First let me say the staff are wonderful. Rooms great .Pool just beautiful. Front desk A-1 but the ocean is not up to par with other hotels in cayo coco..it is not central to hotel.off to the far left of resort with 1/2 mile walk to get to a sandy beach?? the sister hotel on right of this hotel(Mathu Cayo Guillermo has a beach again with easier access but not central and is far right of the resort.you are welcome to visit but no drinks or food are shared or provided.. the buffet at my time of stay was nothing special .Breakfast was good.lunch & supper hot dishes they were always same foods.no fresh juice (orange, pinapple at buffet or at the bars..but to my surprise great choice of salad fixings like red tomatoes.cucumber.red onions and lots of lettuce and homemade dressing.Fresh bread.fresh fruits.we did not scrave.but for a 5 star I did expect the choice of craving station of a ham.turkey or roast of pork..all cooked meats were bones and fat???or hamburg or hot dog...a la cartes were good. in all it was a nice resort with great service.but if you are rated 5 star ..you have to be the best on the Island..and keep up high standards in food selections. i have visited many resorts on this island and the food choice were not what i expected along with the beach.

I visited the hotel in september, the hotel is amazing. Service excellent, bathrooms very clean, food and beverages very good. The rooms are very spacious and beautiful, the buffet had a good variety of food, the bars are fully stock with many types of alcohol. We tried the sports bar and cigar bar, good drink and great service. The lobby bar is great and the service is awesome Gustavo is the best! The snack bar is very good, there too excellent service. The infinity pools are sooo beautiful and plenty of chairs and beds. The beach is rocky but you can access on the left of the beach bar and much better there, they are planning on re doing it next winter, we spend an afternoon at the beach bar listening to our music and had drinks, we had excellent service there also. The dancers at night in the lobby awesome. My star goes to Aracely, she went above and beyond to take care of us, we were given beautiful seaview rooms,we were 6 of us and we all got a breakfast served in our rooms, oh my god the food we had and the way it was presented just amazing. I also ordered a dinner in my room, surf & turf...comes with champagne, red and white wine she arranged a cake and special decorations, by far best special dinner i have ever had! She was always making sure everything was to our satisfaction, thank you my sweet Aracely. I have nothing bad to say about this hotel, we had a great vacation and we are all looking at going back soon. A+

We were at Gran Muthu Imperial Sept 27- Oct 4. We will compare this to the Melia Des Jardines, Memories Flamenco and Sanctuary Grand Memories in Cayo Santa Maria. We have stayed at each of these hotels in the last 2 years. Disclaimer: This was very low season. Only 3 hotel blocks were open and there were very few guests. Only 1 al la carte restaurant per night was open and less than a quarter of the buffet was open. We knew and expected this to be the case. When you go off season, we expect only some parts of the hotel to be open and the resort to be very quiet. We needed this on our vacation. This was a similar time to when we stayed at Melia. We were at the Memories and Sanctuary in April which is at the end of high season. Lobby and Grounds: The lobby is one of the best lobbies of the 4 hotels. It is large with very comfortable seating. We loved the round loungers especially looking out over the pool and ocean from the lobby. The layout of the lobby is better than all the other hotels and the view from the lobby past the pools to the oceans is amazing. The grounds are young but maturing. The grounds are better than Melia and more lush. It is great to have some change in elevation throughout the resort. Finally, this hotel is a moderate sized hotel with everything reasonably close. What makes this hotel a standout is how well the hotel blocks and buildings are laid out. Most of the rooms have a view of the oceans with many rooms having outstanding views to the ocean. The room: The rooms are well appointed with a generous shower, decent room size and a good balcony. We were in room 9205 which had a great ocean view from the top floor. Most rooms come with ocean view but building 8 &9 would have the best with 6,7,4 being the next best. These rooms are comparable to the other hotels and all are great for guests. Food: The food in Cuba has gotten a lot better in the last few years. We have been lucky to not experience shortages at the resorts we stayed at while others had issues at the same time. The buffet is good with grill stations, pizza station and pasta station. The buffet is similar to Melia and Memories and better than the layout at Sanctuary. We did not do any a la carte restaurant so cannot comment. The pool: The best pool of the 4 hotels! Three free flowing pools, two with infinity edge and lots of in water seating and ledges. The pools are visible from the lobby and out to the ocean. The bottom pool has an amazing view over the infinity edge to the ocean. There are plenty of lounge chairs and sun beds (love laying on a sun bed in the afternoons for a quick nap). There is some shade by the pool and they will bring you an umbrella if you ask. The Melia pool is close in comparison with both Memories and Sanctuary coming in last. Beach: The beach ranks in 4th place of the 4 hotels. The beach is decent but does not match the beauty of the other hotels. The water did get deeper, faster than Melia and Memories and did not have the same sand bars as you walk out. On this stretch of beach, it had the least seaweed of the hotels (Sol, Iberostar, Tryp, Melia) but the beach is narrow and not with the same quality of sand. However, we spoke to a number of people and they are rebuilding the beach in 2020 by bringing in sand from the ocean floor. This made an incredible difference on the other beaches and will do the same here. When that work is done, this beach will be almost the same as the other beaches. The difference will be that it is not as long. For super long walks on the beach, head over to the sister resort, Grand Muthu. Bars: The bar and drinks were good. Some top shelf choices were not available as they were at Sanctuary but I still had my 7yr old rum. The sports bar was better than Memories and all bars were better than Sanctuary in terms of layout and size. Special mention to Jennifer in the upper pool bar for the most perfect drinks. Shows: Melia has the best shows. Since it was low season here, there was some after dinner music in the lobby followed by the usual shows. The music acts were good but not like the quality at the other hotels. Off beach snorkeling: We did take a catamaran out past the island to do snorkeling one day. The reef was way better than other places we have done and so much better than the glass bottom boat tour/snorkelling from Cayo Coco. It was just two of us (plus two guides) and we had almost an hour to swim. We saw lots of fish (more than other reefs in the area). We saw a string ray swim out from the coral and we got close and personal to a 3 foot long shark who swam beneath us( thanks to our two guides) Off resort trips: Excursions are the same from these resorts there is no difference. However, from here, we walked to Pillar beach one day(45min walk along the road) and that beach is almost perfect. We also walked down to the Tryp along the beach so we saw most of Cayo Guillarmo Overall: We would rank this hotel similar to Melia Des Jardines overall and better than both the Memories Flamenco and Sanctuary Memories in Cayo Maria.

This resort is beautiful....but lacks many things. The resort beach is not very good. I wouldn't even bother going there. The sister resorts beach is much better but it is a fair distance and you can't eat or drink over there. Pilar beach is the best but it's a 10 minute drive and 5 pesos each plus 2 pesos per lounger. The daytime entertainment lacks any imagination or fun. Their idea of crazy game is ring toss or catching a tennis ball in a tube. The pool bar starts closing down at 4:30 and they are out of there before 5. Should be open to 6 for sure. The whole resort is very dark. Very little lighting so going for a walk at night is risky. And the washrooms seemed to be out of toilet paper all the time. Not much to do outside the resort as there is nothing around there. So if you want quiet and relaxing by the pool then this is the place. Evening entertainment was ok. All in the lobby because it was a quiet week. All in all it was a nice get away with great weather, ok food and the price was right...but I think you get more bang for your buck elsewhere. Going back to Mexico in December.
