    Very disappointing all around!

The Good: The restaurant staff and the pool The restaurant staff are very kind and eager to assist. Yuliana in particular is great and helped us track down our bottle of tequila we had left at our table at lunch the day before. There was a bit of a language barrier at times when it came to ordering but they tried hard and were very nice. The pools were pretty nice. Not too crowded though very shallow. There was a swim up bar and lots of lounge chairs available. Two jacuzzies: one family, one adults only. One salt-water infinity pool which was nice. One pool had a volleyball net. The Bad: The front desk staff and the rooms The front desk staff on the other hand aren't very helpful or accommodating at all. I had requested at time of booking a couple months prior to our trip a room with a king-sized bed and (preferably) a view, mentioning that it was a special occasion as we would be celebrating my girlfriend's birthday while we were down there. However, when my girlfriend and I checked in to our hotel, we were given a ground floor room, facing an alleyway with two double (not even queen-sized) beds that were cemented to the floor and couldn't even be pushed together. When we requested a different room, we were told that the only rooms available with a king sized bed were ones with an ocean view and since we didn't pay for an ocean-view, there was nothing they could do. Basically they let a room stay empty rather than be accommodating, even though I mentioned we were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday. They were operating at limited capacity due to Covid so they easily could've made it work if they wanted to but they didn't want to. They said come back in the morning with our luggage and they *might* have something for us but if they did, we wouldn't be able to know for sure or move our stuff in until 3. They ended up finally switching us to a ground floor room with a king-sized bed but it was not a good way to start our romantic birthday getaway together. Similarly, when we asked them to search the lost and found for our tequila bottle, they didn't even bother looking and just told us it wasn't there. You could tell the front desk people didn't enjoy working there and didn't care about helping or accommodating guests. As for the rooms, they were nothing special and definitely weren't 5-star quality. A lot of the furniture was worn down, chipped, cracked etc. The beds consisted of a sheet over the mattress (not fitted) and two linen sheets, that's it. No blanket or anything like that. The mattress was also incredibly firm, like laying on a carpeted floor. I woke up with an incredibly tight back ever day because of it. Our toilet leaked one day too and left a bunch of water on the bathroom floor. The nightstands had granite or marble tops that weren't actually secured to the nightstands themselves, just laid on top of them. I've definitely stayed in lower rated hotels with much nicer rooms. The Ugly: The food and drinks The food and drinks were pretty bad all around, even for an all-inclusive resort. Every drink was way to sweet so we had to order doubles just to make them drinkable. The lunch was good the first day but very subpar everyday after. The breakfast was awful. I've never had worst French toast. The pancakes were burnt, the bacon were thin and limp and the chocolate milk was warm. It was terrible. They advertise multiple "real" non-buffet restaurants but only one ever seems to be open and when you call to make a reservation, the front desk tells you they're all booked up but when you walk by it's largely empty or they're accepting walk ups. (Again, another example of the poor customer service provided by the front desk.) We ate at the "Italian" restaurant on site our first night (I use quotation marks because half the time it's a Mexican restaurant apparently). The food was okay, not great. The plating was appealing but the food itself lacked seasoning and was nothing to write home about. The service was good but very slow. The tiramisu dessert was one of the driest, most unappealing things I have ever put in my mouth. One bite was one bit too many. We tried multiple times to get reservations at the sushi restaurant they apparently have but it was closed every time we tried. We were told it is only open on Sunday and Wednesday. The Sky Bar was closed due to Covid apparently. All-in-all, Barcelo Gran Faro did not live up to its star rating and was disappointing overall. If you are looking for an all-inclusive hotel with 5-star, accommodating service, good food, comfy beds, and multiple restaurant choices, Barcel Gran Faro is definitely not for you. I would not recommend.

The staff can be kinder, they have restrictions for dinner, you have to stay longer than 1 week to be able to try the specialities restaurants. good variety of food, but boring to have breakfast and lunch at the same place everyday. the beach is dirty, many cockroaches, not much to do about it, but there are horses by the beach now and then, should not allow to let them be there if not gonna clean what they leave on the way (poop). the activities doesn't start in time and the daily activities sheets are not updated, I was there for my bday and they did nothing special for me, even when i let them know. As usual, they are more focused on foreigns.

So, I am an absolute fan of Barcelo properties. With that being said, I thought this would be like my previous experiences. However, I will NEVER stay here again! Foremost, before arriving, I sent the concierge an email (provided by someone I spoke with in customer service). I was trying to get something set up for my friend’s birthday and he NEVER responded. So, when I get to the resort, I finally found out who he was. I asked him why he had not responded to my email after over a week. He first tried to say he didn’t receive anything from me. THEN he actually checked his email and said “oh, yes...I received it Wednesday (I checked in Friday). So, even then he didn’t think it prudent to respond? Next...so, I elected to upgrade to Premium because “allegedly” there were so many additional benefits. Well, that went out the window. The Premium lounge now opens 2 hours later (9:00 am instead of 7:00 am) and even then they are late to open it! Today I was LITERALLY standing outside the lounge with other Premium members and none of the staff seemed to care when we were asking why it wasn’t opened yet. It finally was opened around 9:10. Next...I got back to the hotel around 8:00 pm after an excursion. I came to my room only to find that NOTHING had been done! And I’m supposed to be “PREMIUM,” right? So, I go to the front desk and advise that my room has not been cleaned ALL day. The front desk woman said she would have someone go now to take care of it. So, I got a couple of drinks at the bar (about an hour or so), go back to my room and what do you know...STILL NO SERVICE! I went BACK to the front desk and it was FINALLY cleaned. (Pics attached). Premium room service is advertised as being 24-hours, however that’s not the case! They are only open from 11 am to 10 pm. The breakfast is mediocre at best (same stuff EVERY DAY). There is no turn down service, no special gift (usually Premium members get a welcome letter, chocolate covered strawberries and Champagne). I received absolutely NOTHING upon arrival. There is also a sense of “I don’t care” from the staff that are not in roles that typically get tipped (i.e. front desk staff, concierge, activities). Literally there was a line of people with one person working the front desk and then you had the activities guy and concierge on their phones at their desk doing absolutely nothing! Why are they not cross-trained to assist when there’s CLEARLY a long line of guests?! Overall, this was a total waste of my $1300! I will be back to Cabo, but certainly won’t be staying at this property, and would recommend other guests to stay some place else as well. The Viceroy is next door, and I was so tempted to check out and stay there.

Despite COVID, we took our annual trip to the Barcelo in San Jose. Yes staff and food are scaled back, since occupancy is down, but we still found service to be great and food options very good. Numerous updates to the resort in the last year, including updated premium area with small adult-only pool. This is Ivan's domain and he is just awesome. He took time to get to know us and even made our son's 13th birthday extra special! Other servers around the pool area are great as well: Luis, Tomas and Jorge. Daniel and Freddy kept the coffee coming every morning. My last shout-outs are to Oscar and Cecelia at guest services. They were kind and helpful. Please tip these people - they work so hard with a smile on their face!

We recently returned from 6 nights at Gran Faro Los Cabos. This property is well located to shops, restaurants and other services - all within walking distance. The town of San Jose is ~20 minute walk. The staff of Gran Faro was amazing. We upgraded to Premium Level and were taken to a special lounge for check-in. There you can find snacks and a full bar of premium liquor. Our room, #2191, was on the first floor, ocean front, and steps away from the private Premium pool and sun deck. Rooms are large and well-appointed. Bed comfortable and the strongest A/C we've ever experienced in our many trips to Mexico. The bathroom is also large and great water pressure. The staff is exemplary and a special shout-out to Ivan at the Premium pool area who never missed an opportunity to take care of us. Covid testing was arranged at check-in, was well handled, with quick turnaround of results. The only area of improvement is the food. In the Italian and Mexican restaurants the food was OK; nothing special. However, at the buffet, the waffles are to-die-for as was the picadillo. While they didn't have a big wine selection, what they did offer was good. The resort is immaculate and safe throughout with temperatures taken upon every entry into the hotel and at every restaurant, including sanitizing hands. Despite the pandemic, the Gran Faro staff made us feel like things were back to normal. And that contributed to a very relaxing stay. Thank you!
