The hotel is OK. But the best of all is the kindness of people who work there. That is the most important aspect of any hotel. Everyone is very nice. The rest is OK. Food is fine, nothing special. The rooms are clean. The beach is excellent.

The photos are not a true indication of the property as it is today. The BEACH is to die for, we have never seen water so clear. Would love to see the sand groomed overnight. The general appearance of the property is shabby, lawns and gardens very untidy, boardwalk to the beach quite dangerous with loose and rotten boards. The two main pools are ok but the smaller one totally unusable. We arrived at mid-day but couldn't check-in until 4pm even if our room was available. We were signed in so as to use the pool and amenities. Nice. At check-in you are given a key card and told where the dining room is. That is it!! No map of the property, no list of amenities, no information what so ever. You are not told you need a chit to obtain pool towels, the chits are given out at Reception! The buffet food and food hygeine shown was disgraceful. The cook stations, sometimes three in operation at one time but only one cook!! Ducking and diving from fish to beef/pork. New supplies are place on top of old, yuk. The bread station was superb. The wait staff were superb. The drinks were good. Our room was tired, no maintenance for quite some time, Basin plug didn't work neither did the wardrobe door. The little fridge worked extremely well, turned everything into ice! All in all I would not recommend this property, its way overpricd for what it is.

First stay at the Roc Barlovento! (September 2018, not October!)

I went with my best friend and soul sister of 40 years, Marie. We have some friends who have been going to the Roc Barlovento for several years for 2 weeks a year. So on their recommendation, we booked for a week in September of 2018. (We have both been to higher rated resorts as Marie is a retired travel agent!) The Resort The Roc Barlovento has a relaxed atmosphere - it is a resort with manners but without airs…it is not pretentious. Arrival Juan greeted us off the bus and carried our suitcases to check in. We were greeted by the front desk staff who apologized that our rooms weren’t ready. Check in is in the afternoon and we arrived at 10 am, it was not at problem so we relaxed in the lobby for a few hours until our room was ready. Meeting Klaus While we were in the lobby we almost immediately met the General Manager of the Roc Barlovento, Klaus. Klaus was always approachable and seemed always available for anyone who wanted a quick chat. Room 203 The room location was the perfect location! It was a five minute walk to the beach, a two minute walk to the pool, lobby bar and buffet. The maids did a very good job of cleaning. We had hot water everyday and everything worked! The bathroom door is frosted glass but we didn’t think that was a problem. The room had a musty smell to it but it was September and the humidity was insanely high. Next time I’ll bring some Febreeze or maybe a scented candle. We went nose blind pretty quick to the musty smell. It’s definitely not a deal breaker. We didn’t complain to the front desk staff as we understood that this is part of visiting Cuba in September or other times of the year when the humidity is so thick if feels like you’re swimming in the air! The bed was comfortable. No, really, it was! The pillows were typical Cuban pillows - flat etc. but we brought our own in a vacuum bag and left them behind. The balcony was very narrow as others have pointed out but we still went out and stood on it a few times. Good enough! The Pools We stayed in the main pool close to the lobby bar and buffet for the most part. Yes, as others have mentioned there were people breaking the rules and smoking and eating in the pool, but not concerning. The second pool is about a 3 minute walk from the main pool, it’s next to the Snack Bar. It looked lovely, but we never went in because we enjoyed the pool that was right next to our room. Maybe we will venture over to the other pool next trip! Lobby/Lobby Bar The Lobby is very clean with lots of tables and chairs. On rare occasion there wasn’t enough seating for everyone, but eventually someone got up and left and if you were quick you could grab a seat. The workers keep the lobby spotless and work very hard to serve people as fast as they can. They were awesome. The drinks menu was great! We both enjoyed the blender drinks in the Lobby Bar, specifically the Pina Coladas! Awesome! The lobby bar is well stocked with premium brands. The Lobby has a small non-smoking section on the breezy side of the lobby, closest to the front entrance/exit. Lobby Bathroom The lobby bathrooms all worked, had toilet seats, toilet paper and were clean! The bathroom (women's, I would assume the men's as well but I had no reason to visit that side!) has a wheelchair accessible stall that is large enough for a wheelchair and an attendant. Buffet The food was good. It was usually hot (always at least warm) and there was always something good to eat. Some people found it repetitive, I found something different to eat every meal, it was great! Snack Bar We ate lunch here a few times. The fries were hot, the hamburgers were hot! Lots of toppings available! Animation Team/Entertainment It is the first time I ever wanted to get involved with the animation team because everyone looked like they were having a great time. Maybe next time, we will play a game or two! Weather in Varadero, Cuba in September Looking at weather reports became an obsession leading up to the adventure. The weather report stated it was going to rain and thunder storm for the entire week. Marie brought a cribbage board and a deck of cards. Worst case scenario, we would still be drinking piña coladas and hanging out! The sun shone for the entire week. Days went by when there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The heat was incredible, the humidity was high. It was fantastic! We had rain once, at about 9pm for about 20 minutes! After being at larger resorts, this one was a nice change! Def my new favourite Cuban resort. Special thanks to Klaus, Juan, Dalia, Iris, Diesy, Ibriany and all of the staff at the Roc Barlovento! Well done all of you!

We have been going to Varadero for quite a few years. The hotel we usually stay at was under repairs. We found this little jewel, the Roc Barlovento. We have been there twice last year, in February and April. We are planning, as a matter of fact, it is already booked for two weeks this November. I cannot say enough about this beautiful hotel. It is well situated, clean, and the perfect size. The restaurants are clean and have excellent food. The staff is amazing!!! Carlos at the beach is one of a kind, a sweet man. We can't wait to be back in November. It is our hotel of choice!!! Lina

"I just recently returned from a week long trip to Cuba, where I stayed at Roc Barlovento. One experience on my trip that will last with me a lifetime, was the excellent customer service I continuously received from the amazing Lia. She did her out most due diligence to ensure my time at their resort was one to remember. I highly recommend this resort for people who are looking to get a very relaxing vacation. To mention one more staff that truly made my experience there was Hilda at the main lobby bar. This employee was very kind but also had an remarkable sense of humour that truly enlighten my days spent at Roc Barlovento. This is a resort I will always look to stay at when I visit the wonderful country of Cuba. Until next time my friends, Cheers! "
