It'll do, but getting a bit old.

It is a serviceable enough hotel, but it is old. The furnishings need to be updated soon. There is a difference between nostalgic charm and worn-out. This place is heading toward the latter. You can tell it was once very beautiful, but it's golden days have passed. Needs a breath of fresh air.

    Gouging rates, discomfort

A well-hidden, compulsory "resort fee" drove the price per night up to a ridiculous level: this was not a resort, but a normal hotel on a noisy Manhattan street. The total price was not transparent at booking. No coffee-making equipment available in rooms (well over $250 per night), and nothing drinkable in the lobby. Room was broiling hot (although the heat was off and all the windows open on a series of cool days and nights).

First, I see some negative comments about this being a homeless shelter. No guest paid by city or not, had any impact on our stay. Nor did we see anyone on premises that seemed out of place. Service was adequate to good. No complaints. They have done a great job maintaining the lobby and other common areas while retaining the original old school NYC feel. I loved the vibe. Lots of minor flaws in room but nothing that made me think yuck. Bed was very comfortable and my understanding is room size is generous for New York. What’s concerning is the plumbing and HVAC. The clearly have a water drainage issue. More disconcerting are the noises and performance of HVAC. The loudness of the fan was an issue but I could block that out. It’s the random clanking and pops that are quite loud. Also room at night would seem to randomly seem hot then cold. Wasn’t till last day I realized the AC would randomly blast heat and back to AC. Our last night we turned it off and slept with windows open and the street noise was less bothersome! In the end, quality of sleep is lacking and we will try elsewhere next time. We picked location because mid town is so expensive and loved being at the park and so close to subway. NB this is first time a place given a recent certificate of excellence has disappointed.

Staff reasonably friendly, the room had a pair of dirty underwear in closet, bathtub didn’t drain correctly ( complained 2X2, still not correct) no place for me to fix a cup of tea in the evening no room service.

Perfect for a family of 4!

We stayed in the Excelsior Hotel in April this year (2 adults and 2 kids) for 4 nights. The hotel is really well located; adjacent to the Natural History Museum so a short walk to the subway. The staff were really helpful with recommendations for somewhere to eat etc and when we checked out early they allowed us to leave our luggage until we were collected later on in the day. The room we stayed in was on the 15th floor and was spotlessly clean. I would highly recommend this hotel for either a couple or a family of 4.
