    Isolated, Well-Maintained, Disappointing Food

The grounds and rooms are well-maintained. Housekeeping is good and employees are generally friendly. This hotel is isolated which is good in terms of quiet. It’s not as good for access to, say, a rain forest adventure. Too far. As in 3-4 hours. The beach is not usable. Don’t think you’ll be building sandcastles on this beach. We didn’t see one beach chair brought onto the sand or a single swimmer. The food just isn’t very good. A new executive chef should be hired in our opinion. It’s average at best. And we tried touted Sabanero (tough steak, soggy bass) and the Mansito buffet and Azul and the Asian restaurant Tamarine (not special at all.) We enjoyed eating out twice at El Pelicano in Tamarindo. Strong meals. Bass. Snapper. Sushi. Steak. This town is worth visiting as it’s only about 30 minutes by car and there are some cool shops/boutiques. Service can be slow at the JW. Don’t take it personal. It’s the culture here. There was also an issue with the computers at the restaurants for at least four days. They would freeze and employees were forced to hand write orders and checks. Our zip line/animal sanctuary trip to Diamanté was fun. About 1.5 hours away by car. Worth the trip in our opinion. This is a pretty resort. The food operations at JW must be overhauled. We had a nice 6 nights. We would not return because of the food, the beach and the distance. But we had a pleasant stay. Largely because we used points and not cash.

Stayed 3 nights at end of tour of CR , including 1 full free day to enjoy all the wonderful facilities of the hotel. Room is excellent , really good use of space, very good ( and needed ) air con , as well as a ceiling fan both in bedroom and on private terrace. There is a fridge in room so a stop at Walmart en route is recommended, as we did, if bar prices are a bit steep for you ( a nice bottle of Malbec is $37 in hotel ). We were on level 3 and thus had a garden, not ocean , view but it was lovely nonetheless. The huge infinity pool is very well designed, it is all one ,but looks as if it is a series of smaller pools. There are sufficient high quality sun loungers and umbrellas for all, no need to scramble to reserve. Service around the pool is good ( $6 local beer, $20 nachos to share ). Hotel is on beach but swimming area is a few yards to the left. Lots of wildlife to spot and a lovely sunset. There is a hamburger bar which was quite reasonable for the evenings. We however ate at Tamarine Asian fusion 1 night , where we were royally served by William , and next night at Sabanero steak house where the service from Andreas was equally good. Bills $91 and $127 for 2 with wine. Well worth the money if you can afford it. The hotel is very remote. We were on coach tour so we were collected for our tour of Palo Verde , and loved our free day poolside. However if travelling independently own transport , or staying by the pool is recommended. A really lovely hotel and a great way to end our tour.

This was our final destination on a 2 week tour of Costa Rica and we had a mixed experience here. Check-in was terrible--our concierge was dry, uninformative and spoke so quickly in a mixture of English and Spanish we had difficulty understanding much of the information. This was in sharp contrast to every other resort and hotel we stayed in during our trip. That said, the rest of our stay was very pleasant and the other staff members were fantastic. Isolated-yes, this is an all-inclusve place because it has to be. You will not go to town or other restaurants in the area--there are none. The resort offers 5 different restaurants, and all are good but pricey. The pool is nice, but very crowded and the beach fairly small, with rip-current warnings posted. It's beautiful, but only one small swimming area available on the beach. Mountain bikes are available for rent and there's a great trail system in the area, but it is poorly marked and not well-advertised. We discovered it by accident on a walk. That said, the undeveloped areas and wildlife in this place are awesome and the resort sorely misses the mark by not capitalizing on this aspect of the property. Howler monkeys, whitetail deer, foxes and a plethora of bird species abound in this area, so when you tire of sitting shoulder to shoulder with a few hundred other pool-goers, take a walk in the forest! Rooms are well-appointed and the private balconies are a treat. Overall a good experience, but has much more potential.

this hotel is out in the middle of no where but....you don't need to go anywhere. they have everything on site including great restaurants, pools, saunas, the ocean, wonderful grounds to walk around in , a golf course and if you are in the wandering mood, the hotel can arrange private drivers for a tour of the areas surrounding the hotel

This is a beautiful resort, but it is totally isolated from everything. If that is what you're looking for, this is the place for you. The pool area is beautiful and crowded, while the beach only has a small area that is suitable for swimming. The rooms were beautiful with private balconies or patios. BUT, there were essentially no activities or things to do, other than sit by the pool or swim in it. I'm generally looking for more than that in a resort.
