When looking for a hotel in New York all the midtown ones were so expensive. I looked further afield and found the Excelsior. Located on 81st St it is about half way up Central Park, which is only 1 block east. Also there is a Subway Station 1 block away. Was a bit worried about how long it would take to get to the main tourist areas but this was not a problem. It was about 30 mins to Battery Park at southern tip of Manhattan, 10 mins to Times Square 15 mins to 34th St so no problem. I had 2 rooms and booking this hotel to a midtown one saved me around £800-1000 for 4 nights. Whilst to get to most places you needed to use the subway a 7 day pass cost $33 so mega savings. The rooms were in good condition, a bit small but to be expected in New York. Our toilet got blocked but we were offered another room straight away. Staff very friendly and helpful, could not be faulted. If you are happy to be be a bit away from everywhere this hotel is worth considering

We booked the Excelsior on the appeal of having a suite & thus more room. However the hotel is somewhat dated. While the room was clean it needed an update in terms of furnishing. The bathroom was compact to say the least. While the staff were ok, in comparison to other establishments they seemed rather fed up. Location wise, handy for central park & some nearby shops (e.g. century 21) & some museum's nearby. Other than that subway for access to the other main attractions of NYC. On our stay we were down to one functioning lift & the water for the shower not flowing particularly well. Also be prepared to Q for coffee in the morning, while gratis & situated adjacent to reception it can be a wait. All things considered there are many other comparable hotels that have better facilities & closer to the centre of NYC. All depends on ones budget & choice of what you like. I would not stay here again.

    Super location, classic NYC hotel

Yes, the Excelsior is an older NYC hotel so some rooms are modestly sized and getting the room temperature right can be tricky. However, the location is hard to beat on the Upper West Side. It is right across the street from the Natural History Museum with great subway access. The UWS does not have many hotels so it is great to find one in the neighborhood. The UWS is less zany than downtown or midtown. Our room was very clean. The beds were comfortable. I found the staff, especially the bellmen, to be helpful and engaging. Keep in mind, it is a 3.5 star property -- not the Plaza -- so it isn't lavish, but you get a good night's stay. You can park at the Natural History musuem for $30 per day, just make sure to get your parking ticket validated before leaving.

We recently stayed here and were very happy with the facilities. We had a little sitting room which gave us plenty of space to visit without having to use the bedroom. There were 4 of us and we had been concerned about the space but it was very comfortable. Everyone we encountered was nice and professional. Only concern was coffee was only available at certain times of the day and there was only one Keurig. Loved the location - quiet, close to Central Park and the subway.

Had a great stay and staff was great from check in to checkout. Location was great for short walk to central park. Which was a lifesaver to attend my daughter's wedding in the park. Looking forward to next stay in the city.
