It only has a beach that is a few hundred meters long that is practically washed out. I will include pictures if required. As a result, there are no beach or water sports. The Atlantic Ocean has large waves that make swimming in the area dangerous and I believe unsafe. The one pool at this hotel is small and although I attended in the low season it was busy and would not be large enough to accommodate many visitors. Given the beach is limited in size and washed out and the pool is very small there is limited ability to remain active. The property is on a cliff and has no surrounding grounds for walking. This resort is a smoker’s resort. As a physician, I found this to be difficult to endure. Most people smoke in all areas of the resort except the restaurants. Most people smoke on their verandas. Given the small size of the resort there is no way to escape secondhand exposures. I could not sit on my veranda nor leave my window open as smoke would enter my room. This severely limits the holiday. The website advertises that this is a luxury site and there is butler service. This service was not dependable nor reliant. They initially provided a website on which you could order a meal for the room. I phoned after the breakfast was a half hour late to hear they did not review their own site nor my order. I then ordered in person for the second day and I had to phone again for breakfast after a half hour delay. I subsequently ordered a lunch to have someone confirm if I wanted it an hour later to be told my lunch was delivered to another room. I cancelled the lunch after waiting for an hour and a half. The bar service was slow and despite not being busy staff did not circulate. They did not have advertised drinks such as Jameson Whiskey on several occasions. They advertised “Unlimited à la carte dinners in restaurants per week of stay (reservation and formal dress required, long pants and shirt for men)”. Due to the limited number of people at the resort many nights they only offered buffet dinners and not a la carte options. They closed the a la carte restaurants at least three of three nights that I attended. They advertised that they provide once a day ironing service. When I asked, they pointed me to the iron and board in my room.

Wonderful beach, friendly staff and tremendous location. Sandy beach made it easy to walk right into the awaiting ocean! Not too far from the Samana international airport. Premium beverages a pleasant surprise.

    Gorgeous place, not good service

Stayed here a few days during our honeymoon. The island & property are beautiful. The rooms are nice. I like that you can order different pillows! The service was kind of awful though. Multiple employees were rude. When you pay for a luxury hotel, you expect the employees to be kind & helpful. Was not the case for half of the staff we encountered unfortunately. The worst experience was a man named Gregory who was taking reservations. I went on our first day to make reservations for the restaurants. He for some reason assumed I had been staying there awhile & was misunderstanding me. He very rudely kept asking me the same 2 questions over & over until he realized it’s my first night. He did actually apologize for being rude. But then I asked about setting up a tour. He promised if I came back the next day, he would get me on the tour. When we went back, no one knew what he was talking about & we almost missed the chance to take the tour we wanted because of him. We ended up going to the docks & finding a guide to take us after the hotel told us no tours there were available for us on our stay. That tour was half the reason we chose to stay in Samana. While most of the staff was fine, no one stood out as great & we did have a few other incidents of rudeness, like the 2 women in the gift shop who were chatting the entire time I shopped & checked out & didn’t say even a hello or thank you. They also charged my husband 3x as much for laundry as they should have. He chose wash only but they insisted he didn’t fill out a form so they automatically do ironing, etc. He really didn’t need his boxers ironed... he filled out wash only on the bag, but of course they don’t keep those. Refused to fix it. We stayed at TRS in Punta Cana before staying here & their customer service was phenomenal. In fact we had great service everywhere else we went in DR. Unless you’re set on staying on the island, I’d spend my money somewhere else. Beautiful island, need to replace half the staff. Will not be back.

    No complaints!

I totally enjoyed my 7 day stay at Bahia Principe Samana. While it is a 3hr ride from the Santo Domingo airport, I think that makes it more beautiful and exclusive. Dinner was good everynight, except for the Italian restaurant nite, Brazilian was my fave. Breakfast buffet was also always good, visited made your way omelet station everyday. The grilled pineapple was awesome, ripe plantain are my fave, we cook them the same way in Barbados. The Banana Mama is a delightful frozen drink. The staff was always pleasant, from Jose, Jefry, Franklin, David, and more. I hear Mercedes' massages are something to write home about, but I didnt have time to get one. FYI I think your room refrigerator might also be controlled by your key card being left in the room in a slot that also activates the AC and the lights, SO if you have a medication or anything that must be kept chilled then leave 1 key in the slot at all times, we found that our refrigerator lost power at least once. My friends & I participated in the outdoor tai chi yoga that was awesome, I missed the paddle board work out though, wish I could recall the instructor's name, he also does cross fit and looks like it ;-). The shows in the evening were good too, karaoke Fri nite. I brushed my teeth using tap water, washed my face in the shower, and drank the bottled & restaurant water, No GI upset, I did take a chewable Pepto nightly as a precaution. Playa Rincón is about a 30min ride away but beautiful & we enjoyed an inexpensive lunch at the 1 restaurant there, only 13 ppl on the whole beach when we went, beach chairs under trees, we brought our own towels. The shower door is only half the length of the tub if u can picture that, we put a towel at the bottom of the door to prevent "flooding" while showering. Also dont skip finger day at the gym if u want the shower to work, you have to pull up the thing on top of the faucet in order to make the water to go up to the shower head it wasnt easy initially. PS I always felt safe there!! #IsurvivedtheDR
