First and foremost I have to say the staff that work there were very helpful and tried their best to make the hotel more comfortable for us but alot of the issues we experienced were above their pay grade. The issues we experienced were as follows: 1. The hotel is very dated and needs a serious revamp; there's no fridge in the rooms, kettle or bulb in the ceiling just lamps and socket in the bathroom. 2. The rooms often plays home to pesky cockroaches, lizards and geckos. 3. Security at the entrance is almost lacking so you don't even really feel safe. 4. Breakfast included in the deal isn't nice (stale bread, muffin and watermelon) you're better off paying for breakfast elsewhere 5. The staff weren't clued up on cab drivers (for some reason) and my friend and I ended up in an unlicenced cab. 6. Wi-fi only works in the lobby for some reason you'll be lucky if it works in your room. 7. The toliet wouldn't flush and the bath water was slow to go down the drain. 8. I found a dead spider in my towel. 9. Keys were very tempramental so often stopped working. 10. Hotel made claims they have rooms with balconies which isn't true. Be mindful if you go there to only stay on a short term basis i.e. just to visit someone.

I read the reviews before coming so my expectations were set low. It’s what I expected. If you plan to be out most of the time and are only going for a couple days it’s ok. I wouldn’t plan a week long vacation here. It’s run down (needs a paint job, dirty grout on tub, new shower curtains needed etc etc) but for the most part the staff did a good job in trying to keep the place clean. It feels more like a motel than hotel. No frills here. Lots of potential for the property as it really is an ideal location. From what I heard, the hotel is owned by the same people who own the fancy Moon Palace next door. Apparently it was sold by the government for steal so there has been some controversy re: the sale which is apparently under investigation. So for now the owners are not spending any money to repair it until the investigation is complete. I don’t know how true this is but it makes sense to me since some of the upgrades seem like simple fixes. It’s fine if you want a place to lay your head at night but not if you plan to spend any time relaxing in your room. Staff is nice enough if you’re nice to them but there’s a general air of complacency.

    Gone downhill since last visit

I lasted visited this hotel about 13 years ago and I can honestly say that since this time – NOTHING has been changed. The rooms are outdated, smelly, musty and require updating. The A/C in the room is either cold or cold and it can not really be improved, the TV has so many pixel’s it reminds me of the old black and white TV’s that you had to turn the knob to change channel. As for the ‘Continental’ breakfast it was awful. It was two slices of bread, some butter, a small pot of jam, some tinned pineapple and a little muffin! – I purchased some bacon for J$400 and it tasted like it had been reheated in dirty oil and was rubbery! WI FI only works at reception – unless you are lucky enough to have a room above reception then you can pick up WIFI. Staff (other than Indra after a few conversations, and a bar man) were miserable, unhappy and just pure lazy – unless you were white American and likely to tip then they very quickly found the energy to do anything that was wanted! One bar man told me he had no ice and I could go to the third floor to get some, especially as I am fat! Although the kitchen is on the ground floor. I asked someone else for water at about half 9 in the evening and he told me the kitchen was closed?!?! One morning we were told there is no juice as the person went home with the key to the fridge so they could not give you the small glass of watered down juice with your two slices of bread. Lifeguard spent more time guarding the towels in the corner then he did at the pool and told my nephew he could not go in the water because he was not insured as he was only a visitor to the hotel?!?!? Hotel was so bad I checked out 5 days early and paid more for another hotel rather than stay in this place. Considering how beautiful Jamaica is this hotel is an embarrassment – there are way better hotels and service in Ocho than this place. On a positive – the hotel location is very good, and there are lots of places to eat and to go out along Main Street just outside, although the beach staff wont let you walk through the beach to get to the hotel and make you walk 20 minutes on the main road instead! I will never stay here again as it seems they have no respect for their guests, two slices of bread for breakfast?!?!? REALLY

The hotel is basic, has what you need. You pretty much get what you pay for as it is quite simplistic. Breakfast is crap unless you purchase food, you can get Jamaican breakfast which was nice, but it will add up if you buy it every day. The pool is basic. Its on a beach which everybody and anybody is on. The local men will try and friend you up to get you to buy them a day pass. Don't let them take you for fool. Bathroom wasn't the nicest. On my third night there when I went out my room was broken into. My suitcase was sliced open and all my belongings (except my clothes) were stolen. This included my passport, money, cards, watch, handbag, sunglasses, alcohol EVERYTING!! They teef me up big time. The hotel staff didn't really care (other than one of the staff Miss Murray who works for the security team) the rest didn't give a damn, probably because they were in on it. Somehow people got into my room (hotel staff said we left the balcony door open but I know it wasn't open) and took all my stuff. Couldn't even offer a complimentary meal or something despite the fact I was scared to leave for two days. The place is not secure. Anyone can jump over or somehow find their way onto the premises. If you do stay here definitely do NOT stay on the ground floor as then they'll try and blame you for leaving the door open if something happens to your belongings. I would NEVER stay here again. Staff couldn't even look me in the face after what happened to me. Disgraceful to be robbed by my own people, I may be born in Britain but my whole bloodline born in Jamaica and its a disgrace that these things happen. My advice would be pay extra money and stay somewhere more secure.

    Pick somewhere else!

Beautiful view of the ocean from the 3rd floor. While looking through sliding glass doors that do not lock: 1 lock was broken in half, and the other lock was removed. The evening maintenance worker stormed out of my room with the door open, as if I was unreasonable for wanting my family to be as safe as possible or placed in another room. It seems like the room was burglarized before since the safe had a hole in it too. So, I asked the spiteful, lazy front desk female about it, she said I would have to leave a $20 USD deposit for something to put in the hole. Hummm! If the safe had been broken into, then I'd lose that deposit too. SMH! Plus, the Wi-Fi didn't work in Room 1305. That front desk person claimed it only worked in the common areas. However, the Wi-Fi worked in other people's rooms on each floor. Hummm? Posted pic of the peeling tub. Moved to a parking lot side room. Only one sliding glass door lock was broken. Used a stick to secure it. The security latch was broken. We were able to barricade ourselves in for the night. Wi-Fi worked. The tub didn't peel as much as pic. Still recommend shoes be worn. The best thing about staying at Rooms on the beach is the location. Make plans to eat at Shakru Express or some place outside of the hotel's restaurant. They're not interested in making a meal kid-palatable. To have one nice 3+ foot/1 meter shallow pool and the beach to use are splendid. It was odd that complimentary shampoo was not available. No fridge in the room.
