    Typical all-inclusive

We visited the Westin for the tail-end of our anniversary trip to Costa Rica. We don't often stay in all-inclusive resorts because we tend to prefer to explore other places without the touristy aspect of a resort environment, however before we went back to Chicago, we want a few days to just relax and not have to think about anything at all. So, we booked a few nights here. The resort is a typical all-inclusive. We stayed in the adults-only Royal Beach Club, but also ventured out in the other parts of the resort. When we arrived, our dinner reservations had all been arranged for us because apparently everything would have been booked already otherwise. That seemed a little odd to us, considering that they had half the restaurants closed and the ones we did go to were never near capacity. It was pretty nice to not have to remember to make reservations, but I would have liked a little more say in where we ate each night I think. Our room was a standard size hotel room. The bed was very comfortable. The area that we were in was quiet at night, so we got good rest. There were animals all around us, and that was awesome. From the monkeys to the bearded dragons, it was neat to be surrounded by wildlife that we don't really see up in the Midwest. The service at check in and at the French restaurant was sort of blah. We had to wait awhile for our room to be ready upon check in. However outside of those two experiences, the hotel staff was really lovely. Our dinner at the Latin fusion restaurant was awesome - the empanadas were delicious!! Most of our time was spent by the Royal Beach Club pool. It was nice - good service, and a nice kid-free area. In general, the resort is starting to show some signs of age and could use some upgrades. They were measuring to put in a new bar surface as we were getting ready to leave, so I'm sure that will be nice. The chairs by the pool should probably be replaced soon. Everything was clean and well maintained, just ready to be spruced up a bit here and there. Overall, we did enjoy our time at the Westin and are glad we had a few days to enjoy it before heading home. If you like all-inclusive resorts, this one is nice and we had a pretty good experience!

My husband and I stayed at this resort 6 years ago for our honeymoon and we loved it so much, it only made sense to return for my 40th birthday celebration with 10 family members and friends. We just got back from an 8 day stay and had a wonderful time. It's the perfect blend of nothing to do and always something to do for our speed. The staff of the hotel are so helpful and genuinely care about your experience, which really shows. We spent pretty much every day on the beach and in the pool, and spent evenings enjoying their resort entertainment shows and dancing at the resort Bar Imperial. We also booked multiple excursions through Erik Garcia (who we used last time we came and who can be found on Trip Advisor). With Erik's help we were able to go shopping in Tamarindo, deep sea fishing, ATV riding and on the river boat ride with crocodiles, monkeys & birds. A great time was had by all - ranging in age from 30 to 75 - and the resort was big enough that we could all sort of do our own thing, but small enough that we were all also able to spend time together. Unfortunately, the majority of onsite restaurants and the main pool was closed during our stay, but they've done a good job of switching up menus at the restaurants that are open, so we never felt bored with our food selections - every meal we ate was quite good (actually much better food quality than we even remembered from our last stay). As a note, I would definitely recommend working with the group booking team if you're traveling with any quantity of people - Tri Castillo was a total pleasure to work with and really made sure our group was made to feel important and any issues rapidly addressed or corrected. We plan to return again (next time with our kids lol) and I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone and any type of trip - there really is something for everyone.

First of all, the rating is 3/5 instead of more because we went when the hotel was undergoing renovation. Even though this was brought to our attention when booking through Costco and the price was a little discounted, the details of the limitation were mis-represented and not available on the hotel website and until check-in. The biggest disappointment was that only a couple of restaurants and buffets were open during the entire week which made dining get boring very soon. Access to the royal beach club pool was a saving grace and we did not miss the main pool. The staff was excellent and so was the food and drinks quality. We had read mixed recommendations about tiping and quickly found that it was far from being the norm in the restaurants and bar and sometimes felt akward so we were happy to put that aside and only tip couple of dollars for room service. Don't let the rainy season discourage you from coming in October since most days were dry and we only got a few days with rain or thunderstorms in afternoon or evening and there was no crowding anywhere during our stay. The coatis, iguanas, howler monkeys and other flora and fauna only added to the fun but there are mosquitoes too so nice to pack some repellant. The hotel staff seemed glad to arrange beach chairs outside their beach gates and access to drinks was easy. Horse back riding and water scooters activities can be purchased from the vendors at the beach who are gracefully non-pushy. We did use a guy at the beach (Aaron since the more popular Erik was absent) to plan our excursion but later found that Costco's Destination Services would have been cheaper and probably better organized. Also the beach guys big markup if paying by credit card instead of cash seemed shady. So better to do some shopping around before booking excursions. All in all it is a beautiful country and people.

The price was very high, but you get what you pay for. The resort was amazing with great food. We tried to venture outside of the hotel to do activities, and it was not centrally located to anything, but I don't think anything is in Costa Rica. I would stay here again for a very relaxing vacation.
