Oh Casa Conde...I wanted to like you so much.... The hotel is decent, but it has a lot of things that can be improved. CHECK IN I wish the hotel staff at the front desk would realize that first impressions count a lot, and set the tone for the entire stay. Casa Conde should only allow the most experienced and friendly staff to be at the front desk - which is the opposite of what they are doing. Our flights for both arrival AND departure were early in the morning, in fact at almost the exact same time. We have travelled extensively and are aware that when you arrive early, before the official check-in hour of each particular hotel or resort, the room might not be ready. But what we were not prepared for, was the hassle, greed and attitude that would await us at Casa Conde check-in. Our private airport transportation driver who picked us up from the airport was very nice and kind, and we talked to him lots as he drove us from the airport to the hotel. When we arrived at Casa Conde at the security boom barrier, the security guard took the driver’s information and we expected the barrier to open, and for us to begin our wonderful vacation - well, we were wrong. We knew something was off when the security guard kept talking on the phone and arguing (with the front desk evidently). We asked our driver what was wrong and he said we were too early and they don’t want to let us into the hotel - what??? Then after more talking on the phone he told us that we have to pay extra for arriving early - we were not happy internally but we agreed - “sure we will pay extra or at least talk to the front desk, just let us in please”. After about another 5 minutes of the security guard talking to the front desk, we could sense that things still did not get resolved, so our driver took the phone from the security guard, talked some more to the front desk, who made him ask us about 3 more times if we were going to pay and finally we were let in. At the front desk we were “greeted” by 3 staff, including a manager who was extremely unfriendly, not only that morning but during the entire stay. We told her that it was ok that our room was not ready, and that we just needed somewhere to leave our suitcases and that we were just going to walk around, go to the beach , but she would not budge, she said it was going to be $150 USD extra because we were early. This is NOT typical of any hotel we have ever stayed - generally any hotel will let you store your things if you’re early at no charge. We then asked if at least we could have food if we pay the fee, and after yet another wait, phone calls, etc she grudgingly agreed. We paid the extortion fee, they took our suitcases and we tried to change clothes in the “change room” which was a small bathroom stall on the hallway. She also made us dig through our phone and paperwork to show her our reservation because apparently she could not find or understand our name - although she never asked for a passport which would have been easier. Our name by the way was at the top of the list on the ONLY paper she had on her tiny desk. Terrible experience to be nickle-and-dimed like that, especially since on our last day the flight was so early that we had to check-out of the hotel way before the included breakfast was even open, so no we didn’t eat or drink anymore than the other guests that checked out at noon let’s say, who were able to have breakfast or even lunch. So instead of being greeted with a refreshing drink, a cold towel and smiles, we were greeted with extortion fees, attitude and negativity - thank you Casa Conde! ROOM Our room was - wrong. Our reservation was for a king sized bed and were given a room with two smaller beds. The view was of the neighbours across, in fact the buildings were so close together that from our room we could see absolutely everything going on in the guest rooms across, unless the privacy shades were closed. We had a small balcony, but we were never out because there was no view and it was so uncomfortably close to the balcony across from us. The room itself was older, very simple, nothing luxurious or special about it. The air conditioner worked great, there was lots of storage space for clothing, and the beds and pillows were comfortable enough. The TV had many channels but only 2 of them English and 1 French. Casa Conde should do their research and figure out their clientele and the language the majority of their guests speak and provide services accordingly. We have been in much smaller hotels in more remote parts of the world and they were able to provide more English and French speaking channels along with Netflix, etc. The wifi worked great everywhere at the hotel, so that was a pleasant surprise. The room and entire hotel fact was clean, although the towels had a slight unpleasant bleached smell that I didn’t like. The bathroom needs major renovation, it is very outdated. The toilet seat kept sliding off when you sat on it, the shower and tub were very old and unfriendly, the shower curtain was too small in every direction and very hard to pull across. The water pressure was not a big problem, but some mornings you had to wait a long time for hot water. Also on two occasions, including the morning before our checkout, the was no water at all, zero, apparently because of multiple power outages which affected their pumps. We had to call down to the front desk and then they sent maintenance to turn it on, so make sure you wake up super early if you have a flight or an excursion and you want to take a shower. There were also no free electrical outlets near the bed, so all our electronics had to be alternately plugged in the only outlet near the tv, across from the beds. The front door of the room also did not close properly, it had to be pushed firmly each time in order to lock, and in fact we found our room unlocked because the door did not close properly one day after housekeeping left - nothing was missing but anyone could have gone inside. All that being said, there are several types of rooms at Casa Conde and we saw rooms that other guests stayed in that had a wonderful view, and were way better overall. FOOD This was one of the strengths of this Hotel. Being a smaller hotel the food was prepared in smaller batches and it was truly delicious. Every day there was something different and although the selection was not huge, the quality and taste were excellent. There is the main buffet area available for breakfast, lunch and dinner and are two included a-la-Carte places for dinner that require reservations. We tried one of the two, the indoor restaurant, and although the service was nice and they did have a better selection of wines and top shelf spirits here, we didn’t find the food any better than at the buffet. One thing I wish they would have is snacks available until late at nigh, in case you come late in from excursions and miss the dinner hours. They also do not have room service. SPA I don’t even know if I could call it a spa, since their spa facility is under renovation and out of service, but they do have “spa services” outdoor at the back of the hotel. You would think that a nice massage and facial outside in Costa Rica would be a dream come true but once again....a disappointment. We made a reservation for the massage and facial at 2:30 pm in the middle of the hottest part of the day because the last “spa” treatment could only be done at 3:30 pm - what??? What happened to a nice relaxing evening massage while it’s cooler outside? The massage and facial treatments were decent, but it was hard to get in the relaxed mode when you could hear power tools next to you, when the masseuse was fumbling with her iPhone to put on “soothing sounds” (why we needed digital scratchy sounds of waves on an iPhone when we could hear the real waves of the ocean a few meters away is beyond me), and when my feet were literally burning because they were exposed to the hot sun. By the way, for those who are wondering about privacy and what to wear, come in your robe maybe, but leave your undergarments on because the outdoor spa facility is about 40 feet away from a whole bunch of guest rooms who have an unobstructed view of the “outdoor spa” and about 40 feet away from the glass walled sports bar. SERVICE The service again was very inconsistent. Most of the staff at Casa Conde were friendly (except for the young lady at the front counter who checked us in, who for the entire week did not want to help us with anything, and gave us attitude each and every time) However, for a small hotel with such few guests, to forget our food or refreshment orders at breakfast, lunch and dinner in the buffet multiple times and to clear the tables so slowly is inexcusable. We also heard a lot about the government of Costa Rica making English teaching a national priority - there were quite a few hotel staff who did not speak English at all - it’s not a big deal, after all we didn’t speak Spanish either, but again we have been in smaller more remote places in the world where they ensured the staff spoke English. There were also several people who were outstanding (Lizette, Miguel, Brayan) - they were friendly, always happy to help and provided great service. GROUNDS AND ATMOSPHERE The location and surrounding nature is amazing. We had howler monkeys multiple days in the trees across from our room, white faced monkeys inquisitively looking at us while we were in the pool, along with lots of parrots, iguanas, lots of song birds and the occasional raccoon and skunk at night. The beach is very close and you can carry a lounger and towel there if you are a beach person. The staff will also take the lounger for you and even bring you drinks on the beach occasionally. The ocean is very calm, with lots of fish, but the sand is dark, coarse volcanic and very hot so wear your flip flops. Due to the nature of the vegetation in this part of Costa Rica, the beach and sand are full of sticks, leaves and lots of debris. The two pools are nice, clean and well maintained - they are warm and never crowded. Lots of lounge chairs are available as well as towels, however we found that although there were always loungers available, very few if any were in the shade, and those were always occupied. The hotel should purchase some sun umbrellas which would really help. It is a very laid back, relaxing hotel, so if you are looking for entertainment, music or fun, you won’t find it here, but if you want good food, decent service and you like nature, then you will like it.

We just returned from our 10 day trip at Casa Conde and had such a great, relaxing time. The room was spacious and well maintained. The property was well groomed and beautiful along with many visits from the howling monkeys. The food was very good with plenty of variety. However one of the main reasons we loved our visit was the staff. They went out of their way to make you feel at home. A special shout out to Miguel,Hebers,Lisette,Krista,Ester,Andrea and Steven.

A wonderful low key location. Spent a week there and we all loved it. Smaller location but has all the essentials and does it all very well. Beach is public so doesn’t feel like an enclave. Great birding at and near the resort. Very short trip from Liberia.

One week of paradise, cannot thank all the staff enough for their hospitality, shout out to Lizette, Herber, Ester, Angie, Brayan and a very special thank you to Steven who made us laugh everyday. All the staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was the best we have had at any resort in the Caribbean on previous vacations, the resort was very clean, the wild life was amazing watching monkeys swing from the trees outside of our rooms. We travelled with another couple and requested to be near each other and the hotel placed us beside each other, very accommodating You will not be disappointed can’t wait to return PURA VIDA
