I stayed for four days and three nights in the Villas at Half Moon Bay. It was a good trip for me and seven of my close friends. We hired three staff, Joy, Venris and Sophia they did a fabulous job. Joy was our cook and listened to our needs and prepared food that was tasty. Venris as our butler was very attentive and provided support to the ladies. Sophia was quiet but effective & efficient. She took care of many of the household chores including cleaning the rooms and washing our clothes. While their fees were included in our package. We felt they warranted additional compensation so we collectively provided something extra. Because of the fine work of the staff and location of this property I will consider it again in the future. If you are there I would encourage to hire a driver by the name of Berry. He knew his way around the island. He was safe and courteous. My only disappointment during my stay happen on Saturday January 12th at the Half Moon Bay Golf Course. We had finished our round and we’re heading out when one of the golfers who was behind us came to the clubhouse and started yelling at our caddies. He complained that we should have let him go in front of us and that we put holes in the surface of the greens with our shoes. We kept pace and didn’t intentionally damage the greens. This tirade was unacceptable and I think motivated by something deeper than golf. The Managment for the course did inquire after the fact about the incident but didn’t truly intervene. The irate golfer I was told is a local resident who has acted badly in the past. Golf is a game played with integrity, honesty and virtue. I was disappointed by this man’s behavior and felt sorry for our caddies, who were excellent by the way but had to endure this unnecessary bullish behavior. I vowed to not play this course again.

This was our third Christmas vacation at Half Moon. We were in Villa 90 for the second time, and the third year with the same great staff of Vinton, Janet and Jovane. We’ve gotten spoiled by them. One of the best things about having such a congenial staff is that there’s no pressure. No need to make any big decisions at all. They handle everything so effortlessly that all we had to do was relax. We each have favorites from Janet’s vast repertoire of dishes, and they were delicious as always. We ate at the villa every night except for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. No need to go anywhere else! Vinton and Jovane are real pros, too. We really enjoy all three of them. The new beach area is really beautiful and quiet. We didn’t even go to the main beach because this was so lovely. There are two new restaurants there, so we didn’t need to go far. We mostly ate at the larger sit-down restaurant further down the beach. The food was pretty solid but the service was mostly average and occasionally very poor. Getting a table was fine, but we were often ignored once we sat down. Long waits for menus, water and food (including botched orders). On our last day, our server collected our napkins *from our laps* after we had finished but were still sitting at the table. That was off putting to say the least. Setting that aside, Half Moon is a wonderful place to vacation, especially if you’re a family or group. The togetherness during downtime at the villa makes it extra special.

Beautiful (but Expensive), Expansive Resort with Excellent Restaurants and Generally Good Service

Half Moon is a unique resort with much more land (400 acres) and beach-front than other resorts. It feels very private and there aren't the crowds that one finds at other resorts. The beaches are beautiful, the room we had was very nice, the food at the 3 restaurants we tried was excellent, and with the exception of the staff at the front desk the service was very good. This is, without a doubt, an expensive resort and it isn't an all inclusive. Add on the meals (which are very, very expensive) or tack on the premium for including the meals and it is very expensive. So, what do they have that justifies the price? First, you're paying for quiet, space and privacy. The resort is massive. Where other resorts (like Secrets which we've also visited) have a small beach area (maybe 50-100 yards that can be packed), the Half Moon beach goes on for maybe 1 mile. We walked along the path by the beach for 15-20 minutes and didn't reach the end of the property. They provide bikes to help make traversing the property easier. And not only is it large, but it is beautifully landscaped. Second, there are resort styles to fit different tastes. We stayed at the cottages which are part of the oldest part of the resort and near Half Moon Bay. Our unit, 1105, was on the ground floor with a bedroom, separate sitting room, large bathroom with a tub and separate shower and two sinks, and a covered patio. It is decorated in a colonial style, so older style furniture. The beach was about 50 feet straight out our door, and we were maybe 100 steps from two restaurants. The front desk, and a water sports center (sailboats, paddle boards, etc.). At most when we went to the beach there would only be 3-6 other people. At the pools there were often no one or just 2-3 people. The property also has the Eclipse section, which is brand new. The units are modern and beautiful, and also has its own pool and restaurant. Finally, there are the Villas which are for larger family vacations and include a cook, butler and maid. (We didn't walk to them and didn't see them.) Third, the service is generally excellent. Although we stayed only 4 nights, the staff at the front desk, restaurants, beach and other places knew our names. I've only had that experience at one other hotel. The staff also seem happy to be there and were constantly checking if there was anything you needed. (At Secrets, as a contrast, the staff seemed to avoid the customers.) My only complaint about the service related to the front desk where they seemed a bit put out from check-in to check-out and all requests in between. Fourth, the food was outstanding. The best restaurant is Sugar Mill (which is across the street and a short shuttle ride away). It provides very attentive service in a beautiful location with fantastic food. (I believe it is the top restaurant in Montego Bay, if not all of Jamaica.) Christopher Golding (the chef or manager) stopped by each evening we visited and not only checked on our experience, but chatted a while. We were also impressed with Il Giardino, an Italian restaurant just off the lobby. Their take on carbonara was fantastic. Again, the chef came out to visit. Seagrape Terrace is the main restaurant for breakfast and lunch, but we did have dinner there one night. The breakfast is a very nice buffet including an omelette station and a juice bar. The staff at Seagrape were a delight. Giorgio Rusconi, the director of food and beverage, should be very proud of his staff at all 3 locations. Half Moon also has a beautiful spa and the therapists are very good. We received some of the best treatments we ever received at Half Moon. There were a few odd or annoying aspects. When on the premium plan (which includes meals), drinks at the coffee shop were not included. Also, while they have cabs waiting out front, one still needs to go through the process of negotiating with them before a trip. It would be nice if the valets would help in this regard.

Everything was wonderful. I was particularly impressed with our butler, Alwayne, cook, Mama Joy and the maid, Paulette. They were not only great at what they did, but they were wonderful people. Half moon resort was quite beautiful, the restaurants were superb and all the people I met along the way were very nice, friendly and really seemed to care.

Very enjoyable family vacation. We all stayed at the Rose Hall Villas. Beautiful ocean views! Our cook Mama Joy was the best! She cooked us delicious meals every day. Our butler Alwayne was terrific! He gave us personalized attention for all our needs and questions. He attended to every detail to make sure our stay went flawlessly. Our maid Paulette kept our villa immaculate. Please ask for them if you stay at the Villas.
