La Boheme, Luis Poxtan server

Katrina O (Tonawanda, New York) on Apr 20, 2024

Dinner tonight at La Boheme, Luis Poxtan was our server, he was wonderful and very attentive. We will return this visit. Thank you for a special night. Excellent espresso martini and French onion soup. My husband and I both had the steak and shrimp, would recommend.

Hi all. Just a little overview of our recent 10days at TRS, flew from the UK with TUI Premium from Birmingham. This is our view, non biased and obviously subjective as we all have different opinions/views on what we all like dislike etc etc... Flying with TUI who we said we'd never use again was pretty damn faultless. Premium is great for the extra seat space and service rec'd onboard. Made the 10hrs fly by, no pun intended. At Cancun airport, we were qkly thru passport control, approx 10mins but waited approx 45-60mins for the cases to come thru so that was a pain. They were in the first few off though as Premium gets your cases off first. Got lucky with pressing the green/red button at customs as we got a green light where as those in front got the dreaded red. Out of the building and walked up to the TUI reps near the end of the path where the coaches park up, waited just shy of 10mins for the Premium private transfer to TRS. Took us less than 1hr with our wannabe F1 driver we had, to get to TRS. Check in was fluid although no cold drink was offered, no biggee, but it would've been nice. Offered the Premium upgrade but we declined and there was no pressure at all once we did decline. Stayed in building 65, 6514 poolside junior suite I think it's called, right behind Helios/Infinity Pool so that was perfect. 1st floor room with zero musty/damp problems with great AC. Overlooked the path/road with a decent balcony that we couldn't make use of as the sun was frying it late on in the afternoon. We prefer a balcony without sun late in the day so we can sit out and chill/drink/play cards etc... Drinks via the ebutler were there, asked for additional coat hangers and got them within minutes. Pointed out we don't drink beer and to swap out for Pepsi/7 UP which was also not an issue. Shower was lovely, powerful and plenty of hot water, rather tall toilet seating position though ?? We ate at Helios for breakfast daily, superb choices with great service from Martha, Alain, Jesus and Guadalupe. Ate here also on our 1st night as we did try La Dalia which we thought was rather grim in terms of picked over/dry food buffet. Helios was lovely though. El Gaucho we didn't enjoy, extremely fatty Rib Eye for me where I could only eat a couple of morsels of meat that wasn't fat. Short Ribs for my wife were 'ok' but not great. El Dorado on the Colonial side is wayyy better if you want a beef fillet, you just need ear muffs for the constant noise from the family packed restaurant that it caters to. La Boheme was lovely as was Tentazione as we ate here twice. The flambe' of the Panna Cotta was a superb spectacle. Capricho for lunch was lovely but as it's a la carte, it's a wait for your food so we stuck with Helios daily. Tepanyaki at Sumptouri was a good laugh as it's a social experience. Shrimp and chicken were nice but the beef was slightly chewy but overall, a good meal. Tried the Mexican at Capricho, book this as soon as you arrive as it's Sunday only, unfortunately, we didn't even get to order as my wife wasn't well so we left within minutes so we can't comment on the food. We got a decent deal on Chic/Bravo as a package at $149 or £120 for both and we must say, Chic is a must as the show was brilliant for the full 3hrs, nonstop entertainment with great food served up during the many taster courses they serve up. Bravo though, not for us in terms of food as it was pretty poor despite being presented lovely. My beef cheek was just a plate of fat, very grim. My wife's lamb though was nice she said. The show itself was ok, singing and dancing but on a lot lower lever than Chic. I'd say just stick with Chic but again, that's our preference/view of both. Great Infinity Pool service but you have to have gritted teeth when you're laid out enjoying the sun and the next bed pops up a brolly and then blocks your sun as the sun moves round. The same brolly left up all day despite the beds being used lightly as they were either in the pool or away eating lunch. I did drop said brolly down when it was left for some time. Again, not an issue as people like shade so be prepared for this. Beds readily available up until 11am and then it was more difficult to get a decent spot. One point to note though was the lack of premium drinks as the 10days went past, both bars ran out of Grey Goose, Havana, Bacardi White on the Saturday/Sunday and by the time we left on the following Wed, none of these drinks were replaced to the annoyance of many pool guests. That's bad imo and when I asked about the Havana, I was just told they didn't have it and try the other bar, no idea of when either bar would be replenished but 5day+ without popular drinks is poor. We also found the mixers from the pumps to be tasteless/flat at times so ended up ordering drinks with ice and separate cans of Pepsi/7 Up and mixed our own which was wayyy better. Towels were always available despite us reading they were in short supply at times. The pool does get lively at times but it's a 'good friendly' lively atmosphere though and a bit of a laugh at times. Great singers/DJ during the afternoons which was nice to chill and drink to. Overall we enjoyed our break at TRS and the staff make this place what it is, the food though, very hit n miss at times at the A La Carte restaurants. Luke warm veg and little of it springs to mind. The grounds and overall appearance of the entire site is immaculate though and is lovely to view/walk around. We normally go to Excellence further up the coast but they have priced themselves out at present, hence why we came to TRS. Would we rtn, probably not as it's not to Excellence standards in terms of food and drink for us. Again, that's just us and everybody has differing tastes etc....so it's not a slant on TRS at all. We just think it could be superb with the odd tweek in terms of food consistency. BTW, if you fly TUI Premium, make sure they tag your cases up at Cancun airport as you leave as we waited an age for our cases once we landed back at BHX as there were no Premium labels on them, maybe leave the tags on that were applied as you left the UK?
