    A gorgeous home away from home

    We had previously stayed in a tower room at the Royal Lahaina in 2016 and loved it, but for this trip we had 3 adults instead of 2 so wanted a larger room with 2 queen beds instead of doubles; the Kaanapali Ocean Inn was one of the only (if not the only) resort in the area to offer that. Plus, at the prices they charge we could afford an oceanfront view which we enjoyed every day! It isn’t a fancy 5 star hotel so don’t expect it. Rather, it was like staying in a gorgeous little beach house. We stayed at 4 different resorts during our Hawaiian vacation and while it was probably the least fancy, it was definitely the most comfortable! Yes, a few areas of the room could do with a bit of paint, but it was clean and comfortable with a cute beach theme and we loved every second of it. There were 4 distinct areas of the room: - A small bathroom with just a toilet and shower (but what else do you need?!). - A powder room area with a sink, heaps of counter space and a giant mirror (perfect for 3 women!) and the wardrobe and some drawers (great for keeping toiletries in as well as your underwear so you could dress in private). - The bedroom which had another giant mirror, a kitchen sink, 2 queen beds, more drawers and a large table with 2 chairs. - The lanai (balcony) with 2 rocking chairs and a small table. The room also had a Keurig coffee machine and a mini fridge (that was much larger than expected) so we were able to do a lot of our own meals and drinks. As a lot of reviews have stated, you can hear (and even see from the stairs!) the luau, but it really didn’t bother us; it finishes fairly early and it was kind of fun to listen to it while getting ready in the early evening. As a guest of the KOI you are treated exactly the same as a guest of the Royal Lahaina - you can use all the same facilities, charge food and drink to your room, get room service, etc. The resort has a lovely, laid back restaurant (you must try the fish burger and sweet potato fries!) and amazing cocktails, including a fantastic happy hour from 2pm to 5pm. The store has plenty of souvenirs and food items. We also used the fitness centre a lot which was small but effective. It was a short walk to the main part of the resort - closer than a lot of the cottages and probably faster than waiting for the elevator a lot of the time! There is no resort fee at either the KOI or RLR, despite the fact that they have so many extras not offered at other resorts, including pineapple water in the lobby, lots of filtered water stations (a new addition that was much appreciated!), live music and even free fruit at the beach activities/towel hut. It is extremely easy to get around the local area, even without a car. There is a free trolley to neighbouring resorts (many of which are also within walking distance) and Whalers Village and a $3 bus into Lahaina. The RLR and KOI are on, in my opinion, the nicest stretch of Kaanapali beach with beautiful sand, lovely warm waters and plenty of space. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous (I think they have done a lot of work in the last 3 years) with stunning tropical plants and flowers - you can’t walk a few feet without finding plumeria or hibiscus! We absolutely loved our time at KOI and RLR and will definitely be back again!

    Loved the moment we checked in. Felt like paradise, location was great and had everything you need and want within the Royal Lahaina Resort. The only problem I did have was the lack of a microwave! Bought food for my young daughters the night before and could not heat it up the next day. Not even a communal microwave within this beautiful resort -- frustrating since my daughters were both under 4 years old. Aside from that everything else as great.

    Sometimes you need to know whom to trust. The staff at the Inn gave me pointers on nice and comfortable places to eat, off the beaten path. It is a great place to wind down and listen to the soft rain in the afternoon. Love the place

    I booked here to celebrate my wife's birthday. Upon arrival the room we were given was humid, and smelled "old" and of mildew. I immediately went to the front desk and advised them of the issues. They moved me to another room which didn't smell as bad but still had many many issues. This room had holes in the walls, stained carpets, wallpaper peeling off the walls. Visible black mold along the roof in the room, shower roof and shower walls and along the AC vents. This time I called my travel agent which got in contact with the hotel and got me a fill refund once I returned the keys and towle vouchers. While I what's on hold with my travel agent I was able to book a room for my stay at the Westin we just checked in and we're extremely happy I'll post a review on the Westin later.

    Had an ocean-front room on the 3rd floor just steps from the beach. The view was worth much more than we paid. The room was clean and comfortable, but the shower is very small. As others have noted, it's an older hotel that could use some TLC. It seems like some paint could help the entire Royal Lahania property. It's a great location and a good value when you consider you get all the amenities of the RLR... just don't expect the Ritz. You're not paying for it.
