We enjoyed a long weekend at the Excelsior which is conveniently located on W. 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Ave., across the street from the American Museum of Natural History. The rooms are small but well appointed. Nice, clean bathrooms and plenty of towels. As is typical in New York, the room was overheated so we kept a window open. There is a buffet breakfast serving eggs, bacon, sausage, breads and pastries, fruit, juice, etc. There is also a Cuban/Peruvian restaurant on the first floor called Calle Ocho (not affiliated with the hotel) that serves good latin food. The receptionists were polite and welcoming but . . . . . upon checkout, we found the hotel had charged my credit card for $33.58 for no reason. The receptionists first tried to pass it off as a credit hold against my card. It wasn't. Neither the receptionist nor the accounting department could explain what the charge was for but it took 40 minutes of patient explanation and a phone call to American Express to get them to admit their mistake and refund the overcharge. They kept trying to get me to leave the hotel saying that everything would be worked out later. Finally, they admitted they didn't know what the charge was for and refunded the money. Be aware that this hotel has a "facilities charge" of about $22/night which is for things like the gym no matter if you use them or not. I wish I could give a higher rating to this hotel but I can't after my checkout experience.

Excellent location but basic accommodation at best.

The best things about this property are the location and staff, but the facility itself is old, worn, and tired. We were scheduled for a sleepover at the Museum of Natural History which is directly across the street and I wanted a safe backup - just in case. An ideal location for exploring Central Park and a pleasant 2 mile walk to midtown, the local neighborhood is packed with restaurants and upscale shopping with a quieter and more relaxed vibe than in the lower addresses. Check-in was fast and the staff friendly and helpful. They even loaned my grandson a screwdriver and gave him some batteries so he could play with a new toy. Our junior suite was perfect for the three of us with 2 3/4-size beds, a pull-out sofa in the sitting area, and french doors between for privacy. The facility desperately needs updating and a thorough cleaning (although our bathroom was spotless). The furniture, carpets and draperies are worn and heavily stained. The breakfast buffet is downright horrible except for the pastry. Ice cold eggs, rock hard tater tots, and flimsy bacon strips plus cold cereal and yogurt. With 2 boys under 14, I chose not to check out the hotel restaurant and cocktail lounge. At this price point I was rather disappointed and would not stay here again. There are too many other, higher quality options.

Great suite and location, apathetic staff

The staff spent a lot of time talking to each other. They were uninformative and impatient on the phone leading up to the trip. I hate it when you wait for the desk personnel to stop talking to each other and then when they do, just look at you. No coffee or refrigerator in the room. But the suite that we had was great. Front of the building with a view of the park and interior window. French doors, old style small bathroom but great location. Forget the staff. Stay for the location and the room. The housekeeping staff was great, though.

Excelsior Hotel has lost its appeal

I've stayed here about 5 times since 2000, but no more. Despite being a repeat visitor, the check-in staff was unfriendly, unhelpful--no concept of loyalty. The rooms are larger than most NYC, but no longer cost-effective: it's a mid-range hotel charging luxury prices.I've switched to hotels where I earn reward points & am treated better.

I love to find the one of a kind places that is not part of a large franchise to say when I travel. This is an older hotel with a great vibe and feel to it with an incredible location with bus and subway access right by central park and the Museum of Natural Science.
