Excellent hotel, given free upgrade to Palace and premium wristband due to expected noise near room we were staying in at the Tropical. Very good service a lot of hotels would jus have expected us to put up with the noise.

This is my 3rd attempt to write a review of our stay here. Both of my first two reviews were not published, for some reason. We stayed here for a week and had a really wonderful and unique experience. Upon check-in, we were happily surprised at being upgraded to a premium room for free. We received a wonderful room that overlooked the main pool, and could not have been happier. Our room was very comfortable, and had a nice, private bathroom with two showers (one over the tub, and one next to the tub.) On our first evening there, room service surprised us by bringing a bottle of champagne and petit a fours to our room. Wow, what did we do to deserve this?! How nice. The A\C could have been a little colder at night, and the pillows were very flat. But the bed was very comfortable, and we had a nice 42" flat-screen t.v. on the wall with a few channels in English. The whole reason I picked this resort was based on the reviews of travelers encountering sea turtles in the ocean behind the hotel here. They were not wrong. On our very first day of snorkeling, we had two sea turtles come right up to us! And each day afterwards, we saw sea turtles every day while snorkeling. How amazing and wonderful! If you are a beach person, you will love the sea life and the water here. While there was some seaweed on the beach, it had little effect on the water. And there were workers cleaning up the seaweed every day on the beach. There is a small fee of approximately $1 per day at check-in, to help with the environmental cleanup of the seaweed. Well worth it, in my opinion. During our stay we tried every restaurant at the hotel, as well as one of the a la carte restaurants at the Maya Mall. Both the Mirador and Hacienda buffets at the hotel offered a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and meats to suit any palate. The breakfast buffet included made-to-order omelets, sausages, fresh fruits, fresh fruit juices, a wide variety of breads, Mexican specialties, and just about anything you can think of for a morning meal. The Coral Grill, while a bit more limited in choices, still had a great variety of options for lunch. There were salads of all kinds, including pulpo (octopus) salad, fresh calamari, pork chops, steaks, grilled chicken, nachos, hamburgers, guacamole (at every meal) fresh fish, etc. We especially enjoyed the mixed squash which included eggplant, onion, tomatoes and calabacita. It was super-tasty and very fresh. With my being a huge seafood lover, I also tried the grilled calamari, mussels and pulpo salad. On two occasions they also served grilled shrimp at lunch. While they were overcooked from being kept warm too long, I still loved them and was happy to have the extra option at lunch. Among the a la carte dinners, we found the Rodizio (Brazilian Steakhouse) to be our favorite. The waiters were professional, polite, attentive, and entertaining as well. There's a great salad bar to start your dinner, a full-service bar, and excellent steaks to satisfy just about anyone. There are also pasta dishes on the menu, but why come to a steakhouse to have pasta? We both had ribeye steaks, and they were delicious. The Caribe (seafood themed restaurant) was a close 2nd place for us, while the Brasserie came in 3rd. The Brasserie had delicious french options such as grilled lamb chops, and grilled steak with lobster. But the dishes we tried came out luke-warm, and the service waned after desert. Our least favorite was the Tokyo restaurant at the Maya Mall. We felt like we were being rushed thru the whole dinner. Nice atmosphere, but it could use a few improvements. The starter salad with what was supposed to be ginger dressing, was really just lettuce and tomato with a diluted mayonnaise on it. Not bad, but not what it's supposed to be. The main course was good, but they only allow you to choose one meat option. When vacationing, we would have preferred to try two or three meats from the menu. During our stay we walked the whole length of the beach between our hotel, and the new, soon-to-be-open "Adults Only" hotel at the other end. Each hotel here (there are five beyond our own) has it's own charm and personality. Really, I don't think you can go wrong by picking any of them for a vacation stay. We also rode the double-decker bus to visit the Maya Mall, which was found to be a very comfortable way to traverse around the huge complex. We visited the Maya Mall just before having dinner there, and were a little disappointed that more than half of the stores were already closed at 7:30 pm. But other than that, it was a nice experience to venture out from our own hotel. One of the fantastic things about this hotel is the absolutely huge and beautiful main swimming pool. Wow, I have never seen a pool this big, ever! The swim-up bar at the main pool was great as well. The bartenders were always friendly, attentive and accomodating. Whatever drink you wanted, they would make it for you. We found the waiters\waitresses at all of the restaurants to be very friendly and attentive as well. We especially appreciated the service at the Coral Grill where we were always welcomed with a smile for lunch. I'd like to especially thank the Chefs and Cooks who work tirelessly behind the scenes preparing, cooking, creating and delivering fresh dishes to all of the guests here. While they are hardly seen, their hard work is evidenced in the excellent, fresh dishes that we saw at every meal. A few personal suggestions that would make the experience a little better, in my humble opinion: Offer more baked\grilled fish at lunch at dinner buffets, including a night that includes lobster at the buffets. I also think a little more security around the pool and beach area would be helpful. (We had one day where our room cards were taken from my Wife's beach bag, while we were in the pool.) The guest service desk corrected the situation, but it did cause some stress for us when it happened. While I knew the resort was huge when I booked it, be prepared to walk a lot. The distance from the rooms to dinner or the lobby is quite long. Depending on where you room is located, this can be quite a long stroll. In conclusion, this resort a a great value and offers something for just about everyone. The ocean location, the service, and the accomodations are all top-notch. You would be hard-pressed to find a better option for the price. We will definitely return, hopefully sooner than later. Snorkeling with sea turtles every day right behind our hotel, was the absolute highlight of our trip!

We had a great time as a family of 3 at maya palace. The service at the Buffett at the palace by Angelica Poot and her partner was amazing. Could not have asked for a better stay! The weather was great and the a la cartes was enjoyable as well.
