My wife and I were here for seven days in March. We have been to Cuba on multiple occasions and understand there are concessions to be made. In the case of this hotel the standards are much lower than expected. Hotel staff who deal directly with customers, other than the front desk, work at their own leisure. It is difficult to get their attention and to get service, specifically in the coffee shop. I normally tip generously but limited my tipping after I saw no improvement in service. On a bright side, staff who do not deal directly with customers, such as gardeners, were extremely friendly. The entertainment staff at the beach and pool were high energy and very entertaining. Evening bar entertainment, scheduled for each night was only available two of the seven days we were there. Mosquitoes and bugs were horrible. Obviously there is no insect control. We had to close a blanket into our room door to seal it from mosquitoes at night. We learned this the hard way after the first evening. Other problems we faced were: No hot water to take a shower on some days. On other days, hot water was only available late in the day. Most places were not cleaned, including room floors and bathrooms and near the pool. The pool was washed once during the seven days of our visit. The food was well below what I would expect, even for Cuba. There was little difference in the limited food choices for every meal. Lunch and dinner options were the same every single day. Do yourself a favour. Avoid going here. I find that when we select a resort in Cuba, we normally only go to resorts where we know someone who has already been there. Someone is less likely to give a favourable review if you are acquainted with them and they know you are going to that same resort. In this case we did not do that.

We stayed here March 1st for 10 days We have been to Varadero 10 times before, so we know the resorts well. For us, this hotel was below average. This has nothing to do with the staff - who generally are good ( with the possible exception of dinner staff at the buffet) . Maybe the place was too full, but service was less than desirable there. Running out of red wine / white wine and beer for several days in a row is inexcusable at an all-inclusive resort. We had 4-5 days straight where no red or white wine was available anywhere. We also had no beer anywhere in the resort for 2 days - and no beer in our mini-bar for most days. Someone claimed that this shortage was everywhere in Varadero, but people we spoke to on our excursion to Havana stated that their hotels had no problems. Our other main complaint was cold food at the buffet. Most of the food in the 'heated' trays was not hot at all. The only thing worse than cold food is warm beer :-). As the resort was packed, lineups for pasta and the grilled meats were long. So we decided to eat as many times as possible at the a la carte restaurants, which were pretty good overall. The beach was very crowded. As people have said, 7:00 AM is the time to get shade at the beach - and there clearly is a lack of beach chairs. We have been to resorts where all beach huts (palapas) were taken - but there were usually free chairs at least. As others have stated, many beach chairs in need of replacement. The beach is also very 'narrow' which adds to a cramped feeling on the beach. We found our room to be fine although a bit dingy. AC worked well as did the shower. We always make a point of bringing clothes and toiletries for the locals. These people do not have the same liuxuries that we do. They are in need and are genuinely appreciative of gifts. So try to think about these people and bring any old clothes that are in good shape that you no longer wear. Many other small issues that should not happen at a resort that claims to be a 5 star resort ( and yes - we know that a Cuba 5-star is not really a 5-star) We happened to be located close to the disco, and a few nights we were awaken by pumping music that ended at 2:00 AM. Restrooms frequently with no soap to wash hands. A la carte restaurants had extensive wine lists, but 3/4 of the wines were not available - another shortage issue. Cold fries offered at breakfast - but not at dinner - pretty strange. Really watered down coffee at buffet, but there is a separate coffee shop that is way better. Weird resort layout - only a single access to the beach - and you cannot go from the pool to the beach directly. The main lobby bar was usually packed and it was sometimes hard to get a drink. Overall - simply too many issues - so 3 stars it is.

Stayed at the resort for a week, enjoyed it very much. Lots of options for food, Italian, Chinese and traditional Cuban. Shows every night, music at the amazing pool and down by the beach. Staff was very polite and understood English. Definitely would come again.
