable. However, our step son stayed out in the space until 11:30 PM with his buddy he made pretty much every night. Patrons at the hotel loved it and played pass with them from the top of the stairs which was hilarious to watch. having the opportunity for the Altitude club was a must for us! - A bit off of the normal, but the BEST massage I have, and my husband, and everyone we talked to at the resort ever in our lives was the two ladies on the beach. It is 500 pesos for 1 hour. They give you the option of relaxing, medium or healing. WOW! Not only are the massages at the spa $170 USD, which is a jump scare - but I would argue these are just as good, if not better! Both ladies figured out my sciatic pain and I have never felt better! - Resort is clean, there are a lot of staff consistently cleaning around the resort throughout the day. The room was made up daily. - Teens club dropping the age, along with the basketball hoops made for entertaining a tween much more effortless! - 2x snack shacks start at 11:30 am! Cons: - As reviews state - wifi .. sucks.. My husband and I both need some sort of internet access to keep up with work (yay 200+ emails coming home). Even with full strength wifi in the Altitude club we were left 5 minutes / email trying to forward or send off to clients. - Food, as mentioned before this is why I gave it a 4* out of 5 as it is a big importance to us for an all inclusive week. Quirks: - Get your towels before you go to the room, the towel shack opened up at inconsistent times. Best to just grab the night before! - Complimentary room service for Altitude! 100 pesos for regular rooms. In our opinion, skip breakfast for room service but late night snacks are a must! At peak times took 25-30 min. - Wake up early to snag A La Carte if not in the swim out suites, if in the swim outs, book all of them from arrival - Sunday morning, then book for remainder of your stay. - Bring a large travel mug as lines do end up being a bit of a pain in the butt for drinks. Servers come out around 1PM for the pool / ocean! - There is not a lot of shady spots on the resort come mid afternoon around the pool (adult incl) - If you have teeny ones and trying to work around nap time. I would suggest going higher up or the ocean view suites as 2-4PM is when the music/activities are at the family pool which they do have the speakers on full blast closest to the hotel. We did have a few people we met struggling with nap time due to this.

Good Vacation

Sara C (Vancouver, Canada) on Apr 08, 2024

Overall a good stay. The family travelled there for spring break, it is definitely a family resort. Our ocean front junior suite had a beautiful view, however the room itself was a little dated. If you manage to stay in the main tower, the rooms there seems to be newly renovated. Rooms were clean and the landscaping well manicured. There is always something to eat throughout the day. The only down side is that a la carte reservations are difficult to get unless you are "altitude" status. However, altitude did not have that much more perks. Lined up early one morning well before the line opened and still unable to get a reservation. Luckily, all the food offered on the resort is decent. It's not gourmet but gets the job done. There is something to eat for everyone. The ONE night we did have reservations at the Asian restaurant, it was quite disappointing. Our friends arrived shortly before we did. They took their order and their food came when we sat down. The whole dinner experience was rushed. Our kid was still mid eating when his plate was cleared from the table. Didn't understand the rush as we were in the last time slot. Pool chairs were also hard to come by, but not a huge deal as something generally frees up. It would be much easier if the umbrellas moved and were not fixed down to the ground. Shaded areas were limited at both family and adult pools. The service received from the bartenders and servers otherwise had been great. Some of them were very attentive and we truly appreciated their hard work and service. The entertainment was well planned. However, karaoke night was a little deafening. It would be suggestable to keep adults and children karaoke time separate. Go in with little expectations and you will have a good time.

Love the staff, location!

We just got home from this resort yesterday. We stayed there for two weeks from March 23- April 6th. It was a fantastic stay and we’re so happy and excited to go back next year. When we first arrived, the room we stayed in for the first night had some issues so I had gone down to speak with concierge Marco Solis. He took me to see another room that was available that was fantastic for us. It was so comfortable with a fantastic view. We were so lucky to have met Marco because he really was one of the highlights of our stay. He was so professional yet very personable and kind. We enjoyed talking to him daily out and about by the pool and he always assisted us with any questions we had and always went above and beyond. We could see his interactions with others, always looked to be the same top-notch service . He really is a wonderful asset to this hotel. We went to all four of the à la carts and particularly enjoyed the Asian as well as the Mexican. we are very happy with the buffet for breakfast, and really enjoyed the fish tacos near the pool at lunchtimes. A real highlight for my husband was on this Saturday when they made paella by the pool! it was probably the best tasting thing we had on the whole trip! We loved being able to walk up the beach to Bucerias as well as the friends that had joined us during the trip for a week really enjoyed walking the path to Bucerias. We really did find the location of this hotel to be ideal for us . Our housekeeping was fantastic with no concerns at all. Our daily maid was Marychuy and she was so sweet and always did a great job. We spent a lot of our time at the adults pool with an incredible view of the ocean and the beach and we really enjoyed the pool waiters and the fantastic drinks. We had Enrique and Luis a lot and they were incredible with such great service! The trip really did exceeded all our expectations and we’re so excited for future trips there! As a caveat, we really enjoyed most aspects of our stay but I am honestly not a fan of their tiered system. The people who buy into the Altitude perk get treated a lot better in some aspects and if you do not buy into it you can pretty well forget about a la carte reservations. You may luck out after an hour- hour and a half and get a 9 pm time slot because non Altitude guests cannot book in advance like the Altitude members. Also for myself I really found it annoying having the timeshare people constantly bothering me, I purchased my holiday and to have salesmen constantly trying to sell me product was very annoying. They were sneaky about it to because they actually work for the resort with their clothing being badged for the resort!
