It was total disappointment for me...... It was our first trip to Belize and for me it will be the last one....... I've been many places around Caribbean Sea.......but Placencia was the worst experience .......I'm a beach person and expected to see a beautiful beach with white sand and turquoise water... Short beach line interrupted with the piles of garbage and smelly weeds from both sides (it means NO long beach walks, not even short walks:) ); seaweeds won't let you go through to swim......brrrr..... (maybe depends on season and we were not the lucky ones).......sand bugs eat me alive, the repellents didn't help at all. The resort is small, the rooms are nice and spacious; the lagoon side was extremely quiet (for me it was toooo quiet.....I barely saw few people there during all 6 days of our stay). All my stay I felt like I was fooled with a pretension to a top level location with many amenities and attractions but in reality..........it is all about nothing. Not worth the money we spent. The food, drinks, excursions...........everything is expensive and extra. Overall is my worst and most expensive vacation ever and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Clean modern hotel with large full apartment rooms in a beautiful setting. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The layout of the hotel gives you access to the lagoon and the sea. The only thing keeping me from ranking it as a 5 were the amenities. We needed to use the gym because we had bad weather and couldn't exercise outside every day. The gym was a poorly equipped small room. What little equipment they had was out dated and in poor condition. We ate several meals on the property and the quality was very inconsistent ranging from poor to excellent. On the night of a "special event", the entertainment of music and dancers was intolerably bad. Based on other reviews of limited shuttle service we rented a car in Belize City which I would highly recommend. There are great restaurants and activities that are only accessible by car. The yoga instructor, Stephanie was wonderful but the class was only offered 2 times a week.

Perfect place to end our stay in Belize

Placencia is a relaxed village and Umaya is equally as relaxed. Everyone was attentive, friendly, the rooms were very nice, clean and luxurious and the pool and beach area were just lovely. Couldn't say enough nice things about the place. We felt like we were at a much more upscale beach resort, but in fact, the price was very reasonable. We will definitely stay there again. Couple of tips. The resort is pretty far away from the village, but the hotel has a shuttle that will take you in a couple of times a day. The sand flies are no joke - and you don't see them. The itch from the bites happened days later, but it was intense. Carry and wear bug spray people!

The best resort of our trip!

We toured Belize for a total of 12 nights. Umaya resort was our last stop and we stayed there for 4 nights. We had a great time and truly enjoyed our stay. The rooms were large and perfect for our family of 4. There was even a kitchen with a full refrigerator, in case you want to do a longer stay. The best of all was the Indian chef Subbu that we met. We ate terrific Indian food from the Beer and Curry night but he also cooked us special Indian food that we could eat every night. It was terrific and amazing to be able to eat classic Indian food in a place like that, which completely sets it apart from any other resort in the area. If you choose to stay at this resort, I would highly recommend asking for the Indian chef and whatever Indian special he has that day. Subbu was truly amazing and elevated our stay!

We had a great stay at Umaya. The property is very well looked after, the rooms clean, very spacious and the views beautiful. I am not the type to pay more for a view so I had booked our family into a Lagoon room. We were actually given an ocean view room which I would pay for if we ever go back as the property is divided by a small highway. With the ocean view room we were right at the pool and on the ocean so super easy to make all the trips back to the room you make with kids. If I had anything negative to say about our stay it is that the staff are a bit too formal, not as warm, friendly, inviting, and cultural as our family likes. Certainly not rude, just too formal for us (with the exception of the shuttle drivers - George and Dwight were fantastic!). You are 12 miles from Placencia so a third shuttle each day would have been appreciated. Great food at Jaguar Bowling lanes and the Bistro which are both walking distance.
