Roosters at 3:30am

This is our 2nd time staying at the Castle Kaha Lani. Both times we booked an ocean front room and the views are breathtaking. The staff is very friendly, the condo was clean, there is security patrolling at night and the area is secluded from a lot of tourists. However, this time we were in building 8 in room 327 which is at the very end of the complex next to the park. Unfortunately, we were awakened EVERY morning of our vacation in paradise at 3:30am by the roosters. Last time we were in building 7 in the middle of the complex and had rooms on each side of us so that may have insulated us some from the sounds and there was maybe 1 rooster in front of that building. This room had at least 10 in front and beside it, because of the park being right next to the room. Closing the windows did not help. But even if you think you may go back to sleep after the first sounds, they keep it up for hours. I just had to let others know that even though it's an amazing place to stay it really does put a huge damper on your vacation to NEVER get to sleep past 3:30am. I would think that would also be true of rooms 227 and 127 which are also at the end next to the park. If you do get stuck in one of these rooms I would ask for huge discount in price because of this horrible inconvenience to your stay.
Good Location

My wife and I stayed at this resort for 10 days in mid September. It is a great location for touring Kauai and a short drive to the airport. The grounds of the resort are very well kept and presents a nice surrounding. The beach in front of the resort is not assessable with fairly high waves and not good for swimming but there is a state park a short walk away with a nice beach. The rooms are not air conditioned so the Windows must be kept open to get a breeze flowing through for cooling. The afternoons were a bit warm but the evenings are cool and comfortable. The downside of keeping the window louvers open is your exposed to a lot of outside noise, which is not a problem during the daytime but at night can be very annoying. We were kept awake on a number of nights with people yelling and laughing right outside our room. If your looking for a quiet place to stay, I would pick another hotel. The room does have a number of stand up oscillating fans but we're extremely dirty. Our mattress was completely worn out and very difficult to sleep on. We called the resort manager and they replaced it with a new one. The noise from people walking around upstairs was also quite annoying.
Mid-range resort could offer good value proposition

Kaha Lani resort has an excellent location on the east side of Kauai, about 5 miles north of the airport and a couple of miles south of Kapaa township. It's a mid-range resort so not the smartest but practical for families. There is one small pool but no jacuzzi. Communal BBQs and communal laundromat (card only). No on-site restaurant. The grounds are well-maintained but the buildings look dated (to me, anyway). Some individual units have been well modernised but others would also benefit from rejuvenation. Unfortunately the condo we rented was one of the "tired" ones, but to be fair we still had a good vacation there. As always it pays to shop around and compare prices. If you can get a good deal at Kaha Lani it might appeal to you more than it did for us. BTW, when you do go to Kauai, make a point of shopping at the local markets: "A quarter the price and twice as nice!"
