Birthday trip to ERC last year, first time at EPM and it was amazing!

Last year we celebrated my fiance's 40th birthday at Excellence Riviera Cancun and one of our friends who attended wanted to celebrate his 40th this year in a similar fashion. Excellence Playa Mujeres totally lives up to the hype! It can be as rowdy or chill as you wish-- great for couples seeking romance or a friend group ready to throw down. We had a swim up room in Building 4 which is far away from the action. Great for peace and quiet. Last year we had a similar room at ERC and the lazy river was much more exciting there. Often times we were the only two people in the lazy river at EPM. Very peaceful. Since it was such a hike, we would leave our room in the morning and not come back until it was time to change for dinner. Next time I'd like to be in either buildings 1 or 7 to still have access to the lazy river but not so far away. The food was fantastic and the vibes of the restaurants were awesome-- a slight edge over ERC. At both resorts, however, our favorite meals were at Basmati. We also loved Chez Isabelle and Agave. The restaurants seemed more updated than at ERC. As everyone mentions, the service could not be more outstanding. We wanted for nothing and never felt like we were bothering anyone. Shoutouts: Diego kept us drunk and laughing at the Cigar Lounge our last two nights. He could not be more enthusiastic or sincere. He is a tremendous asset to EPM. Moises was our waiter on the beach almost every day and was super attentive and friendly. We would pick our palapa just to be in his section. Fabian was our concierge and though we only met him once (he sought us out at breakfast one morning), he totally delivered with a special bottle in our room for my fiance's birthday. Both ERC and EPM are beyond amazing and I would gladly return to both. I would say that ERC is better for a friend group and EPM is better for couples, though to be honest a friend group at EPM is great, too. Can't wait until another one of our friends turns 40 so we can return!

The resort was so welcoming all staff so attentive to our needs. It provided both a relaxing calming romantic setting, while intertwining so much fun. The restaurants all offered great variety and the food was excellent!

Where to begin? If you are reading this because you are considering booking EPM, then just book it. Do not hesitate, because you will not regret it. We have recently returned from our first trip and I must have stalked Tripadvisor for at least a year beforehand. Even then, with so many superb reviews and repeat customers, I still did not quite believe that it could be that good. But it was! It far exceeded our expectations and blew us away. We haven’t stopped talking about it since we got back and are already looking at booking for next year. We had an EC swim up suite which was awesome. It was amazing to be able to step directly into the pool or just lounge on your deck on one of two very comfortable beds. I fact, I wish I had spent more time just laying there, drinking margaritas, but there was so much to do, I had to get up occasionally! I read about lack of privacy with these rooms, but we were directly opposite the Grill and it wasn’t an issue at all and we usually like peace and quiet. In fact, it was great just to people watch and chat to people floating by, or swim through to the swim up bar for yet another margarita. The rooms were awesome, amazing shower, toiletries, fluffy towels, robes, the most comfortable bed ever, mini bar stocked with everything we needed. You could not fault it. We didn’t find the air con too warm at all although some people seem to, but coming from the UK, we need all the warmth we can get! Food is very subjective, but every meal we had was excellent and exquisitely presented. The breakfast buffet has to be seen to be believed and try the fish tacos at The Lobster House for lunch. Our favourites for dinner were Agave, the Mexican and Toscana, the Italian. Lunch was usually Las Olas which is a relaxed beach restaurant with a different theme each day and usually live music. You can’t beat drinking margaritas with your feet in the sand! The burgers were off the charts and the Mongolian bbq stunning. We only realised that Toscana did a lunchtime buffet on our last day and it was amazing. Quite nice to eat a bit more formally for lunch sometimes. The space where the Martini Bar is, is spectacular, almost like Grand Central Station in New York. Great ambiance and a meeting place for everyone in the evening. Lovely to sit on the couches or at the bar having yet another drink. We aren’t really ones for evening entertainment, but they put on a lot of singers, shows, etc which everyone else seemed to enjoy. A quick visit to Aroma, the coffee shop, for lots of cookies on the way back to our room was a great way to kid ourselves that we weren’t eating too many deserts! The gym was one of the best equipped that we’ve seen on holiday and it was nice to see lots of people in there early in the morning. You have to offset the tequila somehow. As with all great hotels, EPM wouldn’t be anything without its exceptional staff and they really were amazing, just fabulous. So, a shout out to: Martha, Angel and Jose at the EC pool bar - there was always a hole in our glass for that first margarita, it went so quickly! Fabulous drinks and great conversation. Viviana, Ignacio, Manuel, Caesar, Wilberth and Armando at the EC beach, amazing people and thank you so much for what you did for my 50th birthday. Pedro and Gilberto at Toscana for breakfast, always remembering our Bloody Mary and mimosa. Everyone at Agave, incredible food and service, again thank you for my special birthday table and the mariachi band were superb. Nelson ‘because we’re Mexican’ - what a guy. Thank you so much and see you next year. And absolutely every single member of staff that we came into contact with, day in, day out. You are all amazing and we hope to see you again next year. Best regards Bruce and Katherine Gayle Kerr Room 8059

We've just returned from a week at the Excellence Playa Mujeres (EPM) at the start of October. We stayed in a standard swim up room in Building 5, which is one of the quieter buildings at the hotel. We had previously stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun (ERC) and decided to try this hotel on this occasion. We were travelling to celebrate our anniversary and are both in our mid thirties. Arrival: The hotel is approx 30-40 minutes from the airport, we chose a private transfer to get there more quickly than the usual bus. Arrival at the hotel was seamless, being welcomed with hot towels, a glass of Du Bois and very helpful front desk team. I'd like to mention Christopher, who checked us in (and later out as well) for being very friendly, professional and thorough. The room: The hotel is well set-up around a main plaza with room off to the side of the resort and nearer to the beach. Building 5 is one of the more distant buildings and has a view over the spa. While the hotel room was very well decorated and maintained, there are a few points to be made about this room. Our room (5005) was in the middle of the building, opposite the housekeeping store rooms and not far from the stairs and lifts - there was a lot of noise every day from about 9am to 9pm coming from the corridor that could be off-putting to some. If you want a quieter room, I suggest you go for a higher floor. We also had some issues with the indoor/outdoor hot tub which drains straight outside - we had a lot of heavy rain on our first few nights there and water was trying to come up the drainage pipe into the tub, this resulted in the tub making a noise that sounded like someone very enthusiastically playing the bongos. It can be remedied by running the water in the tub to flush the pipes, but at 2am this wasn't all that welcome. A couple of other minor gripes: 1) tea bags are provided but no kettle; 2) the door to the lavatory is partially see through so make sure you're intimately comfortable with your room-mate otherwise you might end up seeing something you didn't want to see; 3) when the weather is bad, the corridors and around the 'lazy river' which this room has access to are terrible for mosquitos. I was severely bitten on the first day, despite wearing 50% DEET spray and as a result we barely used the swim-up pool preferring to be by the main pool where the mosquitos were nowhere near as bad. One massive positive though was that the bed was amazingly comfortable and so were the pillows. I'll admit I'm quite fussy with mattresses and linens, but no problem at all here. There is also a pillow menu if you don't like the pillow you're provided with, but we didn't need that at all. Anniversary: We notified the hotel in advance that we were celebrating our anniversary and arrived to the room to a bowl of fruit, bottle of Du Bois and an amazing double swan towel sculpture that was covered in roses and petals. There is a complimentary anniversary package that includes 15% off spa treatments, 15% off beach dinner, special dinner table arrangements and a champagne breakfast in bed. We didn't go for the beach dinner due to the mosquitos and prefer to do to the restaurant for breakfast so we only really used the special dinner table arrangement, which was roses and petals on the table in the restaurant. The 15% off spa offer is good, but there are also spa offers provided every day and these tended to be better for what we wanted (couples massage) but if you're wanting scrubs, mani/pedi or solo treatments, the 15% off would be more than welcome. The only thing that disappointed me a little is that the hotel also puts 'honeymoon' or 'anniversary' banners on the hotel doors but didn't do it for us. Food / Restaurants: Toscana buffet breakfast and lunch is excellent, such a wonderful range of food and drink, it was often very difficult to choose what to have. I have to mention Tonutioh here, he was such a wonderful waiter, always welcoming us by name, putting extra roses on the table "to be romantic" and generally just being so helpful and friendly that we always wanted him to be there - thank you! We didn't have any bad service during the week at any of the restaurants or bars. My favourite restaurant was Spice. I love Asian food and this didn't disappoint, especially the Dragon's Kiss sushi roll and the teriyaki beef dish. Both delicious. Chez Isabelle (the french restaurant) was a very close second. Beef tenderloin and fillet mignon both exceptional, although the tarte tatin was disappointing. Lobster House was great apart from the fact that it's outside and we were thoroughly bitten - lobster risotto was excellent. The Grill was great for lunches, with great chips and dips and lunchtime favourites. This was our 'usual' for lunches. Aroma, the coffee shop, was just brilliant for sweet treats and ice cream and open very long hours so if we didn't fancy dessert in the restaurant, we just popped in here on the way back to the room. Coconut ice cream, cheesecake ice cream and sugared doughnuts were our favourites. We didn't go to Basmati, Agave or Barcelona so cannot comment on them. We did have room service twice while we were away - on the first night (when it was the Mexican theme night) the food took almost an hour to reach us (despite the in room literature asking to give 35 mins) and was barely warm. This was disappointing. We then had room service later in the week which arrived promptly, was piping hot and delicious. Drinks / Bars: Neither my husband or I are big drinkers, but I don't mind the odd cocktail. We usually had drinks from either Sol or Blue, so I must call out two of the servers around the pool area - Rubi and the other lady (whose name I can't remember, I'm so sorry) were both excellent. They remembered our drinks and even checked how I liked my cocktails (shaken or frozen), so lovely too, always stopped for a chat with us. Cocktails are moderately strong, I can highly recommend the frozen Mango Daiquiri, Caipirinha and Grasshopper. The Spa: We had an 80 minute Excellence Couples Massage plus hydrotherapy on our first day and boy was it good. The hydrotherapy circuit is great, but be aware if you're a bit on the short side like me (I'm only five feet) that some of the steps in/out of the hydrotherapy are quite big, and some of the shower heads in the experience showers are basically at eye level. Not quite so relaxing! The massage itself however was blissful. A massive thank you to Nelly, who was my therapist, and worked wonders on my lower back and calves, which were quite sore after the long flight. She also put flowers in my hair at the end of my treatment, which I didn't realise until my husband mentioned it. Entertainment: Daytime entertainment around the pool and on the beach was great, very enthusiastic but no pressure at all to take part if you didn't want to. Enough to keep you going if you wanted to do things (like archery, aqua aerobics, volleyball etc) but not so busy that you couldn't relax. There was music and a show every night, but we're early birds so tended not to stay out for these. We could hear the music from our room (despite it being the quiet building) and it all sounded great. All in all, despite a few minor gripes, we had a great holiday and came home feeling relaxed and revitalised. This was our second trip to an Excellence hotel and I would absolutely go to their hotels again as the standard of accommodation and service is always great. If I was coming to Mexico again, I would go back to ERC rather than EPM though as I think the ERC probably had better food overall and I preferred the location being further away from Cancun in a quieter area. If I was coming back to EPM, I wouldn't choose a swim up by the spa again. It just wasn't worth it for us. An Excellence Club swim up in either buildings 8 or 9 with a sea view would be better (we tried to upgrade but there was no availability). If you're not bothered by a swim up room, try to get a room on the higher floors, which will offer the best views and be quietest. Many thanks Excellence Playa Mujeres, we had a great trip!
