First stay here and was impressed with the room (spacious and great view) and the historical nature of the hotel. Near the cable car lines and had very friendly and helpful staff Tried twice to get into the Tonga room, but always a 45 minute wait. Helpful concierge and front of the house staff. Clean and quiet room. Only downside is the need for a more upscale bar and restaurant. Would stay again..

    Go elsewhere for afternoon tea

Six of us went to afternoon tea at the Fairmont for a birthday celebration. When our tea did not appear 39 minutes after ordering, our waiter informed us that they were waiting for teapots to become available. The tepid tea finally arrived in teapots without any lids and two of the members of our party were told they had to share one teapot. The manager offered no explanation, simply smiled and robotically stated, "I know. It is all my fault." Very strange and surreal... Oh and the tea is not served with milk; we had to request it. It came chilled!!

A very impressive first impression that keeps on delivering. As you approach this hotel you sense the grandeur of a previous era. Then you land in the lobby and it's confirmed, this is a serious hotel from a bygone era. My room was very well decorated, incredibly clean and fantastic in every way. I had an internal courtyard room with a roof view of some internal function space. But don't worry, it was light, bright and airy. Don't be put-off by the internal description, save the $40 per night and book the internal view room. You'll feel fitter by the end of your SF stay as you climb the hills back to the Fairmont.

    First time at a Fairmont . . . Treated like a peasant!

I booked this hotel direct from their website at a steeply discounted rate, on a weeknight for a business trip to SF. To be fair, I had never stayed at a Fairmont before (or any Accor Hotel, for that matter, having been a Hyatt loyalist for many years) but knew of the brand's cachet and overall positive reputation. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed by the service and staff treatment almost as soon as I arrived. Upon pulling our rental car up to the front driveway, we were immediately greeted by a serious-faced valet who promptly notified us that we'd have to pay $74 or leave--certainly not the way an incoming guest should be treated! The "pay or go" mentality permeated our entire stay, as if all staff had been trained to nickel and dime new guests! Even the front desk lady who checked us in continued to pester me about "upgrades," attempting (in vain) to upsell us on "nicer, higher floored rooms for just $120/night" and other costly amenities. I would say the worst part was the room's "auto-debit" fridge, which somehow charges your room any time an item is moved. Yes, that's correct: We had to ask them to remove the inadvertent charges simply because we wanted to use the mini-fridge to store food! The only silver lining was that the hotel's decor is quite nice. They also gave us a "complimentary microwave" upon request--which they also reiterated they could "throw in for free as a courtesy, even though there is normally a charge for it." Our room, by the way, was just OK; we were happy with the relatively sound-proof walls, but the view of the street was rather unsightly. And to be honest, we were expecting much more from the bathroom amenities (what kind of four-star hotel uses 1/2-ply toilet paper)?! Overall, I would say the hotel is drastically overrated and not worth the price. My guess is they are hurting financially, hence the constant need to upsell and overcharge. I wouldn't recommend the place unless you have business (or pleasure) in the immediate vicinity.
