A peaceful oasis in NYC

Stayed at Westin for 4 nights from 28/2/24 with Virgin Holidays. From JFK we used the Airtrain (contactless $8) and LIRR ( $5 from machine which takes cash and card) Really easy. Helpful staff in Jamaica station on machines. Walked from Penn station about 15 minutes up 8th Avenue. Took about 1 hour from airport to hotel. Better than minibus transfers we have used previously. We were greeted on entering reception area by very pleasant young man who welcomed us to hotel with bottle of cold water which was very welcome after walk from station! Check in was quick. $150 deposit taken off card which was refunded on departure. We did not have the Virgin room upgrade due to requesting a low floor. We had free premium WiFi with Virgin which worked well. Virgin holidays paid resort fees and we received $20 per day food and beverage credit from Virgin on top of $30 from hotel. Vanessa on reception was adamant that the Virgin credit was per stay but it is per night. $50 a day sounds a lot but it didn’t go far though. Only options for breakfast were buffet at $50 each or room service. Room service worked well. Order on phone and gives you cost clear. There are a lot of taxes and tips. To give you an idea, we had avocado on toast every day for two people. That was $50 per day. Very expensive but it was delicious and nicely presented. Our room was on 18th floor looking down on 8th Avenue and views of Hudson in distance. Had opening window but we kept closed. Street/traffic noise bearable except for road works one night. Bathroom had everything you needed and hot water plentiful. No robes as advertised though. Large room with two very comfortable double beds, plenty of storage, alarm clock, large tv, large wardrobe, hairdryer, ironing board, free safe and coffee maker. Two bottles of water per day. They did not replenish tea for some reason but we got some from reception. We were very comfortable. Beds lovely. We could control temperature. Lifts were fast and efficient. We only had a long wait for lift one night when group of school children staying. Great location. Minutes from theatres. Subway station, various fast food outlets, bakery, cinema, 7-Eleven and even Target (Tesco) underneath hotel. Port authority bus station across road if you want to go to Jersey Gardens shopping. 15 minutes walk to Macy’s, Rockefeller, Central Park and river. You can access hotel through cinema on 42nd street which was useful and we used this many times as escalator was out of order on main entrance during our stay. Reception is on first floor. On departure day we had late checkout to 1 pm and we were able to store our bags. Included in the resort fees you could have one ticket per night to the American history museum, river cruise or one observatory. We opted for river cruise. Unfortunately John booked us on wrong day so we had a wasted journey and had to go another day which ruined our schedule. The walk to boat took 15 minutes and Cruise was really good. We wanted to go to museum or observatory but he would only give us another one ticket despite staying for four nights! Gave up with him! Overall it was a pleasant place to stay and felt clean and safe. Staff were really nice and helpful and it was a lovely place to come back to late at night after theatre shows. Not as luxurious as I expected given price but very comfortable. Would I stay again? Yes. Just be aware that staff on reception need to be reminded of Virgin benefits/upgrades as this can be stressful. Hope this is helpful to people thinking of going from U.K. with Virgin holidays.
Outstanding

My recent stay 3/11-3/12 was met with outstanding curbside service who made it easy to navigate the hotel process. Front desk was pleasant and very helpful. The room was immaculate and very comfortable (26th floor). The Foundry restaurant was delicious and the staff very accommodating, in particular a server named Augusto (Goose) whose smile could light up the room and attentiveness was very much appreciated. Thank you to all.
