Tips for San Francisco's Most Elegant, Classy Hotel

The Fairmont is perhaps San Francisco's best known hotel. Built in 1906 on Nob Hill, the hotel survived the earthquake, but extensive damage meant that it did not open until 1907. It was the classiest hotel in San Francisco at the time, and remains an AAA Four-Diamond luxury hotel that is a City landmark . The Fairmont was built by the daughters of U.S. Senator James Graham Fair and was named for him. It subsequently became the vanguard of the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts chain, all upscale and expensive hotels. Stay in the Fairmont San Francisco for a special occasion for an experience of historic elegance. There are some hotels you have to stay in at least once if you can afford it. If you can't, it is worth it just to stroll the ground floor and see the beautiful Chinese antiques. The ground floor lobby and restaurant have beautiful marble walls and pillars and elegant furnishings. The bedrooms are comfortable although they and the bathrooms are somewhat on the small side as is typical of older hotels. I rated the hotel with four stars because we have not been impressed with the restaurants. The Tiki room is fun. The main restaurant on the first floor has a surprisingly short menu. Breakfast and lunch options are... sparse. The food was good, but not at the level one would expect from such a landmark hotel. We had a chicken and waffle option and the fish tacos, but expected more salad options and Asian food so were a little disappointed. The wait staff was great, however.

The Fairmont is a classic old grand hotel. We were offered an upgrade for an additional fee, and took it because of the wonderful balcony. The view was great! The hotel staff was very helpful, the price was reasonable, and the location was good. Room service was also good. The bathroom was a bit small, though, and the restaurant service spotty.

My wife and I stayed here as part of our 10 year anniversary trip. Upon arriving the room we were given in the main building had a smokey smell to it. Not cigarettes - most likely the HVAC system. We called the front desk who immediately moved us to another room in the tower. This was the start of a wonderful two night visit. I love being able to take the cable car to and from the hotel to get around the city. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. Service was also excellent. My one complaint is about the "resort fee" we were charged each night. I understand this if you are at a resort - but city hotels shouldn't be able to charge these. Especially when you aren't getting breakfast, access to an onsite pool, etc.

Excellent hotel and while not in the downtown area can ride the old Victorian cable car up and down the hill. Service and room very good. Breakfast very good. Only comment doorman on arrival could have been more helpful with luggage through revolving door.

I’ve stayed at Fairmont before and they always out do theirselves. This location was the Knob Hill. Perfect to get to main area and downtown. As you all know the steep hills of San Fran can be tough and this hotel is located on one. Check in was amazing Michael at the front gave me a great room over looking the garden. The o Ly odd thing about the room was the bathroom door opened out to block the hotel room door. So if you left the bathroom door open and someone walked in the doors collided into each other. The rooms were clean and roomy. The garden is spectacular. I worked outside every morning while getting some great vitamin D. The bartenders in the hotel restaurant were great. They serve fever tree tonic so that was a huge plus. The Tonga Hut is a fun corky place if you want to experience it. worth making reservations.
