Service Fees

There are quite a few service fees, and we want to make sure you understand them. This handy page outlines any fees that may come up when travelling as our guest.

The fee amounts show the minimum to maximum tax (0-18 per cent) payable, which may be applicable in some circumstances, unless otherwise noted, fees are shown in Canadian dollars. Please note, fees are generally charged in the currency of the reservation, however, in some cases they may also be charged in the currency of the country you're travelling to or from, and credit card exchange rates apply.

If you booked through a travel agent (online or directly), corporate travel arranger, or another airline please contact them directly.

Checked bag fees

Our bag fees have changed. View all previous price changes.

Prepay for bags and save. Guests are encouraged to prepay for their first and second checked bags online through Manage Trips at any time up to 24 hours before your flight as fees will increase by $10 through self-serve check-in, and a further $10 if paid at the airport with an agent.

Bag fees are charged in Canadian (CAD) or U.S. (USD) dollars, depending on the booking’s country of origin. For flights departing from outside Canada and the U.S., bag fees will be converted and charged in the local currency of the departure country. GST is charged on fees for all itineraries that originate in Canada.

Sports equipment handling fee:

When is your first bag free?

First bag fees are included for WestJet RBC® World Elite Mastercard‡ primary cardholders and up to 8 guests on the same booking.

First bag fees are also included for EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares and Silver, Gold and Platinum WestJet Rewards members.

Second bags are included for Premium and Business guests, as well as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Rewards members

Excess bags are included for Platinum Rewards members.

Prepay and save. Guests are encouraged to prepay for up to two checked bags on WestJet operated and marketed flights when you book online or any time before your flight through Manage Trips.

For an additional $10, checked bag fees may also be paid when you check-in online through our self-serve options. If you choose to pay for your checked bag with an agent at the airport counter, an additional $10 fee will apply. This $10 fee only applies to tickets purchased on or after November 7, 2023. Any guests with tickets purchased on November 6, 2023, or prior, can self-identify with an agent to avoid the $10 fee.

Bag fees are refundable in the event of a flight cancellation.

Bag fees are per direction, including taxes. GST is charged on all itineraries that originate in Canada.

Reimbursements

If a bag is lost, you'll be reimbursed for your baggage fee (not including excess valuation) in addition to settlement for the loss of bags.

Carry-on items help to make your trip more comfortable and convenient. We do our best to accommodate your carry-on allowance in the cabin, but acceptance of carry-on baggage is subject to space availability. If adequate space is not available, carry-on items will be placed in checked baggage (and be unavailable for the duration of the flight) at no cost.

Good guideline: your souvenir stuffed buffalo head is definitely going in checked baggage.

Change fees

For bookings made directly through westjet.com or by calling WestJet, the following fees apply.

Change fees apply for each affected flight – per direction, per person, and difference in fare may apply.

Change up to 24 hours after booking

Most bookings can be changed within 24 hours of booking. If you have reserved a flight that departs within 24 hours, change fees and fare rules will apply. Flights that depart more than 24 hours after the time of booking, can be changed within the first 24 hours for no fee, however any difference in fare will apply

Changes more than 24 hours after the time of booking

Basic fares: No changes are permitted.

All other fares: A change fee may apply and any difference in fare will apply.

Change fees are charged per direction, per person except for changes on flights to and from Europe, where change fees are charged per transaction, per person.

Fares with flexibility

EconoFlex, PremiumFlex and BusinessFlex: Change your flight for no fee. Any difference in fare will apply (excluding flights originating in South Korea).

For Member Exclusive fares, refer to the attributes of the equivalent fare bundle booked (e.g. for Member Exclusive (Economy), see rules for Econo; for Member Exclusive (Premium), see rules for Premium, etc.)
Effective November 4, 2021, for changes on a Member Exclusive fare, the original booking must be cancelled, and a new booking made, subject to Member Exclusive fare availability. This cancellation and rebooking can be done on Manage Trips, by calling our Contact Centre, or through the priority support numbers available to Platinum and Gold members. WestJet dollars on the cancelled booking will be reinstated to your account and the original expiration date (if applicable) will continue to apply. Member Exclusive fare bookings made before November 4, 2021 can be changed by calling our Contact Centre.
For companion voucher bookings, changes must be made before the expiry date of the voucher used for the original booking.

If you have paid for your reservation using a credit card or payment card and you'd like to use your Travel Bank credit(s) instead, please contact us within 24 hours of making your reservation. Changing the form of payment after 24 hours from the time of booking is not possible.

Life sometimes gets in the way of other plans. We understand, and we try to be as accommodating as possible when plans change at the last minute, and that’s why we offer the flexibility to make a same-day change close to your time of departure.

What is a same-day change?

A same-day change is a confirmed flight change requested starting at 24 hours before departure where the only difference is the time of departure. This means, when there is an earlier or later flight available, you may make a change, for a fee, at the airport or by calling WestJet if:

the flight is from the same origin to the same destination;
the flight is on the same calendar day as the original departure;
the flight is operated by WestJet (including WestJet Encore and WestJet Link by Pacific Coastal)
you purchased one of the following fares: Econo, EconoFlex, Premium, PremiumFlex, Business, BusinessFlex or Member Exclusive (Economy, Premium or Business); and
there is a seat available in the same cabin as originally booked.

Note: When flight is part of a WestJet Vacations package booking, same-day changes will apply to the flight only. WestJet and WestJet Vacations are not responsible for any impact to other planned or reserved activities, including but not limited to transfers, hotel reservations, excursions, etc. Any unused components will be forfeited.

When is a same-day change not available?

Same-day flight changes are not available when:

a Basic fare has been purchased;
you are travelling on a charter flight;
there is only one departure scheduled for that day; or
there are no remaining departures for the day (i.e., you are on the last flight of the day).
itinerary includes an overnight connection with flight departures on two different calendar days.

If your reservation is not eligible for a same-day change, regular change and cancel rules (and applicable fees) will apply.

If you fail to check in or board before the cut-off times, or to request a same-day change to your flight before it departs, you will be considered a no-show for your flight.

As an exclusive benefit available to Platinum and Gold WestJet Rewards members only, they will be able to contact WestJet up to two hours after flight departure to move to another flight departing on the same calendar day, based on availability.

Same-day flight change fees (plus taxes) will be charged per guest. A difference in fare will not be charged. Any reduction in fare will not be credited.

Changes will be accepted within 24 hours of the original booking without change fees. Guests will be required to pay the difference in fares.
Changes accepted 21 days or more before departure, and subject to a 100 CAD change fee per guest including GST.
Vacations booked with round-trip Premium fares will not be charged the change fee.
All vacations are subject to applicable supplier rates and charges.
Changes are re-booked at current retail price. A change of property is treated as a cancellation.
One name change is permitted outside of 21 days or more prior to departure per booking for a change fee of 100 CAD plus GST.
Hotel and other suppliers also have fees that may be applicable.

Cancellation fees

Cancellation fees apply for each affected flight – per direction, per person.

For all fares, except Basic, you may cancel flights up to two hours before scheduled departure. If you fail to cancel before your flight’s scheduled time of departure, you will be considered a no-show.

Most bookings can be cancelled within 24 hours of booking. If you have reserved a flight that departs within 24 hours, cancellation fees and fare rules will apply. Flights that depart more than 24 hours after the time of booking, can be cancelled within the first 24 hours for no fee.

Cancellations more than 24 hours after the time of booking

Basic fares: There is no refund or future travel credit for cancellations.

A cancellation fee may apply and any difference in fare will apply.

Cancellation fees are charged per direction, per person except for cancellations on flights to and from Europe, where cancellation fees are charged per transaction, per person.

EconoFlex fare: Cancel your flight for no fee. Credit will be deposited in your Travel Bank. (excluding flights originating in South Korea purchased on or after April 1, 2024)

PremiumFlex and BusinessFlex fares: Cancel your flight for no fee. Refund returned to original form of payment.

EconoFlex: Flights originating in South Korea, purchased on or after April 1, 2024, are refundable for a fee. Refund returned to original form of payment

Premium and Business between Canada and Asia: Cancel your flight for a fee. Refund returned to original form of payment.

Cancel within 24 hours of booking

Vacation package cancellations will be accepted within 24 hours of booking for no fee. The full amount of the package, or deposit paid, including refundable fees such as seat selection, will be fully refunded to the original form of payment.

Cancellations will be accepted 45 days or more before departure, subject to a $250 CAD cancellation fee per guest.
Vacations booked with round-trip Premium fares will not be charged the cancellation fee.
Hotel and other suppliers also have cancellation fees that may be applicable. The remainder of the booking price will be refunded back to the original form of payment.
Cancellations made 21 - 44 days before departure will result in 50% forfeit of the amount paid.
Cancellations made less than 21 days before departure will result in 100% forfeit of the amount paid.

Life sometimes gets in the way of other plans. We understand, and we try to be as accommodating as possible when plans change. You may cancel flights up to two hours before scheduled departure. If you fail to check in or board before the cut-off time or to request a same-day change to your flight before it departs, you will be considered a no-show for your flight. Any fare associated with the original flight and any connecting flight(s), that were no showed, would be forfeit. Any remaining fares would be available as a credit or refund based on the original fare rules.
