The good, great and how to improve
N2727KHmicheled (London, Canada) on Mar 17, 2024
This is my second time at this resort and for some background I've been to 6 other resorts in Cuba and the Dominicanand Antigua. We are Canadian and a family of 4 with two teens. We love this place for its jungle feel, great food, so many animals wandering around and of course the beach. They have a family of monkeys living here that visit all over. They were on my balcony our first day here. It was magical. The beach is fantastic. Great soft sand, shallow entry, yes some seaweed but they do a great job of cleaning it up. It is the ocean. One of my only complaints is that there needs to be more beach shade. If you are not up by 7 it's unlikely you will get a palapa, during March break anyway. They say no reserving chairs but everyone does. But if you leave them for too long, 90 min, they will scoop your towels onto a nearby chair and give your palapa to someone else. We had this happen one day as we went to do archery after breakfast. So I was up at 630 to lose my palapa later. That is my only real complaint. The restaurants were all good. Only the Japanese offers a reservation. It was the best. Awesome food, great show, the best service. All others are 1st come 1st serve. We waited 30 min to eat at the Italan one night. It was worth it. Great steak. The star friends are fantastic. They all work hard to entertain the guests and get them involved. They were great with my teens. Even played rock paper scissors with my daughter to decide if she played water basketball. She lost, played and loved it. They played volleyball, did archery, pool games, swam and especially loved the foam party on the beach. Daniel was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Our best service at the buffet was from Roman he worked so hard and deserves a promotion... best service of the week. Wendy was great for morning yoga, all the bartenders work so hard and manage to stay friendly despite blender drinks all day. We loved the ice cream bar open all day by the beach and the flavored water available there too. If they could provide more shade this place would be perfect. Maybe taking space from the star prestige area and putting up more palapas or making star prestige cheaper, would let people who need shade be more well rested on their r vacation.
Great Trip !!!

We just came back from a one week trip at Tucan. It was a great trip. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, Jessica at the Member Club, Gabi and all the staff at the star camp where so nice, the staff at the Beach were awesome specially Neycy, The boot camp classes were challenging and the girls at the spa where always smiling and made us feel comfortable. The food was pretty good, they had a good mix everyday we were there . We stay at a premium room, for my surprise we had no outlets near the beds , only one outlet available in the room, but always clean and organized . It felt to me that they were a little short staffed we could see some cups left at the same place for days . The rooms felt a little warm at times and the spa is super warm too. Be aware on the beach it is ok for kids to get in because the waives are small but as you go farther away the waves are small but a lot at the time so make sure you know how to swim it can get challenging with so many waves at the time. Overall a great experience, we spend most of the day at the beach, but I can see that some upgrades will be necessary soon. Will get back for new years and my wife’s birthday. If you are a couple or a family you can’t go wrong there is something to do for everyone one, the pool is huge, they have an adult pool, the water at the beach was amazing very little sargassum but I was told the next 90 days it gets heavier . Around 45 minutes from the airport port, 10 minutes from 5th avenue at playa del Carmen . We will be back soon, Thank you all for a great Vacation.
Everything we expected

Booked this hotel for one week from a package with BA and so pleased we did. The room we had (block 13..) was easy access to pool and beach but away from any noise. I have read other reviews saying it was not possible to adjust AC etc. No such problems for us and actually during the evening the ceiling fan alone was sufficient. The bed was not too hard and pillows provided were good. It is looking a bit aged in places so it could do with a modern touch up, but everything worked as it should. A few more power points would help. Food. We found the Buffet to have served excellent food daily for all the time we were there. Knowing a bit about Mexican food (not Tex Mex but proper Mexican) there were many authentic dishes available. A good variety of other dishes that cater for most needs. Plenty of cakes, fruit. Different themes nightly and Mexico night for us was the best evening. Yes, there is an argument to say that some food is prepared too far in advance (especially meats) but with a Buffet it's a delicate balancing act to get right. We tried the Mexican restaurant and I have to say, the Mexican dishes in the Buffet were actually superior. So that was a disappointment. Sadly the Japanese restaurant was not open the 2 nights we wanted to try. The Italian and Med. restaurant we did not try. Having an Italian wife and living in Europe we primarily came for local type dishes. You only need to book for the Japanese restaurant. I had read before all restaurants bar the buffet were pre-booked. The Ice Cream stand near the pool is good and if you should fancy burger, chips etc there is a stand near the beach which was always well stocked. Drinks. I am not the biggest of drinkers but there is an argument to say maybe the measures being served are not the strongest alcohol content, but I am sure if one wishes they can just drink more. Or just ask for doubles. Plenty of flavoured waters as well and in our room we had no issues with water and the mini-bar always being well stocked. Coffee onsite is the only negative. If you like a good strong coffee you will not find that here. Nightly entertainment. Yes some of it is a bit cheesy but the fire show on the beach and LED show were enjoyable. Mexico night was also very good but considering they must do it weekly it could have been a bit slicker. Pool and Beach. The main negative is having to be up before 7 to ensure you manage to get a sun lounger for the day. We were up at this time as the sunrise was then and the wildlife (which I will discuss later) ensure you are awake most mornings. The hotel say they try and stop people getting up early and reserving loungers but it happens far to often. Some loungers are taken before 7 and nobody will arrive until mid-morning. The entertainment in the pool was ok. I did not participate myself but family enjoyed the daily aerobic pool workout and there were also events on the beach if you wished to join in. The Pool party on Thursday was also good family fun. The beach and ocean is as good as it looks in the photos. We unfortunately were there a week when it was quite breezy so the sea was a bit rough but you can't control nature. It did not stop us going in the water or relaxing by the sea front though. There are other daily activities and the App is worth downloading to see the timetable. Or there is a notice board with daily updates. Wildlife. It's great to see so much wildlife walking freely around, or as is the case with the Howler Monkeys swinging from the trees. The Howler Monkeys will start calling out anytime from 5am to 6am so be prepared to be woken up early. This does make getting a sun lounger easier being awake so early. The peacocks roam freely around everywhere and the Agouti you will also see walking around enjoying themselves. The Coati as well can be quite nosey at times and as advised do not feed. One daft sod we saw feeding a Monkey suddenly had about 10 Coati's trying to get a piece of the action. Saw a few Racoons as well roaming about. Trips. We booked a trip via the travel desk and it was with Blue Caribe. Excellent trip and for a trip to see Chichen Itza, Cenote etc I would highly recommend. It was an early start though. The staff in all the restaurants are extremely helpful and go out there way to help you and take 5 minutes to ask them how they are etc. How long they have worked there. I am sure there are things I may have forgotten but for us as a family, in conclusion we had a great time and would recommend.
Go elsewhere!!!

We are currently visiting Iberostar quetzel/Tuscan. Were leaving tomorrow and I don't think I've ever wanted to go home so badly on a mexico trip. VERY disappointed with the service here. A day after going in their pool I broke out with a nasty itchy fungal infection rash. Last night my eye almost swell shut from the Horrible rash. I asked to be compensated a bit of money to cover my medical costs and my treatment that I will now need when I go back home and they refused!!!! I saw the resort doctor and they denied that my rash came from the pool and they wanted me to go to the local hospital to get test done to see if it was actually from the water. I did not feel comfortable going to a hospital in Mexico, I've heard horror stories!!! Doctor did say that my rash is very contagious!!! The entertainment was absolutely GARBAGE!!! The worst entertainment at a resort that we have ever been to and we go down south every single winter. This one was by far the worst. Literally every night we were bored. Food selection is slim. The food at the buffet near the lobby was okay (same foods every single day. They do not change it up at all ) However, all other restaurants we did not enjoy. The Mexican restaurant was so bad, that out of six people at the table after one bite of our food we left!! Our sheets on our bed looked dirty from day one. Also, we did not get any water bottles in our room. Instead they give you refillable water glass water bottles ( that you're not even allowed to take out of your rooms). I was very pissed off to see that the water bottles were not cleaned prior to our check-in as it had somebody's lipstick still on the rim!! Our room smelt of sewer & they have the thermostats preset so you cannot adjust the temperature in the room. My husband and I had a hard time sleeping because the beds were rock hard in the room was blasted hot!! I do not usually write a review. However, I really felt compelled to let everyone know not to go to this resort. Not worth your hard earned money. I feel like when I went to go complain about what was going on at this resort the workers did not listen to me.
Wonderful

We decided to stay at this hotel at the recommendation of our friends who stay here regularly. We travel often and like to choose Iberostar Hotels as we are impressed with the service and cleanliness. We opted for the Prestige and it was well worth it for the beach area. The beach is spectacular! The water is crystal clear and no rocks or seaweed. Neyei is an incredible server and is eager to bring you delicious drinks throughout the day. Emmanuel and Javier would help us with towels and Bali beds. Very friendly. Alexis in the Star Prestige is kind and professional. He deals well with any concerns or issues that might arise and is eager to ensure that you have the best trip possible. The Tucan side buffet has a Prestige area for breakfast and Benito made the best coffees and mimosas! He was very friendly and attentive to our needs. The grounds are stunning. Very manicured and taken care of. There are peacocks and monkeys and other wild animals running around. It truly makes you feel like you're in a jungle but still with 5 star amenities and service. I must applaud the staff as they are extremely hard working and do everything to make your stay wonderful.
