Very disappointing day at the pool. After arriving at the hotel, very smooth check in, we went directly to the pool as we are only here for two days. There were two obviously very intoxicated young men who had a speaker that was playing music. The music was fine, just very loud. The security guard asked them to turn it down, at our request through another staff member. He asked once then had to return as they were being belligerent. The one young man kept falling then the other picked him up and threw him in the pool! We were watching him to make sure he didn't drown then he got caught in the rope. He wasn't able to keep above water and started to go under. His friend was alerted by another guest and he pulled him out as he was vomiting in the pool. We alerted staff and 911 was called. Was disappoints me is we didn't get a chance to use the pool because security didn't do his job. Obviously they were intoxicated and they didn't remove them and we were not able to use the pool as he had vomited in the pool. They didn't even clean up the vomit on the deck very disappointing. I feel we should be compensated for our loss time at the pool because if security had been doing their job we wouldn't have had to deal with this totally disturbing situation and loss time at the pool on our 2 day stay.

Ok - but tired and showing some wear and age.

Charged me an extra $60/night for a poolside room. Neglected to tell me that the pool "patio" was really a walking path, behind an iron fence and lacked any privacy. Parking is an additional $15/night. There is nothing wrong, per se, but it could be so much better. Some rooms face the freeway and would be far too noisy.

We stayed here at the Handlery on Hotel Circle North for our three day visit to San Diego thru a Travelzoo package deal. For $99 a night (plus tax and fees of course), we had a room, reduced parking charge ($5 instead of the usual $15) and daily breakfast. There were plusses and minuses with our stay there, and overall I'd say the positives outweighed the negatives, but not by much. The positives: *Great location. Quick access onto I-8 or for us, just a two minute drive to park at the Fashion Valley Trolley Green Line, which we used quite a bit to get around town. *The room, altho a bit smallish, was well insulated and quiet, which is saying something considering the hotel is situated virtually right on the super noisy I-8 *They provide free shuttle service to various tourist spots such as Old Town and other areas of interest. *The front desk personnel were always friendly and accomodating. *The parking is gated, so there is a sense of security with your vehicle being parked at the hotel. The negatives: *This is a large complex, with both the main building and several dormitory-style builds on the grounds as well. Our room was located in one of those, which made for a bit of a walk just to get to the restaurant or front desk. *The rooms, altho quiet, are super dated - as in complete with popcorn ceilings, a small closet, and an impossibly tiny bathroom - barely enough to accommodate one person. *We don't watch a lot of TV - usually a bit in the morning to catch the traffic and a little at night after our long day being tourists. But when we do watch, we like our TVs to be of at least decent quality and a good picture. There were a number of channels that were could not be viewed due to the poor reception and interference. *The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were straight out of the Motel 6 line. *The Travelzoo deal includes a made-to-order breakfast up to an $18 per person value. So when we dined in their small attached restaurant, we were expecting a menu with a variety of breakfast options. Instead, we had only three choices - a two egg breakfast, pancakes, or a fruit & yogurt plate. Each of those were worth maybe $6 tops, certainly not $18. And service was slow and never really all that friendly. All in all, I'd say the Travelzoo package barely made it worth it. If we had to pay normal full price, I would then say skip this place and find something more updated.

It was an enjoyable stay at the handlery. Their service was great, the room was comfortable, quiet and clean. I really enjoyed using the pool and eating at the restaurant. It was really accessible to go anywhere in town.
