Beautiful Renovation!! But our stay could have been much better.
Sue6263 (Rhode Island) on Mar 23, 2024
You better grab a coffee or something cause this won’t be short but I wish it could be. I will start by saying we stayed at the Marriott prior to the renovation in 2014 and loved it so much we were back in 2016. We were truly looking forward to returning this trip. We booked our reservations back in April of 2023, as soon the weeks opened up for March 2024. We were staying a total of 19 nights. We booked a week at the Renaissance which we had not stayed at before and were treated so well, complimentary ocean view upgrade without saying a word and staff was top notch all around. We have been Bonvoy members for almost 20 years, we are Titanium Elite and felt so appreciated there. In all our years we have had ONE issue with a Marriott and that was just because of 2 employees and not the resort or the rest of the staff -that’s is ONE issue ever! We have been extremely loyal to the brand and have always received the best treatment. Our next reservation was for just 2 nights at the the Marriott because I needed to split our reservation to try to use our Nightly Upgrade (formally Suite Nights) and therefore our next reservation was for the remaining 10 nights at the Marriott. Our Nightly Upgrade request was submitted in October. On March 10th, the day of our arrival for our first 2 day reservation I received an email that our Nightly Upgrade had been accepted and we were confirmed for a Ocean View room for the 10 nights, it was the lowest of the levels that we requested but we were thrilled to get the upgrade! Even on my Bonvoy app our reservation confirmed we had a Ocean View room. When we arrived to check in for our first 2 night reservation we arrived at 3:30pm, check in is 4:00pm-we waited in line at the front desk, luckily the line was not long, but then we get told “I can’t check you in you need to go the Reef Club”. Signage and information is a big issue here we have found. There is nothing directing Elite members to the Reef Club. Fine no problem, wait in line again, mind you there is one agent in the Reef Club and we get told our room is not ready, no problem we are early! We expected as usual you will get a text or email that your room is ready. We understand island time and we waited 3 hours and heard nothing. I texted the same chat that they could have notified us and asked was it ready and we received a reply yes come to the desk. So off to the desk, we get told “oh we thought you would have complained by now and thought you knew it was ready”, look we are very easy going and understand things happen. We were not offered any type of upgrade even though website showed better rooms available but it was only 2 nights and we got our Nightly upgrade for the next reservation so it was absolutely fine, we didn't even ask. The 11th, the day before our next reservation, when I looked at the app our Ocean View room was gone! We went to the Reef Club and saw Jessica, when I told her we had a confirmed upgrade she looked at the computer and said “you have no upgrade”. I explained we received a confirmation, she left to go check with the back office. When she returned she said” if you have proof of this email you need to forward it to this email and there are no guarantees you will get it” and she provided us with an email. I was at that point feeling that if I didn’t have that email there was no way they would do anything for us. I had that email and sent it immediately and we were told come back at our convenience later to give them time to see if anything could be done. I completely felt that our Marriott loyalty meant so little! I kept checking the app and finally saw our reservation changed back to Ocean View. I will share some true positives before I vent about our other issues we experienced and need for management that we saw-the resort renovation is great, the rooms are beautiful and the new lap pool is gorgeous. We had excellent meals at C-Spice and Ray and the staff were excellent and professional! Next issue-Reef Club So after seeing prior reviews the cost is now down to $40.00 per day and we took the $20.00 per person/per day credit therefore Reef Club was $20.00 each per day. After experiencing other Marriott brand lounges this does not come away near close. Breakfast 7-11am and some food and happy hour at 5-7. The first 4 days food was not labeled, you needed to lift off lid and guess-we have no food allergies so it was not an issue for us but we heard others complaining. One lady said “oh look we have mystery meat. 1, 2, and 3!” We heard a manager get after staff for not using the signs so since then the night offerings were labeled. You have access to a mini fridge all day but that is soda, juice, and water. You have to sign a form that you will not remove anything from the Reef Club, except water. We saw 2 young girls chased down when then left with their open sodas. There is no check in procedure, sometimes there is someone at the desk but usually there is no one there, we were only asked once for our room number by someone we only saw once. Guests were saying that people could just walk in and we heard some had done just that. Also heard people were given Reef Club for no charge, again loyalty means very little. I must say though Andrea was wonderful and always had a smile on her face! Jente was very friendly and personable. Lack of information….. We were asked by other guests if we had heard from our personal concierge, we said what??? Nope not a thing!!! Not that we needed one but it seems like the least they offer the more they get away with no doing. Also heard just before our last day we were suppose to be able to get snorkel gear for free one hour per day during our stay, we snorkeled off property- so never actually found out if that was included. Digital schedule board in lobby had March 18th schedule up for at least 5 straight days - you get nothing printed. Only notification we received was for private events happening on what dates on the beach but we had not received anything for the many prior events that happened. And now my favorite subject Bath Towels!!! First 2 nights were fine, then it was guess what we get today!!! We would usually get at least one hand towel and a bath mat but definitely no bath towels. So we would have to track down housekeeping to beg for them. This continued for days until we were lucky enough to get 2 bath towels for 2 days in a row. On the 20th housekeeping came in the morning while we were in the room and when she left we notice again no bath towels when asked she said no, no bath towels you need to go to the front desk. So 4pm go to Reef Club and see Jessica, who says she will let housekeeping know and I said they were the ones who sent us here and we were heading out for dinner and could use towels, so she left and came back and said there were no bath towels on property that the laundry service comes late. When I returned to our floor housekeeping was down the hall and I asked them and they said the washer was broken, no bath towels. So not sure what the issue really is but we used Het Washok and got clothes back same day, you should try them! With the exception of the prove you got an upgrade email, all of these issues aren’t big but combined it was not a good experience. We just shook our heads and laughed that wow this place is not run well. Have to tell you though we went back to Renaissance for dinner and the staff knew we had moved to the Marriott and asked how it was going and they were beyond kind to even offer to get us towels to take back. We totally appreciated their offer but declined. That is what Marriott service is, they are what would bring us back to Curacao. Mr. Gary Farstad, we truly would have liked to have met you at the reception on the 20th but we had a dinner reservation and were running late cause we just had a hand towel to dry off ??and an hour would not have been enough time for me to vent the issues we encountered. I truly hope you will take the information I have shared with you to improve the service so that it matches the beautiful resort. I would be more then willing to discuss our stay if you have any further questions. Thank you!
Just beware

We arrived on March 19 at 1:15 at the airport and are taxi transfer arranged by the Marriott did not show , no big deal we secured a taxi on our own. We checked in at 2:00 , room not ready no big deal 4:00 is there policy , no welcome drink not even a mention. 4:00 our room was ready , I inquired about upgrading to a suite and was immediately told no upgrades are free. I advised them I was willing to pay so they showed me one unfortunately it overlooked a parking lot from the bedroom, I declined . We received our two queen bed ocean front room , all was good. UNTIL the Beach below our room was transformed into a welcome conference party , ended at 10:45 and then clear it up till 11:30. Spoke with management offers us breakfast . Well after speaking with management and the third welcoming party is beginning put together. Today she offered a massage, I even offered again to upgrade to a suite but nothing available, I was offered the same category but again overlooking the parking lot and public beach . Lastly it’s day 4 and sheets not changed and it’s 3:22 and room still not cleaned. We are going to visit town hopefully room will be cleaned by tonight. Regards Just not 5 stars
