    The Secrets out, yet again!

With the vast majority of guests at the Capri Riviera seemingly from North America, and a pleasing variation to the norm it has to be said, some thoughts and observations from across the pond. For those who yearn for a cup of Rosie Lee to combat the effect of too many cocktails be aware that there is no kettle in the rooms. However when in Rome, so to speak, the filter coffee supped in the early morning warmth, as the hotel comes alive, makes an admirable substitute. Parity restored when the ingenious waiters in the La Riviera restaurant conjured up a dinky china teapot. Bliss! The room, north side sea view, was spacious and perfectly met our needs, cleaned to a high specification. Humidity, being high, was undoubtedly the reason that a damp or clammy feel became attached to most items something perhaps unavoidable. Unlike our new found friends and being of Anglo Saxon stock we actually on occasions found the air conditioning on the chilly side; and we’re not even part of the snowflake generation! However generally the thumbs up with the added bonus of the balcony. Sitting at dusk watching the cruise ships pass or leave Cozumel, or a pod of pelicans gliding overhead, or a wedding party serenaded by a Mariachi band whilst the palm trees gently swayed was simply magical. Much time was spent on the beach where the oft mentioned seaweed was of little consequence to veterans of the North Sea’s disposal programme! A gentle stroll south provided a form of exercise, much needed as the fortnight advanced, with the chance to espy on the neighbouring properties and apply the inevitable comparisons! There’s little in the way of hazards to deter the enjoyment although fifty minutes in the searing heat was plentiful! The opposite direction is equally worthy of investigation and the organised early morning promenade, not too energetic, to the lagoon is recommended. Just one more action to note, the drinks to sunbed service is second to none, no likelihood of going thirsty! When it comes to eating decision making was based on a desire to be lazy i.e. being waited on. Breakfast was taken in the buffet from time to time when a more staid start to the day was preferred, the gluten free bread was a bit sad, but more often the Seaside Grill was chosen to try something a touch more exhilarating and novel and the food certainly stepped up to the mark. Lunches were shared between the three outside eateries to satisfy a preference for fish – ceviche truly outstanding - and dining in the open air and no complaints on that front with plenty of opportunities to trial something new. The odd trip to the La Riviera in the evening was disappointing with the surprise of lids being lifted to reveal, well nothing! Not to worry the menus elsewhere satisfied a need with the Oceana and the Seaside Grill winning our favour, no disrespect to the Asian (Himitsu) and the Italian (Portofino), by providing scrumptious platefuls. Who would not salivate over a meal of calamari, lobster bisque and sea bass?! Thus, I would suggest, enough variation to satisfy all palates. The entertainment surprised being above standard compared to many other places. Music could be heard throughout the day – drumming in the midday sun for nearly ninety minutes, really? - and long into the evening from umpteen venues whilst the shows easily stood up to a repeat viewing in the second week. The enthusiastic young support team worked tirelessly to encourage dissidents to participate in the daily activities! Comments about the state of the hotel I believe to have been exaggerated. The style with both a water feature and greenery of some proportion inside the building softens the interior preventing a hard, uniform, predictable feel that many hotels have. Sure after fifteen years, if that’s correct, it shows signs of tiredness around the edges but then I looked in a mirror and my understanding was complete! Like, I imagine, many of the hotels on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsular this one is miles from a residential area so it’s hard to pick up a flavour of the country. That’s why if visitors have the chance I recommend they visit one or more of the places dedicated to showcasing Mayan culture and history, a very worthwhile experience and with fairly lengthy journeys involved just a hint of Mexican life away from the tourist zone. A synopsis of two satisfying and pleasurable weeks at the Capri Riviera wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the staff. Whether Secrets put something in their tea, sorry coffee, to ensure they are happy and smiley all day is unknown! As a guest it is irrelevant but the attitude and aptitude displayed by one and all adds a dimension that will ensure the return of many. The management should be grateful they have such a fortunate asset and do all that is necessary to keep it that way. In summary only a few niggles but nothing to deny a five star rating. If minor complaints were taken into account there would never be a ‘five’ and that would be unfair on a first-class hotel that deserves to succeed.

in part. While our room and bathroom one restaurant and the pool were fully accessible, there was no wheelchair access to the beach. Service was superb. The food was very tasty and since 2 more restaurants were not accessible with a wheelchair, the riviera buffet staff secured menus to them and brought over the food for us, so we could have the culinary experience of the other restaurants too. "all inclusive" was worth it!

I had no idea what a week in a resort like this would be. I was amazed by the entire experience. The service was impeccable. The food was incredible. We tried all of the restaurants, and weren’t disappointed by anything. And the swim-up bar? Fantastic!

    Best resort yet!!!
