This was booked as a last minute trip and we were pleasantly surprised. Pros: Smaller resort Beach is beautiful, especially if you like walking the beach. Walk to the left and past the mangroves (bring your sandals) to walk the little dirt path for 3 minutes and you come to some private homes and another stunning beach....empty when we were there... Walk to the left along the beach and you can walk to Las Terrenas - 45min walk Never had a problem finding a palapa on the beach anytime we went...various times during the week. Try the quiet pool nice relaxing atmosphere. Water in the pool was cold and I like a cold pool so not a lot of swimmers. Loved the bean bag chairs at the pool Food was very good although the selection is not as large. A la carte (Rodizio) Brazilian was excellent Rooms were large (junior suite renovated room) paid additional and it was work it. Block 28 3rd floor was a nice quiet room. House keeping was very good. Only had to ask twice for something they missed. Cons: A la carte - Gormet - service was poor- had to ask for bread 2x after they delivered the appetizers....mosquitoes bitting your feet...needed to apply the bug spray they had up from for guest.. Italian food was not good and the service was poor.... Lobby bar closes at 11 ...would be nice if it was open until 11:30....Last call was not always communicated to you and a few times we missed it sitting on the side patio. People leaving towels blocking chairs at the quiet pool and never seeing them all daylong. Standouts Brazilian restaurant Staff main buffet restaurant outside on the patio. Julianna was amazing along with the team that supported her and the other waitress. Great personality and genuinely made lunches on the patio for us fun. Would definitely return again (usually don’t go to the same place twice) As with any resort trip there are some staff that out perform others. At this one we found the most of them genuinely do care. As far as cleanliness in general grounds were very clean and so were all the washrooms and sitting areas. Really impressive to see. Excursions: Took a taxi $10 usd each way... shopping, bars and places to see...we spent 3 hours and it was perfect. Booked through Transat rep...Samana, National park caves, island beach. All day note they say open bar but all they had was pop and rum....no beers....food on the island was very good and the beach was nice....note they only include two cups of beer when you get to the island for lunch....so if your a beer drinker...bring beer....luckily I had my bubba cup and they did fill it for me... 45 minute bus ride from the airport and no stops at other resorts.. Nice resort friendly staff and clean...

This review is a bit delayed as we stayed in August 2019. We were lucky with great weather - it only rained once for an hour during our two weeks stay. BEACH: as other reviewers stated, the beach is simply stunning. Calm turquoise water, lots of fish to see, good depth to swim, you can walk far in each direction... TERRITORY: very green, clean, nice variety of palm trees, flowers, and workers constantly taking care of it by cleaning and grooming... ROOM: we stayed in building 12, in Junior Suite. For 2 adults, 1 teen and 1 kid we've got a king bed, a sofa bed (comfortable) and an additional single bed. Plenty of beds of us and plenty of space. Although the building is sort of at the back of the resort, we never had to walk anywhere for more than 5 minutes. I would say don't worry about the room location if you don't have mobility issues. Our maid was impeccable - the room was cleaned when we were out, the fridge was always stocked and we got plenty of bottled water. AC worked find and we didn't have any insects. FOOD: we really liked the food in the buffets and the restaurants. What we appreciated was a good selection of fish and veggies - that's what we mostly ate. Fresh fruit was amazing - we never had such a tasty and ripe mango and I even learnt to like papaya! My only small gripe about the buffet was that air conditioning couldn't cope with the heat, as it always felt warm both inside and outside - but that was August and might be better at other times. WATER PARK: nice amenity for younger kids, was always busy in the afternoons. Conveniently there is a bar there so parents can relax while their kids are playing. POOLS: 2 smallish pools, if you are pool people you are likely not to enjoy them, we didn't use the pools because of the great beach so it's not a minus for us. PEOPLE: staff in the resort is amazing. By our third day, they knew our seating and drink preferences, were always smiling and happy. Unfortunately I don't remember the names but servers at the beach buffet and main buffet were equally amazing. Just very nice and happy people. We don't speak Spanish but we didn't feel we were lacking something because of it. Overall, the combination of beach, food, people, nice rooms is what makes us to come back - we booked a trip for the next summer! Thank you, GBP El Portillo! My only suggestion will be to the airlines - please please please have more planes servicing Samana airport. Westjet and Transat discontinued their summer flights from Toronto, so we will have to fly through Montreal... Summer is still a popular season for families with school aged kids!

This is a quality well managed all inclusive hotel in a beautiful location on the Samana Pennisula with the most stunning beach I have ever encountered at a hotel, and I have seen hundreds! Plenty of seating on the beach, great snorkelling right out front and beach walks for miles. Pool however is small if that is where you spend your time although everyone seemed to enjoy the activities at the pool. Great staff, well managed property with beautiful gardens and walkways, huge junior suite rooms and the resort is compact so no great distances to walk although shuttle service is available! They have standard rooms as well but I didn't see them. Food and drinks very good, entertainment also good.

I stayed at Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo between Dec15-Dec22 with my wife and my 11 year old son . Overall was a good experience. This is my 8th trip to a Dominican all inclusive resort, and my first in Samana. The beach is the main reason for choosing this resort. It didn’t disappoint me at all. You may not be able to secure a palapa after 7:30 in the morning, but the vegetation is abundant giving you the necessary shade. If you are snorkeling, and you have young kids this is a place to go. Pools- I didn’t spend the time in the pool, but from what I could see, this might not be your place if you are pool lover. The food- I didn’t go to any reserved restaurants, but I can say the buffet was beyond my expectation; plenty of food, and very well prepared. I will not go over what they have and what they don’t have, but If you complain of food quality, or abundance of it, you have an issue. Drinks – I have never waited too long for a drink; the quality can be improved, but again this is an all inclusive resort. The accommodation -We stayed in building 27 because we paid for a junior suite. The building is renovated; the room was very spacious with a huge bathroom. This building is at the entrance in the resort, but the walk to the beach was not too long. The maid did a good job. The day I didn't need room cleaning and I had the "do not disturbed" sight in my door, I got a courtesy call from the reception to see if everything is OK. I appreciated the care and concerns of the management. The grounds are impeccably maintained. Good job!! Shows – while the performers are good, a couple of individuals who are lacking good manners and they are often rude shall be replaced. You will easily recognize those individuals. If you are running a show, and say something is Spanish, you should be able to repeat that clearly in several other languages. If you can do that, don’t even try because you may offend some tourists. Overall I liked the resort, I would go again and recommend it to my friends.
