Awesome Time in PV at the Hyatt Ziva

Hyatt Ziva is GREAT. We were quite concerned based on some of the reviews and even tried changing resorts but thankfully Air Canada Vacations told us it was too late. We were with 14, 12 and 8 year olds. The beach is awesome. The waves were big when we were there which the kids loved and it was swimmable once you got past the break. Not for babies, toddler or elderly but perfect fun for most. Pools were fine but we spent most of the time on the beach. The activities staff led by Jorge are all terrific and one can be as busy as one wants or not. The food is really good. We’ve been to a number of all inclusive and this one had the best buffet. Enough variety for everyone and some really terrific Mexican choices at breakfast lunch and dinner. They roast chicken on a spit some days and served a terrific roast beef / brisket. Blaze is a stunning spot and great for breakfast and dinner. Asian was very good as well. We went deep sea fishing with Viking (it was great). Los Verranos zip lining also great. And the town of Puerto Vallarta is awesome. We were on the 9th floor in the club tower and the views were stunning. The little buffet and bar in the club tower was great for snacks and they have the most deluxe coffee machine. The staff are all terrific. We didn’t see any timeshare folks. Taxis are abundant. Everyone in PV was very friendly and we felt very safe. Great spot if you love a great beach and the ocean and are interested in on and off resort activities.
Amazing wedding experience

Our daughter and her husband had their destination wedding here and it was AMAZING! Every detail was attended to and the music, the ceremony on the beach, the food, the tables...everything was beautiful. The whole event ran flawlessly, and we were able to relax, dance, and enjoy every moment. Before going, I was not a fan of having a destination wedding, but our week at this Hyatt resort completely changed my mind. It was an extraordinary week of memory making!
This Place Is a Mess

In the larger context, I got to be on a smooth sand beach and fall asleep to the ocean, which I’m lucky for. In the smaller context, I paid a splurge-for-me amount of money to a giant global brand and got a stressful experience in return. I’m hoping to help others avoid the same mistake. Sales Pitches: I checked in at 2:40 pm and was told it was too early for my room to be ready unless I wanted to upgrade for 80.00 a night. I declined and was told to go with another staff member who would acquaint me with the hotel while I waited. The conversation started as if it really was for that: asking what I liked to do on vacation, which restaurants I wanted to eat and when so he could make reservations for me, etc. When he learned that I was traveling alone, he said I’m “brave” and whatever man I marry will be lucky to have me. Then he launched into a sales pitch for some membership product that I’d have to attend a 90 minute meeting for and was hard selling. “No” wasn’t landing. Then he asked how old I am and went on and on about how I look younger. I know what I look like, and this was definitely a “if I tell the middle aged lady she looks young, she’ll be so happy and I’ll make a sale” tactic. Once it was clear that I wasn’t impressed with the compliment, the niceties stopped and he told me to get my bags and indicated he would *not* be making reservations for me. The sexism and heterocentrism in that conversation were unacceptable and put quite a damper on my stay. But the grift of lying about the reason for the conversation was also appalling. I also had a very aggressive sales pitch from the man working the spa desk, with ever changing answers to try and keep me talking. Room, Property and Food: The issues with my room are explained by the photos. Especially the door. I also didn’t have hot water on my first night. I was offered a new room on the second day but due to scheduling issues I decided not to give up an hour of already limited beach time to deal with switching and I was checking out in the morning. The room shouldn’t have been rented in the first place.; a proper door is a low bar. I was told at check in that the tequila bar is closed for remodeling which was a big disappointment as it was a factor in choosing this hotel over others. A heads up on the website would’ve been nice. The food and drinks are exactly what you’d expect from an all inclusive but not an all inclusive at this price point. I ordered the “crudite” and it was 4 carrot sticks, 4 slices of zucchini and 4 slices of jicama with a plastic ramekin of ranch. Resolution: I was offered 20k points in exchange for signing a non-disparagement agreement. I wasn’t planning on posting a review but that plus everything else was too shady. I don’t usually stay at Hyatts so I didn’t know how very exaggerated it was when I was told that at non-all inclusive Hyatt properties “might be 1k points a night”. I felt a little dumb for potentially walking away from 20 nights free but the agreement was just so slimey. I did a lot of research before booking this hotel and can’t help but think of all the potential negative reviews that were bought out. Maybe Hyatt should try avoiding negative reviews by not renting worn out rooms and doing creepy, aggressive sales pushes instead.
Lovely Hotel

This is a very nice hotel/resort. The grounds and landscaping and beach are lovely. The rooms have full ocean views. Our room was quite comfortable although smaller than it looks in photos. The one chair in our room was not comfortable and had no cushion. It seemed more of an outdoor patio chair than what you would expect in a hotel room. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was very nice. The food is average and what we expected for an all-inclusive. The beach is really nice. It’s private because of its topography and wide and has lovely sand. There are plenty of beach chairs but not nearly enough palapas for shade. Early in the morning all the chairs that have shade are “reserved” with towels. The hotel has a policy against this and they claim to remove towels and personal items after one hour if the chairs are unoccupied. This is not true and the odious practice of chair saving is alive and well at this resort. They really need more palapas or umbrellas both on the beach and pool areas. There simply isn’t enough shade and we often couldn’t sit out because we couldn’t find any shady spot to sit. The ocean is rough here with heavy waves and although a lot of people do go in, you can get really tossed around by the waves. We didn’t enjoy all the loud thumping music at the pool areas at various times of the day. If we were reading on our balcony or eating at a restaurant it could be quite intrusive. There are quite a few private events here (5 during the week we were here) and so the smaller pool area where we liked to sit was off limits as it was set up with tables and chairs. We didn’t enjoy the ambiance of the larger pool areas. One of the most annoying things was that only one of the two elevators was in operation and it was always busy so there was always a wait. We used the stairs quite often. The employees at this resort are wonderful; very hard working and helpful. I hesitate to mention this at all but I lost an expensive pair of Maui Jim sunglasses from our room. After much deliberation we decided to report it at the front desk. A team of security people (5 people) accompanied us to our room and conducted a thorough search of our room while I filled out a report. It was really unfortunate because of course everyone who had entered our room was likely questioned and it’s hard to believe any of them could be dishonest. We never received any followup whatsoever from the hotel. It put a bit of a shadow over the rest of our vacation.
Great stay!

Amazing spa! Friendly staff. The beach was incredible. Very large, sandy and plenty of lounge chairs with shade. The daily activities were a tad annoying if you didn't have kids but the property is so large you can easily get away from it. Definitely prioritize Blaze for food. The buffet was so/so. The room we had was great, second floor ocean view. The pillows were very very flat for me so bring your own if you're picky.
