Just returned home from a weeks stay. The rooms were clean and nicely renovated however that is probably the best of it. Food was mediocre and we ended up going off resort for many meals - probably for the best as about 75% of the people we talked to were hit with a 24 hour stomach bug. We were not warned about this upon arrival, only curious as to why hand santitizer stations were EVERYWHERE. Resort is understaffed and constantly undersupplied. Staff seemed overworked and unhappy. May go back to the island, but never again to this resort.

    Avoid like the stomach flu

Just returned from a girl’s trip at this resort and it was the worst resort I’ve ever stayed in. Stomach virus running all over hotel. One of our friends got it. Hotel should close a week and completely sanitize before opening again. It constantly smelled like sewage Food awful with long lines at breakfast buffet. Some staff nice some very rude. Sometimes girl would take our drink orders on beach but never return with drinks. Lava Rock raw meet place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Yuck! One good employee a man named Rene was very good to us though on our first night. He was only bright spot. Horrible place. I now need a vacation from my vacation.

Overall awesome but service at the bar needs some love

Would have gone 5/5 if it was not from the bad attitude behind the bars. Food: above average although choice was a little limited at the buffet, possibility to make great salads every time with a decent amount of different proteins was a must. Restaurants were good too without being complete standouts. Room: great, very recent and featuring anything you need. Housekeeping was ok too. Location: awesome with this very nice Maho beach where plains come and go, this was very spectacular and I couldn’t get enough of it. Snorkeling straight from this beach were amongst the best I made even after making a few renown spots around the Island. Being just next to the Airport is great when you come in as you’re tired of the trip and it takes only a few minutes to get in. Check in was very quick and easy. Hosting: you can get everything from great to horrible in the same 15 minutes. Bad experiences happen way too often to be considered « accidents ». Service at the bars was average to really bad, even completely arrogant sometimes. For instance, asking for a brown rhum will result in not being serve because the barmaid wants to ear « dark rhum », same for coco rhum because it is « rhum coco » as well as asking to break a 20$ to tip... I don’t expect a super genuine smile from anyone any day, but being simply ignored and never getting a glance/acknowledgement when I show up was really irritating. Unfortunately, it was the norm when you wanted a drink at the bar. To me, there are a few steps, when you are an host, that will put even the most difficult clients in a good mood. It is a shame because some other people working the floor did this amazing job like Claudette with us. Simply caring for us and our kids, we felt the warmth and it was great. Standards should be the same. One of the greatest place I made as a sunny destination, a little tainted by people who shouldn’t work with the public.

Great Value for a St. Maarten Resort

My wife and I just finished 6 days and 5 nights at the Sonesta Maho all inclusive resort in St. Marteen, the vacation was amazing and the resort was a great place to stay. I read a lot of the reviews on here prior to booking and couldn’t help but notice a fair amount of people complaining about what seemed to be minor issues. (Putting 5 exclamation points on the end of a sentence that there wasn’t any strawberry jelly left by the time you got dow to the breakfast buffet doesn’t make it sound anymore serious sorry.) Stuff happens. There are two types of people in the world and I feel like if you are a glass half empty type of person you will always find something to complain about anyway and from my experience at this resort if there is an issue to be brought up the management and guest service team are very accommodating. Also there are a lot of people comparing this resort to all inclusive in Mexico or Jamaica saying it doesn’t measure up to their experience at those places . I researched some of the prices and reviews of those places and the bottom line is we chose St. Maarten (The friendly Island) because we researched the welcoming culture of the locals and wanted to feel safe during our trip, you can’t put a price on that and St. Maarten didn’t disappoint. Sorry for the rant but I experienced an extremely hard working crew during this week and honestly feel bad about some of the reviews left on this site. Also a lot of the stuff people complained about were addressed at check in. Here’s my review of our time at Sonesta Maho. We arrived between 2-2:30 and checkout is not until 3. At the front desk we were met by Jenel who had a great smile and a warming presence , answered all our questions and gave us our all inclusive wrist band . She told us to feel free to grab lunch anywhere on the resort and come back at 3 when the room should be ready. We thought that was pretty cool and when we came back to the desk our room was ready for us. I booked through Expedia and perhaps by my own error the reservation stated that 2 full size beds were preferred. That was not going to cut it since this was a special vacation with myself and my wife. 2 days before arrival I sent an email to guest services letting them know that we would really appreciate a king sized bed. (We has also leveled up our room to a better view when making the reservation so I told them that the king bed was the most important thing and they could put us in any view room as long as we had the big bed) . We receive an email back within 24 hours that stated they would do everything they could to accommodate my wife and I’d special vacation. We got our king sized bed, and as far as how our view ended up , well you can take a look at one of the pictures I posted as it was amazing. I recommend going for the upgraded ocean view room, especially if you are gonna spend time on the balcony. There was also a plate of sweets and a hand written letter from guest services telling us to enjoy our stay, as if that wasn’t enough I heard knock on our door and an associate of the resort named Anna was standing there with balloons and a bottle of champagne and 2 glasses. Needless to say we were off to a great start with the service at this resort. The food was good at the buffet, and there were plenty of choices. Always salad and soup and a hot pasta station, and a bunch of changing entrees. The gym was great, all the equipment was brand new and clean and a decent variety for the size. The towels and fruit were a nice touch. Everything from fish to chicken farm to taco night. There is a great beach only a 10 minute walk away (Mullet Bay) If you want value I definitely recommend the resort. We would stay here again if we ever come back to St. Maarten. Thank you Sonesta Maho for giving us a great place to stay for our special vacation

Travelled tons and this is by far the worst hotel experience I have ever had. Sunwing needs to re-evaluate selling this property. Rooms - renovated and clean. The main issue here is, if your room faces golf course side, you also have to smell and witness the churning waste filtration facing all balconies on this side. I could not even enjoy a drink on the balcony as felt so sick from the smell. And, not sure what the loud noises were from... sounded like huge air conditioners. This week construction as well so loud trucks and beeping. Food - mediocre at best... just tried to get though it. Best for me was the Palms restaurant for lunch and the jerk chicken. Illness - Group of 7 of us and so far 3 spent 24 hours with gastro symptoms. Apparently, so many were experiencing the same thing. They likely need to shut this resort down for a week to stop the spread. I spoke to several cab drivers that said it's always an issue with this resort Front desk/management - I did try to speak to management about some of the issues however they didn't seem to be that interested. It was as if they have heard the same thing a million times and just eye rolled me away. Room Service - nada Beach - very windy since we have been here and our beach was non-existent. Pool - there is only one pool and the liner is all wavy at the bottom - so strange - never experience anything like it! Just felt disgusting on your feet. Entertainment - fun show just outside of the resort and inside casino across the road. Great singers and dancers! Wait staff - most of them were great. Just the odd bar tender was a little grumpy - nothing a few tips didn't take care of. Mullet Bay- short walk and beautiful! Bring your own beer/drinks from the room and sandwiches from the coffee shop. $7 per person for a chair and umbrella. Coffee Shop - some days you can serve yourself, until another "outbreak" of the flu happened and then a table was put up to block you off and they would serve you at that point. Asian restaurant - OMG so awful ... The Point Restaurant - it was ok - fish dinner was cold both times. Creme Brule was good Buffet - cant mess up an omlette and dinner was ok... just freaked out touching any of the serving spoons for fear of getting the "bug" Spa and Gym - also didn't want to chance going to either of these The island itself is beautiful... like ending on a positive note! You work hard for your money - spent a little extra and go somewhere else! Seriously!!! DO NOT DO IT!
