Once a quiet surf spot, the beach town of Sayulita, 40 km north of Puerto Vallarta, is an ideal spot for a daytrip with the family. Aside from the town's laid-back feeling, funky shops and fresh mahi-mahi fish tacos, it's the beach that wins the most rave reviews. Its consistent waves have made it a beloved destination for surfers of all skill levels, including beginners.
There are many surf huts lining the beach selling lessons or renting boards by the hour. Expect to pay about US$50-$80 for a private lesson (less for a group lesson) that includes 30 minutes of beach instruction, 90 minutes of wave instruction and an hour of practice afterwards. To take these lessons, it's recommended that children be at least 10 years old and strong swimmers.
Arrive early in Sayulita to stake out the best beach chairs, which are owned by restaurants situated further back from the water's edge. Use of the chairs and umbrellas is free so long as you order food or drinks.
Public buses run regularly between Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita. The ride takes about an hour.
