We went here on March break. In good conscience I couldn’t recommend it to another traveller. There were just too many small annoyances you don’t expect on vacation. If you come to this area of Cuba expect a long bus ride to your resort;at least an hour. We arrived at night but Check in was pretty smooth and a bell hop drove us to our lodging. Imagine the shape of a bike and you have the general layout of the resort with the pools being the hub of each wheel. I was surprised at how little English was spoken and often resorted to our google translator to communicate. I read a lot of reviews raving about the beach. It is spectacular.Sunrises and sunsets were incredible. Although the resort borders the water there is at least a 100 meter narrow boardwalk to get there. We could only go to the beach 1 day because the wind was so strong every other day. Waves were huge and sand was blowing everywhere. It’s not sheltered at all and conditions will be a coin toss. It’s easy to get a drink at the beach bars but not to your palapa. There are 2 large buffet areas. One for lunch close to the boardwalk and a second for breakfast and supper by the main lobby. There is a 24 hour food bar in the Center court. There was a reasonable variety at each and like any other resort had there peak and low times. Unfortunately most dishes either weren’t labelled or had faded folded cards above them. There was no way to know what you were going to eat or drink. In a foreign country guessing is ridiculous and frustrating because it’s such an easy fix. Remember there is no ketchup or syrup in Cuba and few if any condiments. We ate at 3 restaurants during the week. The Cuban and Thai restaurants were good. The ‘chef’pizzeria restaurant was awful and we left for the buffet. Kids will hate it so don’t think it will be the ‘go to’place. We spent most of our time sunbathing by the 2 pools. One is noisy and oriented for families. The other is quiet and directed towards relaxation. If you want interaction, loud music and activities the first is for you. If your a reader or a napper go with the second. Both have swim up bars and mini diners for lunch. They will give you a menu but you can only order 1/4 of the items on it. It’s the same at the 24 hour diner as well. Why have selections listed if you can’t get them? Just another annoyance. The bars/restaurants have orange Fanta and coke only. You can buy other sodas at their resort stores but doesn’t that defeat the purpose of an all inclusive? Our room was spacious but very dated. Doors were difficult to close, light bulbs were out, beds were reminiscent of army cots and we had hot water on and off for 3 days until we were relocated to another room. Towels and water were replaced daily and interesting bed artwork greeted us when we returned to our room each day. The washrooms have toilets and bidets. The front lobby, courtyard and grounds are beautiful. The amphitheater had entertainment each night at 930. Bar service and table service was normally good here. We played cards and sat in the rocking chairs each night. You can purchase internet wifi here for 1peso/hour which is reasonable. It is located next to the bank. Remember any Cuban currency you get can’t be taken off the island.Apparently the morning coffee in the lobby is fantastic. We hired a vintage car at the entrance for 8 pesos to take us to the local market about 2 Kms away although there was a small market on the resort by the gym/spa.I didn’t go to the spa but the gym was dated but appreciated (10 cardio devices, free weights and 5 resistance machines). There are 6 very nice tennis courts with a practice wall alongside this area. Overall I found the resort dated and past it’s prime. You can get a bigger bang for your buck at other resorts. Vacation is not a time for annoyances and there were lots here.

We stayed here for 7 days (March 8 to 15) and it was great! The resort is huge. We were at building 33 which was fairly close to the buffet and activity pool. We appreciated the crib they provided for our 1 year old and the room was nice and clean. Our housekeeper, Mylene, left us with lovely notes everyday and was very creative with the towels. We took advantage of the baby club twice and entrusted our child to Leidy, who took very good care of our baby. The gardens were beautifully maintained and the staff were always friendly. We tried the Latin, Mediterranean and Oriental restaurants. The ambience was nice, the food was okay. The beer garden was good! The buffet was good too, they had stations where they cook the food live, which I really liked. And on Fridays you can have all you can eat langoustines for 20cucs. and we had them outdoor which was lovely. I would definitely recommend this resort.

We stayed at Melissa Las Dunas from March 9-16. We would go back again. As our usual travel is to Mexico; we were not sure what to expect in Cuba. The people were extremely friendly. Overall the resort is actually not that spread out. Walking from one end of resort to the other was easily done. As most restaurants are centrally located so no matter where you stay you are not that far away. The beaches and water were incredibly beautiful. There was a decent amount of wind when we were there but that did not stop us from enjoying the beach and the water. There were a lot of chairs/palapas for everyone. Pool areas: we spent our pool time on the adult side so pools were quiet, relaxing and in decent shape. Clean area and lots of seating for everyone. Food: we ate meals at the buffet, snack bar and ala carts. Our favourite a la cart was the Asian. Excellent food and yes I had the beef and it was very good. At a couple a la carts you may not get exactly what is advertised on the menu but they had a substitute if something was not available (remember this is cuba and supplies are not always consistent). Buffet was ok. The selection was not always big however the food was always prepared well. The fresh grill stations were always busy (pork, beef, chicken and fish was always available). Again supplies are not always consistent so don’t expect to see cheese or condiments at every meal. We never had any trouble finding something to eat. The snack bars were good as well. If they have pizza available it was very good there. Hamburgers and chicken were always available (fries were hit and miss). The snack bars are menu order not buffet style on the adult side. On the family side I believe they had some buffet items. Bars: we are not big drinkers however the bar staff was excellent. Do not expect poolside service or beach service as you will have to go to bar to get your drinks there but they were always serving with a smile on their face and not skimpy on the alcohol. The lobby bar was always busy with excellent drinks and cappuccinos available as well as being open 24 hours. Overall grounds are pretty clean, lots of vegetation and nice flowers/shrubs. It makes walking from one area to another very peaceful and relaxing. Rooms are a bit dated but again clean and comfortable. We would definitely come back. Specific shout out to Junian(I hope that is right) at the main buffet. Your service was always excellent and very personable.

We had our wedding at Melia Las Dunas and it was the most stress-free and special day. Everything was taken care of with the expert help of Maria Elena, wedding coordinator, and she went above-and-beyond to ensure we had the perfect day based on our preferences. Everything was explained very clearly and no detail was overlooked. The ceremony was on the beach, and it was one of the best beaches I've ever been to - turquoise crystal clear waters, white sand. We had all our needs taken care of throughout the week, with some extra perks of being newlyweds. Love this resort and we hope to go back for our anniversary some day! Muchas gracias Maria Elena por todo!

Here are my pros and cons Pros Beautiful beach, the best in the world Gardiner works, the vegetation is perfect Workers are very nice, smiling and doing a great job Oriental A La carte is very good Pool chair are nice (was only on adult pool) Nice pool water (seen a lot of bad water in other travel) Lots of shades at pool and beach Cons (It was my 5th time in Cuba, 3 rd in Cayo Santa Maria so what describe here is in comparasion with other CUan resort, not 5 stars in Riviera Maya) Lots of soft drink missing at bars (for mix). No Sprite (or lemon pop), cola missing 2 days, no light soft drink Beach bar missing beer often (temporally but missing beer) Buffet was awful worst that i never seen, Missing soya sauce for fried rice at all serve (1 bottle per meal only), No choice at all, cook at pasta good one day, the next the guys was doing them wrong,... Missing hot water many times for shower (morning, end of the day, you never know) No can of beer at beer garden (received some the last day) Small place like beer garden or pool restaurant had half of the stock missing on the menu You take a dish one day, the other it is completely different No mini-bar filling (reason no stock but the sell it at the little store on the resort) One day we arrive, no hot water for shower arond 5pm (ok not first time), at the end of the night, we got to the room and it was so hot, air conditionning not working. Room beside us same thing. Can't call reception, phone not working in both of our room all week long. Go to the front desk and they said : "Yes we know, we closed that section (adult side) this afternoon cause not enought people, we can give you a new room! " Ok why you didn't tell that decision to all people before mid-night??? Need to paint all room (the 4 we saw the inside) There was the rest of a police seal on my door with paint over it. I know stuff can happen but can you clean something like that please!!! King side bed for them is 2 twin beside, with the crak between them Lots of outdoor light burned, mainly those who bring you to your room so was scary for the womans Beach chair broken (like at least 25% are not usable) Tile missing in the pool (like big section) Decorative water pool are empty in the central portion, in others with water you see old electric wire like there was something before but removed I was one of those who defended Cuba when people said it was not the quality of Dominican republic or Riviera Maya but that travel will make me take a break from Cuba and will think twice before going back
