Best Holiday of My Life!

Katie W on Jan 17, 2025

I am writing this review of The Royal Decameron as other reviews on here do not show a true reflection of the hotel and it is such a shame. I flew on the 29th December to celebrate my 30th Birthday on New Years Eve and spent 2 weeks at The Royal Decameron and honestly there is not a single thing that I can find fault in at this hotel. Starting off the with the garden cottages, which were absolutely stunning, they were cleaned thoroughly each day. Our wonderful cleaner Tia, was super lovely and friendly and did a fantastic job of keeping our cottage fresh and clean. We had a single bed then a very comfortable queen size. The garden cottages are accessible, and we only had a 30 second walk to the beach. There was a small fridge in our room where bottled water was replenished each day. We also enjoyed the terrace at the front of our cottage to relax and have a few drinks. The food at the hotel was absolutely stunning, especially if you are a fan of Jamaican cuisine! Morning, noon and night, we never went hungry. Although we flew with TUI, we actually preferred the main restaurant for breakfast. I would highly recommend the soups, they were full of flavour and a jerk burger from the grill of an afternoon! A huge thank you to Angela, one of the chefs, for showing us how to make a stunning beef teriyaki stir fry too! I would also like to say a huge thank you to the beautiful Judy, a waitress in the main restaurant. She really made us feel special and set us beautiful tables each evening. She really made the effort to make us feel welcome and took care of us, it was very emotional having to say goodbye. Also, a big thank you to David, a waiter in the main restaurant, often on the breakfast shift, who always made sure we had a good brew in the morning! There are many reviews on here that are negative towards the staff at The Royal Decameron, and all I have to say is you reap what you sow. All staff are a credit to the hotel and absolutely made the holiday for me, a big shout out also to Odette, Marlon, Damien, Seabreeze and Troy. If you have any doubts about booking this hotel, please do not let the negative reviews put you off, you will have the time of your life there. The hotel is definitely more deserving of 3* in my opinion. This was the best holiday of my life and we are already looking to book again for later this year.

Horrible place

ericbC3391UQ on Jan 12, 2025

Let’s start with the good bits: location is ok, some staff were friendly, accommodating and helpful. Rooms cleaned daily and the grounds is ok, although grass was overgrown. The bad: almost everything. Rooms were substandard, paint flaking from the wall, horrible paint job, with drips of dried paints all over. Guard refused to let us on property until 3 pm-keep in mind that we booked from the UK- although we were in Jamaica for a few days earlier, luckily some of our family was already booked in days before so they came and met us. Some staff were extremely unprofessional, I literally had to part a quarrel between a staff and a patron. Most were unhelpful. For example, in the mornings, they offer cold milk for coffee which makes the coffee cold, several times I requested warm milk and was given various excuses why I couldn’t get it, except for one guy-forgot is name but he was helpful. Then there was the ugly: the food was absolutely disgusting. In addition you have to get there early to get servings of meats etc, which in most cases would not be replaced. I stayed at this hotel years before, including the one in Montego Bay and whilst it was budget friendly, I can’t remember it being horrible, so something must have gone badly wrong. From my observation the management of the hotel is extremely poor so it trickles down to most of the staff. Personally, unless this is the last hotel on earth, I would not return. Horrible place-stay far. We stayed in late December 2024, let on 30th.

Disappointing

Claudia T (Jamaica) on Jan 11, 2025

I stayed at Decameron Montego October 2024 and had the best time. So I thought the same level of service would be at Runaway Bay. Not so! The staff are very unpleasant for the most part. No smile, no customer service. Most times the buffet staff were gathered socializing with each other, leaving tables dirty and guests waiting for utensils. When you take your meal be prepared to have the flies watch your food as you go for your own drinks or hot beverage. Poor staff with no home or job training. One day I requested salt and pepper in my omelet and was sent for same from a table. The 'chef' said, they do not have at the station as staff use same to prepare their eggs instead of going to the kitchen. How convenient for paying guests. Strick to almost rude demeanor at the grill on Friday Jan. 10. 25 by one of the staff who served our food angrily. Grill was late to open that day and she was most rude communicating its not yet opened. Jasmine staff had guests in drizzle for minites before we were seated. We had to ask to come in basically. No care for guests. Food basic and bland at Jasmine. Nothing special. Pool towels were frequently out. Had to wait for hours sometimes for clean ones. I stayed 5 days and only had 2 meals that were good. Entertainment team and just a handful of staff seemed mannerable. Rooms were tiny but okay clean. Worn towels. Filthy mattress. Full of mildew and discoloured. Torn shower curtain with 6 different style rods. At one point it felt too much to point out so unfortunately just worked with it to make the best of our stay. You can't tell managers from staff as they all acted incompetent alike.

Terrible food and service

Serina P on Jan 09, 2025

I wanted to stay in a different parish in Jamaica and choose this resort as I was on a tight budget. I love the layout of the cottages and the bed was comfortable and that's the only thing I liked.. The food was gross and service was poor . We had to find cutlery, napkins and ask the wait staff for beverages . The food had zero taste and we both got sick from eating. The alcohol was the house brand and had zero taste so we ended up buying rum off the resort and brought it back to drink..I wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone. The beach was lovely but in the water was full of sharp rocks. You will need water shoes to swim here!

Disappointing

Katherine R on Jan 07, 2025

Awful would be an understatement. Please DO NOT stay here unless you want to be extremely disappointed. Upon arrival I had to wait 2 hours for my room to be ready and when I finally got in it was filled with ants and a broken lock. When I reported it there was no apology they just signposted the porter to take me to another room in which I declined the second room because of the size and layout was not equivalent to my original room. The 3rd room I took out of frustration was dated unkept which you can see from the pictures. The following day I was given my original room that had been sprayed and the lock fixed but still not great see the mould of the lampshade. The food at the hotel is unbelievable bad don’t expect any of the food to be warm or seasoned no matter day or time everything is cold. Overall the staff were not the most friendly and it was clear none of them wanted to be there, during my 3 days I didn’t receive a smile or greeting from any of the wait staff. Unfortunately I also became unwell on the holiday and had to beg to have a kettle or hot water in my room because I really could make it to the restaurant. The Snack bar was also closed and there was no alternative provided. The beach has a lot of rocks but one small positive the beach bar staff were friendly and attentive. The pool location is not the most inviting and the music is obnoxiously loud all day! Overall I would not recommend there are so many hotel in the area you really don’t need to waste your money here.
