We were very happy with our stay at Hotel Punta Leona. The hotel staff were very friendly and attentive . Nice, clean rooms. The food was really good. This is a huge resort with many different areas. The grounds and facilities are well kept. Tremendous beach to relax and enjoy the water. Beautiful site full of different species of animals , the beaches are amazing and the pool as well . I can recommend this place.

I would have rated this as three stars, but give it the fourth because of the superb location and the fact that they go to great efforts to encourage wildlife. The bedroom we had was rather dated and in need of modernisation, though the swimming pool and outside bar area was attractive. The hotel is located at the end of a private track several kilometres long through forest, and access is contolled, so that only hotel guests and residents of the other properties on the site can get to the beach, the Playa Blanca. The hotel runs a shuttle bus to the beach, but we found it easy to walk to, except at high tide, by following the edge of the nearest beach and climbing over a low promontory. The downside of this seclusion is that, unless you have transport, you will have to use the restaurant or snack bar onsite. We only ate in the restaurant, and were not impressed by the quality of the food. Environmental conservation is one of the reasons for the existence of the hotel, and they have made a significant contribution to the re-establishment of scarlet Macaws in the region, by building nesting boxes for them. They also have an enclosure in which butterflies breed. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel, especially swimming in the warm Pacific, lazing on the beautiful beach and seeing the tropical birds, animals and butterflies.

This place isn’t at all what the website makes it look like. It’s dirty and gross. Great for drunk kids on spring break or something. Beach is nasty. Food is horrid. Rooms are tiny and loud and smelly and unclean.

We stayed with another couple at Selvamar. The room is small and feels a little old, but it's clean and the air conditioner works well. We did not have a car, so spent our days walking to the beach, taking advantage of the free shuttle to Playa Blanca and arranging a guided tour to Carera NP. This is a resort that locals frequent, but everyone speaks English if necessary. A car is needed if you want to go anywhere on the coast, but we were content just staying on the grounds. Loved the food at both the restaurant at Selvamar and the one near Playa Mantas.

My wife and I visited Hotel Punta Leona for our Costa Rica trip and had the most amazing time. First I do have to say that the Selvamar rooms didn't work for us because they are small and in need of renovation which accounts for the 4 star rating instead of 5. We booked a superior room, but were put in a standard room. They did move us to the superior room, but the only thing that made it a superior room was the raised wooden balcony. We talked to other people that told us the rooms were OK for them. Maybe it was because we were staying longer, but we found the rooms to be too small. We want to say a huge thank you to Kristal Campos in reception who took great care of us and resolved the issue we had with the room. As for the rest of the property.......all I can say is OUTSTANDING!!!!!!! There is so much to see on the grounds of Punta Leona and all you have to do is look and pay attention. Almost everywhere we went, we saw iguanas and even caught an iguana fight a couple times. Waking up in the morning to the sound of all the birds and especially the Scarlet Macaws, was really something special. There is a tree that we had never seen before that caught our attention. We did the morning bird watching tour and the night tour twice and that was mainly because of the guide named Alex who is incredibly knowledgeable and it was clear to see that he knows animals and loves his job. He is also an extremely nice and very funny guy. We learned so much from him on the tours.Thank you again Alex, it was great. We read reviews before we went and saw where people said everything was so far to walk to. No offense to anyone, but we have to disagree with that 100%. Everything is easily accessible and not far at all to walk to, just a matter of a few minutes. Plus we found that walking around, looking at the animals and nature was a lot of fun and for us very relaxing. Playa Montes beach was really nice and we spent several evenings sitting there enjoying the sunset and atmosphere. Then we took the shuttle to Play Blanca beach and it is absolutely beautiful, we loved it. The ONLY bad part about it is that you have to take the shuttle to get there and the last one goes back at 5PM. Other than that, it was absolutely perfect. The food was excellent as well and the staff in the restaurants were simply incredible. The first restaurant we went to on our first night was on the beach, if I remember the name correctly it was called Leon Morena. Ruth was the waitress that took care of us, and from then on, every time we went in there she was working, plus she remembered us and greeted us with a smile. Thank you Ruth, we greatly appreciate your kindness. The breakfast restaurant called Carabellas was so much fun. How can you beat having breakfast and watching the monkeys play in the trees across from you and a Coati walking around trying to find a little something to eat? Patricia the waitress there, was just like Ruth. She remembered us and always came to ask us if we wanted something else. When we told her we were leaving the next day, she gave us both a big hug, big smile, and wished us well. With the exception of the room issue, we found Hotel Punta Leona to be an amazing place for a vacation. We also determined that this trip was without a doubt the best vacation we've ever taken. My wife and I both very highly recommend Hotel Punta Leona if you are going to Costa Rica and will be in the area. The Costa Rican people are exceptionally friendly, there is so much to see with nature and animals, the food is good, the weather is good, and almost everything is within a few minutes walk on the property. It is a bit of a drive from the main gate to reception, but once you get there, it is so well worth it.
