Our stay would not have been nearly as good without Heyde, Rigo, Crystal and Juan Carlos. Love this place but rooms and food could use extra attention. Heyde remembered all our names. Rigo is the very best bartender ever. Crystal pays attention to your every need at portofinos. Juan welcomed us from the beginning and made sure we were comfortable at all times. This is not a 5 star hotel. Rooms need updated and general maintenance. It would have been nice to have pool and beachside food. We will go back but if property continues to deteriorate I’m afraid this won’t continue to be our winter get away.

On site Entertainment staff members Heydy and Monserrat are the epitome of wonderful hostesses ALWAYS smiling and helpful and encouraging (in a friendly way) participation; I truly enjoyed Zumba daily with Heydy and on her day off with Monserrat. We had a wonderful time with these ladies and they grew to be a part of our group. A definite asset to your team!!!!

I wouldn't necessarily call it a 5 Golden Apple, but I was pleasantly surprised

We booked our trip to Cozumel with Carol at Apple Vacations. We decided to try a 5 Golden Apple Square Deal so we didn't find out where we were staying until the Thursday before our flight out on Saturday 1/18. I read quite a few reviews before our trip, so I wasn't expecting a whole lot. We flew into Cancun and had a 30-45 minute drive to the ferry to take us to Cozumel. Our AmStar representatives got us to the ferry and made sure our crossing went off without a hitch! Our first issue was with the taxi van that took us to the resort. The old Ford Econoline van had seen better days and when we encountered any incline at all the van would slow to 20 mph or 40 kmh and the engine would stall. Needless to say it took longer than expected to get to the resort. When we finally arrived at the resort we asked at the front desk if there was any chance to be moved next door to Secrets (Carol with Apple suggested we try, and it never hurts to ask). We were told we could move for an additional $1000. We decided we would try out Sunscape. We were travelling with two other couples and we all checked in and were assigned our rooms, the process was quite fast. It would have been nice to have been offered a complimentary beverage during this process as most 5 star resorts generally do. Our suitcases were loaded on a cart and we followed our bellman to Villa 32 and room 3222. Our friends were then shown to their rooms. While we were getting settled in our friends were discovering that they weren't as fortunate with their room assignments. One of the couples we were travelling with had a room that almost none of the few outlets worked. The other couple had a first floor room with a broken bathroom window. Both couples reported the problems to the front desk staff and discovered that these issues had been previously reported by other guests and nothing had been done to fix the issues. In the end both couples were given different rooms the next day, and one couple was even offered an upgrade to Secrets before receiving their third room of the trip. They decided to stay so they could be close to the group. The weather was warm with a couple of afternoon showers, obviously we know that the resort cannot control the weather. Our last day was quite windy, but it was sunny and warm. The beach was beautiful and the pools were both clean. The restaurants had wonderful food. The first night we went to bed early and we didn't eat dinner. We woke the next morning and walked the beach and the eat Portofino for breakfast. We enjoyed the Italian place on the second evening. Their pizzas were small so we got additional calzones. The third evening we decided to go to the Mexican restaurant. The food there was wonderful. Our waiter was the best, I wish I could recall his name. He treated us to ice cream with chocolate syrup in addition to the fried dough with cream cheese. For our final dinner we ate at El Patio. At least I think that was the name. You can eat there for lunch too. The ceviche is wonderful, as is the potato crab soup. Our drink cups were never empty thanks to Wilberth who always had a smile. That guy works his butt off! Our maid Alisen (sp) always kept our room clean and filled with water. At one point I counted 19 bottles of water in our room. If we needed additional beer or water we just left a note in the room and our fridge was filled that day. If you are picky and are expecting to be waited on hand and foot this is probably not the place for you. If you are going to Cozumel to have fun and enjoy yourself , and your expectations aren't sky high, this may suit your needs. Honestly, yes, the place may need a little TLC, but the folks are friendly and do make an effort. Just go, have fun, and tip the folks a little something, you may be surprised.

We once again had another great vacation at Sunscape. This time we brought my sister and brother in law, their first time to Mexico. They loved Sunscape and cannot wait to go back. The food is great. Yes, the buffet can get repetitive, but the flavors and choices are wonderful. The other restaurants are great! I love lunch at sunnyside, the ceviche, gringa, and mushroom empanada are my favorites. Of course, the staff is wonderful! Juan Carlos the bellman is extremely helpful, professional, and friendly. He's ready and willing to help you with whatever you need. Antonio is helpful as well, and always greeting you with a smile. The bartenders will make you whatever you want and they will fill your big mugs if you choose to bring them. Some people will say that some of the staff are pushy with the sales pitch for a timeshare. Smile and say no thank you, and keep walking. No one forces you to do anything. This is not a big deal to me, because they are just doing their job, and you get it other places too. If you want to give some of your time to listen (an hour or 90 min) during breakfast, you can get some perks towards an excursion, rental, or resort money. Worth it to some. Some areas of certain rooms may need updating, but if there is a problem the staff will take care of it for you. When do you spend time in there anyway? The bed was cozy and the A/C was cold. We always had a refilled minifridge and extra bottles of water and coffee refilled for the next day. There is a reason I keep going back. The people and the place! There is always some sort of activity going on, day and night. Don't listen to picky reviewers who need ultra-luxury accommodations, just go, relax, enjoy the people, the culture, and the beautiful sea! I'm already booked to go back in May with my two daughters.

Horrible food and room! Expect to get the poops from everything you eat here! Rooms were very dirty, mold around sink, bed is rock hard, shower has to plug and sprays out to the floor, bugs in room, dresser drawers wouldn't shut, tv remote didn’t work, and safe didn’t work. Payed extra for a king ocean side and we looked out at a tree behind a building. Main areas like pool and ocean are nice. Activity director Hayde was awesome, called ya by name each day and always had something for us to do!
