Wonderful beach, friendly staff and tremendous location. Sandy beach made it easy to walk right into the awaiting ocean! Not too far from the Samana international airport. Premium beverages a pleasant surprise.

    Gorgeous place, not good service

Stayed here a few days during our honeymoon. The island & property are beautiful. The rooms are nice. I like that you can order different pillows! The service was kind of awful though. Multiple employees were rude. When you pay for a luxury hotel, you expect the employees to be kind & helpful. Was not the case for half of the staff we encountered unfortunately. The worst experience was a man named Gregory who was taking reservations. I went on our first day to make reservations for the restaurants. He for some reason assumed I had been staying there awhile & was misunderstanding me. He very rudely kept asking me the same 2 questions over & over until he realized it’s my first night. He did actually apologize for being rude. But then I asked about setting up a tour. He promised if I came back the next day, he would get me on the tour. When we went back, no one knew what he was talking about & we almost missed the chance to take the tour we wanted because of him. We ended up going to the docks & finding a guide to take us after the hotel told us no tours there were available for us on our stay. That tour was half the reason we chose to stay in Samana. While most of the staff was fine, no one stood out as great & we did have a few other incidents of rudeness, like the 2 women in the gift shop who were chatting the entire time I shopped & checked out & didn’t say even a hello or thank you. They also charged my husband 3x as much for laundry as they should have. He chose wash only but they insisted he didn’t fill out a form so they automatically do ironing, etc. He really didn’t need his boxers ironed... he filled out wash only on the bag, but of course they don’t keep those. Refused to fix it. We stayed at TRS in Punta Cana before staying here & their customer service was phenomenal. In fact we had great service everywhere else we went in DR. Unless you’re set on staying on the island, I’d spend my money somewhere else. Beautiful island, need to replace half the staff. Will not be back.

    No complaints!

I totally enjoyed my 7 day stay at Bahia Principe Samana. While it is a 3hr ride from the Santo Domingo airport, I think that makes it more beautiful and exclusive. Dinner was good everynight, except for the Italian restaurant nite, Brazilian was my fave. Breakfast buffet was also always good, visited made your way omelet station everyday. The grilled pineapple was awesome, ripe plantain are my fave, we cook them the same way in Barbados. The Banana Mama is a delightful frozen drink. The staff was always pleasant, from Jose, Jefry, Franklin, David, and more. I hear Mercedes' massages are something to write home about, but I didnt have time to get one. FYI I think your room refrigerator might also be controlled by your key card being left in the room in a slot that also activates the AC and the lights, SO if you have a medication or anything that must be kept chilled then leave 1 key in the slot at all times, we found that our refrigerator lost power at least once. My friends & I participated in the outdoor tai chi yoga that was awesome, I missed the paddle board work out though, wish I could recall the instructor's name, he also does cross fit and looks like it ;-). The shows in the evening were good too, karaoke Fri nite. I brushed my teeth using tap water, washed my face in the shower, and drank the bottled & restaurant water, No GI upset, I did take a chewable Pepto nightly as a precaution. Playa Rincón is about a 30min ride away but beautiful & we enjoyed an inexpensive lunch at the 1 restaurant there, only 13 ppl on the whole beach when we went, beach chairs under trees, we brought our own towels. The shower door is only half the length of the tub if u can picture that, we put a towel at the bottom of the door to prevent "flooding" while showering. Also dont skip finger day at the gym if u want the shower to work, you have to pull up the thing on top of the faucet in order to make the water to go up to the shower head it wasnt easy initially. PS I always felt safe there!! #IsurvivedtheDR

Summary: Pros: Small boutique hotel with good service and variety of wellness activities. Cons: Beware of buffet food, had food poisoning which tainted our vacation (hence 3/5 rating). Details: We stayed there at the end of August for one full week. We chose this hotel because of its small size and the fitness programs they offered. In general we enjoyed our stay. The hotel's occupancy was apparently at 40%. The benefits were that there were plenty of unoccupied beach and pool chairs. You often had the pool to yourself which we enjoyed. However their activity programs and restaurants were also understandably operating with reduced offerings. The beach itself is pretty and essentially private but rather small (not suitable for long walks along the beach). The team responsible for the fitness activities were very friendly and passionate. We enjoyed all their activities (yoga, paddle board yoga, paddle board aquafit, tai chi, functional training, GAP, martial fit, ...). The people who stood out from the team were Freddy and Nerfri. Their fitness facilities even had a punching bag, kettlebells, and pairs of fitness equipment (ellipticals, treadmills, bikes,...) to allow working out with your significant other. Ramon who worked at the pool bar and José who worked at the restaurants stood out. Their attitude, friendliness, and attentiveness were remarkable. My wife and I are vegetarians so the food selection at times was limited especially when it comes to getting some protein rich foods. However, the staff were usually accommodating about it. I did get food poisoning (in the middle of our vacation) after one of the buffet dinners. It was rather unpleasant and I had to spend a day confined to our room. The vacation wasn't the same afterwards but we tried to make the most out of it. The staff was shocked about the food poisoning incident but accommodated our requests for rather simple food to help with the recovery. Overall it took about two weeks to fully recover from it. A lot of the staff who were aware of it did ask about my well being several times which was nice and thoughtful. Anyway, the hotel and staff generally deserve their 5-star rating. The food poisoning was an unfortunate event and didn't allow us to take full advantage of our vacation. Overall it was a positive experience at Luxury Bahia Principe Samana, but the food poisoning and lengthy recovery only allow us to give it a 3/5 rating.

    A lovely resort

Of the several resorts my husband and I have visited, this is one of our favourites. Pros: - small size, not too many people, peaceful - great food, and staff were very accommodating to my dietary restrictions - kind, thoughtful and helpful staff - gorgeous room, clean and bright - clean beach in a small bay, with calm waters for easy swimming We made a special request upon booking to have a room on a higher floor, and in a specific wing, and the staff so kindly accommodated both requests. The room was lovely, but the view was what really blew us away. We slept with the balcony door open so we could fall asleep to the sound of the waves. We chose this resort in part because it was on the smaller side, which we find more pleasant. Sometimes a smaller resort means fewer food options, but that was not the case here. There were lots of options at the buffet (such as fresh avocado slices every day!) and the staff were so kind and helpful in accommodating my dietary restrictions. David at the front desk even created a printed document in Spanish for me to take to the restaurants, explaining what I could not eat. In ten days, I was never bored with the food, and I was so touched by how accommodating all the staff were. One note that all the room balconies face onto the water, and the open hallway faces onto the road. The noise was noticeable from the road, however, they have cleverly installed a second door after the little entranceway into in the room, and it muffles the sound considerably. It didn't end up bothering us in terms of sleep at all. There is only one real con, but it did unfortunately affect our stay, and I hope it's something the management will consider addressing. Because the beach is on the smaller side, it made the presence of other guests smoking a real difficulty for us. We learned pretty quickly that it was best to get down to the beach earlier in the day, as people would go down early and save seats and the beach would get full. The trouble was no matter how early or late we went, where we sat on the beach, or how cleverly we thought we had positioned ourselves, inevitably a smoker or smokers would appear nearby, and start smoking away. Several times during our stay, we ended up just leaving the beach, as there was no reprieve. As a suggestion to management, I think it would be easy to create a smoking and non-smoking area of the beach, so that both groups can enjoy themselves. Although we loved this resort overall, we would probably return to the Bahia in La Romana before Samana, as the beach was a little larger, and as a result, we were able to arrange to be away from smoke more easily. However, if a designated smoking area was created, we would absolutely return here.
