I couldn't have enjoyed my first solo travel to Costa Rica without the beautiful people at the Planet Hollywood Resort. From the moment you arrive to the resort you are treated like a vip guest. I started my trip with a bootcamp with Geranamo at the resort gym, he is full of energy and never lets you forget he's Dominican lol. Raquel was so friendly and made the entertainment at the pool special. Hugo made the most refreshing strawberry margaritas I've ever had. I literally drank them every day while laying out at the pool. Juan Jose and Sergio gave amazing service and made delicious specialty cocktails during the evening on the 2nd floor. I ended up riding the transportation cart with Jeffrey quite often during my stay and he was such a sweetheart. The entire stay remembers you by name and genuinely asks about your day. The rooms are gorgeous and the staff does a great job of keeping the rooms and entire resort clean. Besides the buffet (because who doesnt love buffets), Gusto is hands down the best restaurant on the resort. I will also say that the agents at PH Experience set me up with safe excursions. I took a water taxi to Coco Beach ($35 roundtrip) for local shopping and eats and I also did the zip lining excursion at Papagayo ($65) amazing price points. All in all, I'd definitely stay at this resort again.

Sunwing Vacations did a great job flying us down to Liberia despite the 737 Max 8 out of service. If you need cell phone service on your trip, its as simple as strolling over to the Kolbi (biggest cellphone service in CR) booth in the terminal - USD10 for 2 GB of data good for 30 days. Make sure you look for the Planet Hollywood representatives for your hotel transfer as there are numerous timeshare people roaming about trying to sign you up for presentations although if you don't mind taking an excursion to see other properties (and can say NO thank you politely) it can be a pleasant excursion with some freebies. The Planet Hollywood property is stunningly set on a bay with the resort on a hillside. The pool is nice - bars at either end. Activities in the pool - water polo, water exercises etc. take place all day. There are lots of lounge chairs, cabanas for rental and lots of wait staff to bring food and drinks. The private beach is about 50 metres from the pool - very nice with black sand (from the region's volcanoes). Three dining establishments are found right beside the pool. ***Guy's! Burger Joint - Guy Fieri - need I say more? Delicious burgers (beef and chicken) and fries. Tied for our favourite spot. Gusto Italian Trattoria - Hit and miss. ***Blue Star Tex-Mex Cantina - Tied for our favourite spot. Lunch buffet has lots of choices and the dinner a la carte was very good. The excellent exercise facililty and spa is also beside the pool. The gym is well equipped and the spa is very nice - the massage was relaxing but they are not RMTs. Theoretically, you could stay at the pool the whole day and into the evening without venturing farther. Venturing up to the top of the resort (by golf cart or a short walk but uphill) to the main building is where the outdoor theatre is located (great evening entertainment - music, dancing and themed eating events) and other dining establishments - So Cal Gourmet Food Emporium - the only breakfast restaurant - buffet style. Breakfast selection is wide and, since its an all-inclusive resort - there is a self serve Mimosa station! The fruit in Costa Rica is exceptional - papaya, pineapple and oranges (unknown species) are amazing. East Sushi & Teppanyaki Bar - sashimi is tough. Nice try to hit asian flavours but a miss. Sunset Strip Steakhouse & Grill - Hit and miss. The steak looks, smells and tastes great BUT the meat is bit tough. Overtime Bar & Grill - Too dark, but people we met loved it (the only place for wings on the resort) ***Fuel Coffee Bar - A big hit! Opened at 7 am daily for cappucinos etc., gelato, pastries and small sandwiches. A very close second only due to limited selection. It's only been open since October 2018 so there are still some kinks to work out. The staff at this resort were extremely helpful and friendly - no pressure to buy upgrades or presentations. This resort is remote - other resorts are in the area but to get to the closest tourist area (Coco Beach) is 20 minutes by boat (from the resort) or 40 minutes by shuttle bus. There is no taxi stand so you need to book privately (meet outside security gate) or arrange through the resort. Plan to eat on the resort as there are really no options within a 20-30 drive from the resort. The excursions are great - volcanoes, small tourist towns, coffee plantations, wild animals, horseback riding, ziplining etc. A word of caution - bring a hat and sunscreen. We did not need bug repellant for some reason but pack it just in case. A bigger word of caution - North American safety standards are unknown so don't assume hiking and boating will have guard rails etc. You will need proper footware and exercise are when hiking etc. That said the excursions are a lot of fun.If you fly Sunwing from Canada, ask on the plane about purchasing excursions - you'll save the exchange rate as you pay the excursion price but in CAD rather than USD. You don't book a day until you meet with the travel rep at the resort. Conclusion: If you want a relaxing family vacation or are a couple who don't mind children running about then Planet Hollywood has something for everyone. Most people raved about the food and perhaps my review is a bit picky because we tend to be pickier than most so as All Inclusives go this resort hits most of the ticky boxes for people who want a flavour of Costa Rica in North American comfort. Would we go back to Costa Rica - YES. The people are friendly, everywhere we went we felt safe and unlike other developing countries we did not see any police or military except at the airport. Perhaps its different farther south in San Jose but up in Guanacaste ... nada.

First time in Costa Rica, traveled with two girl friends. Flew into Liberia Airport (35 minutes from the resort) around 10 pm, our shuttle was waiting for us when we landed; we felt safe at all times. All the restaurants were closed by the time we arrived; luckily there is 24-hour room service. We had a minor issue with our room the first night; the lights kept going on and off periodically. We called the front desk to ask if we could change rooms and was told it would be better to change the next day because people will be checking out. It was late; we were exhausted and ready for bed, so we did not mind. However, the next day when we went to the front desk asking about the room change, they were not accommodating AT ALL. He gave us a hard time, asking if we had called maintenance first regarding the lights, which we did not because we were told we could switch rooms. He finally agreed to switch us to a new room, told us to just pack our stuff and someone will come and collect our belongings and move it to the new room. So we packed our things and headed up to the brunch buffet, which was the best part of our trip. After we headed down to check out the black sand beach, didn’t go in the water. Lounged around pool area; plenty of open beach chairs and umbrellas. Make sure you watch your belongings from the cute monkeys; they will rummage through your bags for food. After about 5 hours, we headed back to the front desk to ask about our room, which they had not paid any attention to, we had to wait for them to actually assign us to a new room. So we head over to the new room, no sign of our luggage, so we waited over an hour, then called and they said they would be bringing it. After about ANOTHER 45 minutes, still no sign of our stuff. We were pretty upset, to say the least since we were just waiting around in our wet bathing suits. One of our friends just went by herself to our old room to see if our luggage has even been picked up, which of course it was not. So she had to flag someone down to open up the door and bring our luggage over herself. Aside from this mishap, the rest of the trip was great. Rooms were very nice and spacious, and clean: no bugs. We booked an excursion to Sensoria through their third-party vendors; it was cheaper than booking directly from the hotel. THE RUNDOWN: We almost opted in for the STAR class, as previous reviews had stated, it seemed like a hassle if you were not. We came here on a weekday (Monday-Thursday), so the resort was pretty empty. No problems getting towels at the pool and we were able to dine at every restaurant without making reservations. PLACES WE TRIED: FOOD: +So Cal Gourmet Food Emporium. GREAT selection of fresh fruits and juices, omelet bar, etc. AMAZING! +EAST SUSHI BAR & Teppanyaki Bar- benihana style dining, food was delicious. +Gusto Italian Trattoria: Appetizers were disappointing, but entrees were DELICIOUS! +FUEL Coffee Co: mini Hors d'oeuvres, Ice cream, coffee, etc. SADLY they were out of Matcha tea the whole week. +Room Service: Selection was limited but decent meal. DRINKS: +Premiere Bar next to the main lobby serves the BEST drinks!! +MAKE SURE YOU TRY THEIR FRESH COCONUT WATER! Served in a cute little coconut! Did not see it on any menus but saw someone else’s review. ACTIVITIES: + Plenty of fitness classes offered throughout the day. + Night 1: Sit down dinner & movie showing Rocky 1 accompanied with a dinner buffet. +Night 2: Live "Queen" themed musical performance, no food just specialty themed cocktails. PROS: Rooms/beds were comfortable and clean. Food was delicious. Shuttles to help you up to your room, when available. CONS: Limited on-site activities, resort is pretty dead after 10 pm, "Plugged in" App was not available at the time of our stay. VERY hilly, be prepared to hike, sometimes the shuttle takes forever to come. Special Shoutout to ALEXANDER from the front desk for making our trip so memorable!! He checked us in when we first arrived, very professional and extremely accommodating. Probably the only helpful and funny staff we encountered, so whenever we had any issues or questions, we would always go to him. He just really emphasized the true meaning of ¡Pura Vida! in Costa Rica. Thankful for his help!

We got here yesterday and are having a fantastic time. I like to eat healthily and workout on vacation. The fitness classes led by Geronimo, Jorge, and Eric were amazing. There are a wide variety of vegetarian and healthy options available at the buffets.
