    The Best at Disney

I asked my daughter what she wanted to do for her 12th birthday and she asked for a trip to Disney, staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (I raised her right!). We had stayed here when the kids were little and it was very memorable and she wanted to return. So, we booked a long weekend trip in a Savannah View Room with Club Level Access to celebrate her birthday. This was our 14th trip staying at a Disney resort and our 13th trip staying at a Disney Deluxe (non-DVC) resort and it was my family’s favorite stay! Why? This is the most interesting, unique, themed resort. You do NOT feel like you are in Florida. The animals are super cool, but it’s more than just the animals. All the details that have gone to create an experience where you feel you are in Africa, from the special oven at Jiko, to the lobby and hallways filled with curated, original African art and artifacts, to the room doors all being themed and each one different, and of course, the best part is the people that work at this resort! So many of them are originally from countries in Africa. They will share with you little bits of their homeland. From the moment we arrived, the cast members at Animal Kingdom Lodge made us feel this was a special trip. On arrival, a Club Level cast member was waiting for us outside the lobby with a welcome sign with our name on it. We’ve stayed Club Level at other Disney resorts and have not received such a warm welcome. We checked in and were given an amazing suite. One of the cast members (Jason from Cape Town!) looked for my daughter to wish her a happy birthday and was super funny pretending he could not find her. The food and drinks at the Club lounge were delicious. Do not miss the soups and stews, and if you are there on a Saturday, they have yummy falafel dish. One of the evenings, we had dinner at Sanaa on the Kidani side, and as alway, everything was interesting (in a good way) and tasty. We visited multiple parks and never had to wait long for a bus. This is the best kept secret at Disney. Everyone thinks it’s far, but it isn’t.

Bus system is a hot nightmare

If you are staying on site for the transportation from the resort to the park and other locations, you’d likely be better off staying off site and hitching a ride in a windowless van. Buses didn’t bother announcing which of their 2 stops they were stopping at, and everything on site looks the same, so unless you have made that mistake a couple times before, or just have a photographic memory, you may be in for an ungodly long walk back to your resort, in temperature roughly that of Mercury. And that was the good bus trip- waiting for the bus to Disney Springs for a lunch reservation, the bus approached the stop, and I guess to show the driver you wish to get on you must lay down in the road, because the driver basically does a rolling stop and drives RIGHT BY ME and keeps right on going. Disney charges a $50 fee for missing your reservation, so thanks AK bus system! Next time at least let me throw a 50 bill in the fire pits so I can somewhat enjoy wasting money. I used to think this is just a value resort problem, but it seems every resorts’ bus system is about as fun as having Shaquille O Neal as your proctologist. If you HAVE to stay on site, make it a resort with boat or monorail access, because the buses are routinely miserable, and this far, when they bother to pick me up, not air conditioned, which is cool, it’s only 5000 degrees out here. Oh and there’s a few animals, but even they have no desire to be out in this hell.

    Great Disney holiday

We stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for 1 week, the first week of the UK school holidays. The hotel: On arrival we asked for a bunk bed room if possible which they accommodated easily. The room was dated but functional but unfortunately was right next to the queues for the WDW resort buses being the fact we were so jet lagged we managed the first night and the following morning after a couple of calls and conversations were moved to a partial Savannah room. They were great we headed to the park and when we came back they had moved our bags to the new room so all waiting. The new room had recently been renovated and whilst no bunk beds but two queen beds was much nicer in terms of decor and was incredibly modern in feel especially the bathroom. The outlook was great seeing all types of animals. I would therefore strongly recommend asking for a Savannah or partial Savvannah room as this is definitely the USP of this hotel. I would say the hotel was more of a 4* than 5*- to be fair you are at the parks most of the time so it is very much personal preference. We stayed at the Disney Yacht club 5years ago and all agreed AK was fine but preferred Yacht Club. Buses:I had read buses to WDW parks were unreliable but we had no problems at all. The longest we waited was for the water parks but I think these do run on a 30min schedule. Food wise - We tried the Mara and Bomo at AK for food both fine nothing exceptional. We were on the Disney Deluxe Dining plan so think these would both especially Bomo have been quite expensive without. At Mara you can get snacks for breakfast which worked well when we didn’t want a huge buffet - bagels, yoghurts and cereal are all classed as snacks on the dining plan. The dining plan worked well for us at the costs of breakfasts in places like the Crystal Room in Magic Kingdom for x4 adults as our children (13&11) here are both classed as adults we would have been paying $250+tips for breakfast which seemed incredibly expensive. Top tip for food was Teppan Edo in Epcot and Flying Fish at the Boardwalk phenomenal food. We had lots of snacks left and any meals left over at the end can be exchanged for x3 snacks, we cashed these all in in the shop for sweets to take home. All in all WDW is amazing and AK was absolutely fine. For the amount we paid it seemed quite a lot but seeing the cost of park tickets, meals and snacks I think without the all in package we could have come away with a huge bill. Our favourite park this time was AK due to the amazing Avatar ride so being so close (5mins) was fab especially as the weather was so stormy we could head back easily and quickly if it all got too much.

We all know Disney is beautiful, but I haven’t been there in three years and I was very pleased with the security. Metal detectors at the entrance and paper straws and no plastic covers on the drinks. I am so happy Disney is trying to collaborate to eliminate plastic. Bottles should be next.

We were in Orlando and decided to catch a Disney Resort bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We were not staying there, just wanted to see it. It is VERY nice, at least the lobby is LOL There is lots of stuff to see and people are standing around with various artifacts - you can talk with them and get info about the different objects. There is an animal viewing area outside. Giraffes, rams, etc are roaming around in the courtyard. If you have a room facing this area, a giraffe just might come within 10 feet of your balcony! Very cool place!
