Where do I begin, overall the complex is lovely. There’s plenty of pools and bars. It’s made up of 4 hotels however you have to pay extra for 2 of them which is around $15pp per day!! Initially when we arrived it was quite quiet and relaxed until the Friday when the Mexicans come for a long weekend. They take over all the sunbeds not caring if your stuff is on them, trash the place by leaving food, cups and rubbish everywhere and go around in large groups to intimidate you. 10 adults and 6 children to 4 sunbeds waiting for you to move to sit on your bed and push you out. The rooms are a good size and clean. The Tv is a bit pointless though as there’s next to no English channels so be mindful when trying to entertain children in the room. The food is lovely, the a la cartes are a must. We also treated ourselves to the lobster at $65 and it was well worth it for 2. But food in the main buffet is just as good. There are lots of beautiful wild animals around the complex including lizards, iguanas and raccoons. This makes for lovely balcony views! The Tui reps unfortunately aren’t up to the standards we’ve had previously. Quite often not there at advertised times, unfriendly and not too helpful when you need something sorting. If I’m honest I’m not sure if I would revisit as I fell we could probably get more value for money elsewhere.

First time in Mexico, and the experience was fantastic. Here's my review of this resort; Thumbs up - Great buffet, as they had different buffet themes everyday. Also the service in the buffet was fast and accurate. The bars next to the main pool, near the lobby and the beach were all great! Unlimited drinks was my favourite thing. The waterpark and the main pool were quite clean. Lots of beach chairs available, and the snack bar was quite handy in case you wanted to munch something while at the pool. The carts that took you around the entire resort is an essential service, and they've done a great job in handling the crowd. All activities have been posted in the lobby, I took a picture of it and kept it handy. The check-in was smooth. The room was spacious, location of the room was right next to the kids waterpark and the main pool which made it even better. A/C worked all days. My 2.5 yr old son loved the waterpark. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Premium wifi was $9 USD per device, or else you have to come to the lobby to use free wifi. The entire facility was kept very-very clean and tidy. Requires Improvement - Since I was there for 5 nights, I was offered 2 A la carte dinners (you get 3 dinners if you stay 6-8 nights). The experience in the A la carte dinners was not great, requires massive improvement in all areas. The Mexican Cozumel A/C was not working and the staff did not seem to care. The menu was very limited also, hence you're forced to order from a very limited variety, and the taste was nowhere close to authentic Mexican food. The same goes with the Mediterranean (the A/C was working). Hence these two restaurants are giving a bad name to the ethnic food they're offering. The roof over the sitting area near the lobby needs massive improvement. One rain and half the area is all wet. The waiter service is great, but they must learn some very basic English words used inside a restaurant/kitchen. On Friday, the local Mexican crowd arrived, and that meant big line-ups at the buffet and bars. Hence arrive early for all the three meals. 4 out of 5 is my rating!

The hotel could not be considered 5 star either for service or accommodation Feels more like a large Butlins camp, which is becoming dated Air conditioning in room was not great and even worse when broke down. After requesting an maintenance engineer, none arrived :-( I contacted an maintenance engineer working in our block on the outside door lights, which also weren’t working. He told me that no one had put any jobs through for A/C in our room. He confirmed that the A/c unit was broken and contacted his manager. I was advised the the reception would contact be within 10mins to sort out another room. 20mins later no contact. I phoned reception but no answer so I went to reception. Only to find that they knew nothing about this from maintenance:-( Reception wanted to send a maintenance guy round, even though I’d told them they’d already been. Eventually after 2 & 1/2 hours we were moved to an alternative room. Supervisions was supposed to contact us to advise why communications broke down. Never heard from them. New room A/c worked well but servicing of rooms was hit & miss, often left with no towels. Rang reception to speak with a manager was left holding on phone for 15mins in the end I went to reception. Still waiting for manager to get back to me. Not what I’d call a 5 Stat rating. TUI, our holiday company, were next to useless. Supposed to be 4 reps at our hotel. None turned up for welcome meeting. When we did get to see a rep they were apologetic. After paying TUI $280 for show seats we found that almost no view of most of the show. TUI rep was not available and always disappears we’ll before posted finish times. Eventually offered VIP lounge for flight home, but 3 days later still no lounge tickets. When contacted TUI rep advise the rep who offered the lounge tickets had them and would be off for 2 days. Leaving yet another trip to the TUI office. Feels like I spent most of my holiday going back & forth to TUI office because there was either no rep there or the reps that were simply passed the buck to a rep that was not there. :-( Won’t be using TUI again !

We have just got back from a fantastic 2 week holiday at The Grand Bahia Principe Coba. The resort is absolutely huge with so much to explore, different bars/pools and beaches to go to. The food is good. Particularly the a la carte restaurants. The best ones we went to were: - Tequila (Mexican) - gran Tortuga (Brazilian) - mikado (Japanese) (if you go here make sure you have the tepinyaki) We did some great excursions. The best being Coco Bongos and Coba (Mayan Traditions). You also get free access to Kayaks which is great fun from Coba beach! We recommend going to Tulum pool/Beach rather than staying at Coba everyday. It’s easier to get a bed in the shade there and slightly nicer as well as being a bit quieter. There are some things which wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There is a smell. The pool bar particularly wasn’t very appealing. They are slow to clean the rooms sometimes, bit frustrating when you get back to the room at 4/5 and then they are trying to come in and clean your room. There were a few people that got seriously ill whilst there, luckily we did not. People also mentioned things getting stolen from rooms, so make sure you keep valuables with you at all times, we had no problems with this. For a 5* we would expect a little more. Would like drink service at the pools rather than having to swim/walk to the bar constantly. You can’t get straws anywhere! Which is really annoying, when they put so much ice in your drinks constantly. You are getting sold to quite allot which is frustrating. People trying to sell temp tattoos, tickets for events and massages. Quite annoying when you are sleeping on the sun bed after a few too many tequilas the night before! There is a constant expectation of Tips and the service doesn’t always deserve it. We only tipped when warranted but make sure you bring plenty of cash when you go. Otherwise you will feel awkward if you have nothing to give. Nothing the hotel can do about this but Mosquitos are everywhere! And can ruin your trip. Make sure you buy “Off” spray, orange can from the lobby - $11. Overall, we had the best holiday and didn’t want to come home!

We love this place, it's like going home because we're so familiar with it, weve been there every year for a long time. And the staff is wonderful. But I don't get why management has to make so many changes. We miss the music. There was always nightly music in the lobbies and now we have to look for it. And what is there isn't always that great. we want latin music, we're in Mexico. And the Hacienda band is gone. How depressing. We won't be back this year, going to a different resort. Would be great if we could find the Hacienda band somewhere else! They changed the access to Akumal for other hotel guests at Coba and Tulum but still charge the same if not more for those places. Getting less for more. Seems to be what they are after. Beach access has changed, can no longer use the swing bar. Can't even walk through the Akumal lobby to short cut to the beach. No thanks. We're off to somewhere else. Who knows if we'll be back.
