The Playa del Carmen lost it's charm with the Hilton changes.

The stay at the Playa del Carmen has changed quite a bit since Hilton took over. We have been RealClub members for 10 years. Being a club member got very good rates, dinner at the finest restaurant and many other small gestures of appreciation for being long time returning costumers. The club membership has a very high price tag so club members paid for the extras. When the Hilton took over, they eliminated RealClub from the premises all together. The only thing the Hilton honors is the discount on reservations. A person can reserve a room for the same price or lower on Expedia or use their Hilton points from a credit card. The high plush mattresses were changed to very stiff and uncomfortable mattresses that make it very difficult to sleep. The days of having your bed turned down and towels left on the pillow that were folded in the shapes of animals with a couple chocolates next to them are gone. The lounge chairs that surrounded the pool for any guest to use have been replaced with what they call cabana's that cost $130+ a day to use. The cabana does come with a special lunch offer to be served at your cabana for $170/day. . It's an all inclusive hotel. Lunch is already included. When the younger hotel employees finish their shift for the day, they take unused cabana's and bring plates of the special lunch with them along with as many drinks as they can handle. Once they have drank enough alcohol they push their way into groups of guests to join the party they were not invited to. I saw this turn into drunk guests arguing with drunk employees to go somewhere else. When employees that were on the clock were asked to intervene the only thing that was done was the off the clock employees were asked to move. The pool went from being open until 10 pm to closing the pool, pool side restaurant and bars promptly at 6pm. By promptly I mean Hilton employees come out to the pool and ask guests to leave. Not just the pool. Guests are also asked to leave the beach outside the pool area. It's a public beach. The Hilton does not have the authority to force them off the beach so the Hilton forces them off any lounge chairs that belong to the Hilton. There are 50 or more chairs out there. 2 people were on the beach. 48 lounge chairs were empty but the 2 people were told they could not use the lounge chairs after 6pm. I was there and saw this first hand. The Playa Del Carmen has been stripped of all it's traditional charm and hospitality and is now just another hotel. We were booked for 8 days and 7 nights. After 3 days of disappointment we moved to a different all inclusive that is everything the Playa used to be and more. After 10 years of staying at the Playa, we will not return there. If you want a pleasant experience at an all inclusive hotel there are much better places available. For a first time visitor you might find it acceptable. For a returning guest that knows what it used to be you will not find it acceptable at all.

Spent a week at the Hilton in March. The weather was perfect. The property is stunning. A big shout out for the amazing service at Spice! Daniel Iuit was so friendly. He took great care of us all week long. This guy went above and beyond. Exceptional service Daniel.
