Beautiful on the outside, not so nice on the inside

DFWtravels_12 (Dallas, Texas) on Apr 13, 2024

This hotel has beautiful grounds but the rooms are terrible. It needs to be completely gutted and redone. The first night we stayed in a room near the lobby and all night we heard noise from outside and door slamming inside. We switched rooms for the next 2 nights and they put us in the very back of the hotel. Room and bathroom smaller, but it was quieter. I think because nobody was next door. The walls are paper thin - not Hyatt Regency quality. In addition, the thermostat is fixed at a low of 68 degrees - these are old window type units. I don’t understand why hotels do this when it is well documented that ideal sleeping temperature is 65 degrees. I am paying to sleep well! Upon check-in at any hotel with the fixed temp like this I request maintenance to adjust temp for to 64 or 65 for sleeping and they typically accommodate. This hotel would not adjust the temp down for us. Instead they turned the fan on so it ran continuously at 68. I left balcony door open for a hour before bed to help cool the room then the fan stayed on overnight. Not ideal, but it was better than nothing. Our second room did get a bit cooler than our first room. It is a shame they haven’t renovated this hotel because the grounds are beautiful and the location is great. They have a coffee bar where you can walk up to get a small breakfast. The front desk and maintenance did their best to accommodate my requests. I appreciated the move to the other building. And, I have to give Hyatt kudos for upgrading their hair dryers!

Potential theft, no response from hotel management, aging property and poor service

richxz (San Francisco, California) on Apr 09, 2024

I've stayed at Hyatt hotels as one of their most frequent guests (Globalist for over 10 years, 600+ nights lifetime) and have stayed at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach multiple times since 2014. On my most recent stay (March 2024), we left a wallet in the room with a $100 bill inside of it, taking only an ID/credit card with us while we visited Catalina Island for the day. We came back to find the $100 bill missing. This was reported to front line hotel management, which did little to remedy the situation during our stay. After the stay, I sent an email to the hotel's General Manager to provide an opportunity to address the incident. As I write this review (1 week later), I have received no response. While I understand theft is difficult to prove, the fact is $100 went missing from a wallet inside our room (#328), the only entry into our room on the day the $100 went missing (as confirmed by a room key audit) was by a housekeeper, and as compensation we were offered 5000 Hyatt points (which, for those who may not know the value of Hyatt points, is worth virtually nothing). It's disappointing that this property has gone so far downhill since my first stay here 10 years ago. I could have stomached an aging property, poor service, and no recognition of loyalty, without posting a review. But potential theft by hotel staff, met with zero response from the property's upper management, is something that other travelers should heed warning to before they decide to stay here. I should note, Hyatt is truly a fantastic hotel chain overall, as evidenced by my loyalty to the brand for 10+ years running. Unfortunately, the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach is an outlier, and not representative of most Hyatt properties.
