    Thin windows and slamming doors.

I booked the room over the phone explaining that I need a quiet room. I was promised, so I booked. When arrived to the room discovered that an old fashioned air conditioning unit was making a loud almost singing noise, and a giant fan/ventilator on the roof in front of the window was very loud. Moved to another room on the fifth floor facing the side street. The windows in the room were very thin. I could hear people talking and laughing on the street. There were no heavy curtains to block it. Window treatments were cheap plastic roll-ups and partially malfunctioning. The doors don't close - they slam! All day long, especially in the morning when housekeepers come to the corridor and you hear - slam, slam, slam - that is how the doors are designed. I couldn't rest at all. The food in the restaurant and room service was the only disappointment from all the food I eat in Victoria. They play a loud band with acoustic guitar and drums at the restaurant on the first floor of the hotel. Even in the sauna I couldn't relax at midnight listening to the speaker on the ceiling, with pop songs beating into my brain. There is no class in this hotel. This is supposed to be an Empress, not Elvis Presley Fairmont. Very disappointed.

    Could do better

Arrived in a taxi and stopped just past the bellman station. As the taxi driver was pulling out our luggage, the bellmen seemed to be bemused with this entertainment and did not offer to help. We pulled our luggage past their station and went to check-in. At Reception, an indoor bellman offered to help but since we already did the hard part, declined. The check-in took longer than expected since we were the only ones in line but they only had one person doing the check-in. Fine. We were on the 7th floor and the Receptionist showed us where the elevators were. We are now on the elevators and they only go to 6. Now we are going up and others come on so we go for a little ride. At ground floor, we decide to get out and ask an employee.... how do we get to the 7th floor. So we have to get off at 6, go down a long hallway where there is a small elevator that goes to 3 floors. It would have been helpful if Reception gave us this little bit of information. Our room is a City-View but roof-top view and backs of other buildings would be more accurate. So our initial impression is not good. The room is a good size, the bathroom is small. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. We stayed 3 days but did not use the spa/gym so can't comment on those. We did go for High Tea and were very disappointed by other attendees dressed in short, t-shirts and flipflops. Not sure I can lay this on the hotel but maybe a modicum of a dress code would be in order? The Tea was very enjoyable. In the lounge I ordered a gin and tonic and the server asked if I wanted Empress gin. I said no. She then said, it is only $2 more. I told her no thank you. So that was kind of weird. There is a lobby dog Winston who is a real delight. All hotels should have some sort of animal prowling the lobby. So, I was disappointed in how we were received. The hotel was as expected. Nothing terrible and no surprises. The service looks like it should be excellent but not quite right. If you stay here, try to get a harbour view.

Don't let them put you in the Tower....there is no ambiance there. If you are a dog lover, ask them to let you walk Winston....or maybe he will walk you. Staff is great, lovely grounds and atmosphere, but overpriced.
