Tired & Needs Improvement
CB_Napa_Valley (Napa Valley, California) on Mar 20, 2024
Food was beyond disappointing in both flavor and serving temperature and we tried all options for meals. While clean it could have been better and it just seemed tired with multiple minor things in need of repair.
A Fun Stay, But Lots of Improvements Needed

I stayed at this resort for four nights with my 8 year old daughter. We had fun at the resort, and I definitely don't regret going, but we also ran into quite a few issues. Overall I would recommend looking elsewhere as I have had better experiences elsewhere in Cozumel and the Riveria Maya at similar prices. Pros: We enjoyed the pool and the small waterslide it included. The beach was nice and you could do some decent snorkeling right off the resort. The resort is very easy to get around as it is quite small. Explorer's club (kid's club) was very good, so much so my daughter wanted to stay longer when I went to pick her up. Drinks were readily available. Rooms were a bit dated in some respects but overall were fairly reasonable. Cons: This is a small resort so your options are quite limited (1 pool, two restaurants, etc). Our room was located right beside the lobby bathrooms and pool area and was high traffic and noisy. Service was really hit and miss. There were a few staff who were genuinely helpful and friendly but many were just barely engaged in their work and in some cases nothing happened when we reported problems (such as a smoke detector that was beeping constantly for more than two days). Service was also slow in restaurants and at the bars. Sometimes it did feel like they were understaffed but other times it just felt like we were being ignored. Housekeeping was hit and miss. Room wasn't entirely clean on arrival and sink and shower were not draining properly. We never received a full complement of towels the entire time we were there (luckily they always kept the pool towels fully stocked so we could just grab one of those). We experienced more incorrect orders for food and drinks here than I've experienced at any other resort in Mexico. The 24 hour cafe has an extremely limited selection of food and never had any fruits, vegetables, or healthier options. There are no dinner buffets at this resort, everything is a la carte. One could view that as an advantage but if you are traveling with kids make sure you plan ahead as there are also no reservations so you just have to hope you can get in for food reasonably quickly when you want to do so. Entertainment was less impressive than what I've seen at other resorts. This is not a knock on the entertainment team, who were definitely hard working, it just seemed like they weren't investing into this area. One night there wasn't any sort of show and while there was a theatre off the lobby it was never opened and they instead used the lobby stairs and a small stage off the pool instead. Food was highly variable. We had a few good dishes but had many more mediocre or even bad dishes. Food at the El Patio Mexican restaurant was particularly disappointing - except the soup, which we can recommend. We talked to guests staying at the sister Dreams and Secrets resorts who were also very disappointed in the food.
The best beach yet.

We have now been to four different all-inclusive resorts in the area, two on the mainland (Playa & Puerto Morelos), and two on Cozumel (Sunscape and Fiesta Americana). The beach at Sunscape (and the neighboring Hyatt properties), is the best by far in our opinion. As others have said, the snorkeling on site is great, it's rather shallow quite a ways out, and the water is clear and beautiful. Contrary to what others have said, we did not think water shoes were a must. We brought some but did not use them much, You can rather easily see the sandy bottom pathways / entry points to avoid the coral, which is rather spread out and easily avoidable. There are many large open spots clear of rocks or coral to just hang out in once in the water. We also brought our own snorkel equipment, but they also have some - for us it was nice for convenience. The bar at the beach is lovely, and just about a perfect setting. All the staff were friendly, attentive, accommodating, kind, and hard working - across the board. The reviews saying the resort is aging a bit are accurate, and the food was below average (including the Market Cafe next door), but the positives far outweighed the negatives in our opinion, especially for the price. There were seven in our party, from age 18 on up, and we had a blast.

Buffet food for breakfast and lunch was terrible. Hot items on buffet were mostly cold and food had very little flavor. Room was in bad condition with many broken items. If your looking for a cheap vacation and have low standards this is your place.

Very Mexican resort …nice, and quiet as far as loud noise goes.Lively bar with hardworking bartenders. The food service is good with compliments to Miquel, Antonio, and Eugenia! The rooms have been updated and the beds are comfortable. Water shoes are a necessity and entering the water is challenging as well as being very shallow. Cozumel is a great place for divers!
