Beautiful - but things to know

We stayed here at the tail of our Costa Rica trip having spent time in two other resorts (Peace Lodge and Springs) in other parts of the country. There were seven of us including our family of five. The resort was beautiful in appearance and it’s an amazing place—however there are many things that may be helpful to know when traveling to here that I didn’t fully get until I got here. Construction: going on just below the lobby so it’s super loud at check in. I think it’s around the tapas restaurant, but am not certain since we didn’t go that way given the construction. Rooms: the bathroom has no privacy. There’s no lock on the stall door; nor does it fully close. Same for the shower - it’s beautiful but this room type set up isn’t ideal for families or even teens and siblings sharing their own room. Resort set up: the better view rooms are actually farther away from everything - pool and food - like 20-30 steps down a steep hill. We actually chose to get rooms with less view to be closer to things. You can call for a golf cart if you prefer, but we like walking on vacation, just not as much to do stairs. Similarly to get to the beach from the pool is around 20-30 more winding stairs. Service: it’s good and people are friendly, but they do take longer than other places we had encountered on our trip. Also they forgot us one time in terms of pick up - we got the golf cart tram back from the beach club but the van shuttle never came to get us to take us the rest of the way until many people called for us on our behalf. Location: beautiful pavered peninsula, however everything is fairly far away - even to get to the four seasons and beach club for dinner is over a 10 minute drive. It is fairly close to the airport, which is nice after so many long drives all over Costa Rica. Positives: the pools are beautiful and not too crowded; breakfast buffet was great and who doesn’t love monkeys around for breakfast time - so cute. Rooms are modern and the views are great.

    Amazing Family Fun

I was highly doubtful, with all the positive reviews. At one I point, I thought the good reviews got compensated. It certainly was not the case. We traveled with a 3 and 4 year old, stayed for week. Prior to my families arrival, I emailed Adam requesting celebration for my 3 year old daughter's birthday. Although there was no response to email, he certainly came through on the request. A team is only as strong as it's weakest link, I did not see any weak link with his team of staff's. They certainly personify the pura vida life style. We had Carlos in Rio Bongo, go out the way to assure, we had a good time and so does rest of the staff. The ladies in Cambi kids club are stellar, they kept my girls who, are full of energy very busy and entertained. The view from the room was amazing, we got to see monkeys, iguanas and sea turtle. we spend our morning in the beach house, it so serene, with a lot shade and many free activities to do. I had my first paddle board experience and it was great. I waited a few weeks to write this review, just to see if I had a change a heart or realize con about this trip. As other reviews wrote, it is expensive but you can adjust the days you stay and along with activities you do. There other sight seeing activities that can all add up. Overall, I have been to many resort and vacations, this place has set bar high.

    Spectacular but isolated

This was an amazing resort with delightful staff, well-appointed rooms, beautiful pools, well-maintained gardens, great on-site classes and just about any -- really, any -- amenity you could want. We had made special arrangements with National to drop off our rental car at the hotel. But there was no on-site “agency.” Instead, the valets cleaned and returned our vehicle, with zero effort on our part. The following day, our child had a sudden, severe ear infection that was handled quickly by the resident doctor, who offered services at no charge during normal business hours. Medication was delivered from a pharmacy in Liberia at a steep (but fair) markup, given that delivery required a 40-minute drive each way. I can’t emphasize enough how that saved us a huge hassle and expense. The rooms are modern and well-appointed, with extremely comfortable beds. The outer wall is glass, offering spectacular forest or ocean views from your bed, shower, or lanai. Interior doors to the toilet and shower are glass and offer little privacy, so best for romantic couples. We were grateful our teens had their own room. Located hillside, plan on some steep, long walks, or call for a cart. The food is good overall though pricey with service and taxes bumping up the bottom line quickly. With few options outside the resort (save the “Dive Bar”), plan on $100 per person per day or do the math to see if the all-inclusive option makes more sense. Bottom line, this is a fabulous self-contained getaway, but it is an isolated resort far from anything else. We loved having breakfast with Capuchins trying to steal food (even if they were a nuisance to the staff). The infinity pools were small but lovely and not too crowded during our green season visit. The small mangrove beach with snorkels, paddleboards and kayaks was nice for a quick visit, but I couldn’t imagine spending much time there. We did not explore the Andaz Beach House due to limited time. My coffee-nerd husband was thrilled with the barista class. And despite tending to a sick kiddo, we had a wonderful time. Fair warning: most guests were English-speaking/American and the staff primarily spoke English (even when we spoke Spanish). While I recommend the resort to those seeking solitude and a cloistered retreat, it is a microscopic, sanitized version of Costa Rica. Go, enjoy, but schedule extra time to venture out and truly experience puravida.

The Andaz was paradise. You get a beautiful room with a balcony and very clean. The staff treats you like royalty. They did everything to accommodate us and make it the best hotel vacation we’ve ever had.

Its an amazingly beautiful property, but the staff is just weird.. I cant really explain it but it was like they were really fake in their niceness.. Also there is basically a 25 percent upcharge on everything. Even when they told me tax and service is included they would add it as an additional line item. Transportation to the airport is forced rate at 70.00.
