    A real Carribean experience

This is the real Carribean experience, a mid size older hotel right on palm fringed Bavaro beach. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. The swimming pools are surrounded by "Palapas" with an abundence of lounge chairs. The beach is lined with palm trees and "palapas" (straw covered shades) again with an abundance of lounge chairs. The rooms have all been updated to modern standards with a level of comfort as good as most resort hotels. The grounds and public areas are spotlessly clean with staff constantly mentaining these areas. I was particularly impressed with management's ability to provide a level of comfort and service to their guests. The resaurent buildings are an archectural delight with beautiful woodwork and cathedral ceilings. The food is excellent with a variety of pork, beef, chicken, fish and a variety of vegetables. Besides the buffet restaurent there are four "a la carte" restaurents which, unlike other resorts, do not require reservations. The staff always seem to be smiling and are happy to service their guests. You will probably not be surprized that I have visited this hotel many times and will be returning their later this month.

We was a great relaxing time. Workers at this resort are very friendly. Did not hover over us. Clean rooms. Well taken care of. Very affordable. They had good entertainment every night. The food is not American but you can Lways find something to eat.

    Quiet, affordable, worth it

This is my second stay here. At about the same time of year. (Oct). This place is a small, family friendly resort with just over 400 units. The food is consistently average/above average...but all good to eat; hits the spot. Liquor is on the lower side for quality. But there is plenty of it so bottoms up. No swim up bar but really, what’s a short walk for a refill? The pools are nice, the grounds are well kept and the rooms are more than adequate for a tropical stay. A/C seems to work well. The beach seems to always have plenty of space to host guests. Well kept, constant security presence, friendly stall all around. WiFi is free in Lobby and is reasonable cost for the rest of the availability on the resort. I realize many people have complained about WiFi not being free. My take...get off your phone and be on vacation. Social media can wait until you stop by the lobby. Hardly a reason to stay away. But as of my trip. $10 U.S. for 5 days. You’d spend more on bad coffee anywhere in the world. So, let it go already!!!! The sales pitches: YES!!!! That’s their job. If it was yours, you’d keep trying as well. All of my interactions were friendly, only a few persisted beyond two interactions. After that, I just spent time chatting with them. Very friendly group of people. This will likely tick people off. But here we go. Would it kill you to learn more Spanish than “Hola and Buenos Dias”? It’s a Spanish speaking nation. Most staff speak enough English to be helpful. Those who don’t....well it’s not part of their job description. Yes this place has more European guests: German, Russian, Polish, etc. But as someone who speaks some of most of those languages, I found everyone friendly and willing to suffer through my accent to have decent conversations. Don’t forget to tip the staff: drivers, bellhops, front desk, housekeeping, wait staff....just drop $1 here and there. Goes a long way. Oh...learn some names “Como se Llama (pronounce Yama)” and make an effort to greet them by name. You’d do that in your own country..right?!?!? The Animations team is friendly and energetic. Different levels of English (see my notes about learning some phrases). All of them greeted me daily with friendly tones, hand shakes and “bro hugs”. PARTICIPATE!!! Yes It’s corny, yes is repetitive at times. But who cares. Just do it. It’s more fun than sitting there. Excursions: plenty of options at hotel. One benefit of booking with hotel...you have corporate backing if something goes awry. You can get good deals from the beach vendors but seriously; Put in the effort to be friendly and their suggestions get better and they offer their phone numbers as a problem solver. If you go with a beach vendor negotiate. Say “Es muy caro”. The numbers start moving a little. But be warned. Less money can end up as less of a trip in some cases. You get what you pay for. All I’m saying is that traveling anywhere has its ups and downs. This place can be a blast if you let it. Or it can be quiet and simple. If you just accept that...you’ll have fun

Clientele: 50% Russians, 30% Europeans, 15% from other Latin countries, 5% from USA and Canada.  Here's what I like and don't like: Likes:  Size - It's mid-sized, perfect for me. Gym - fully equipped and opens daily. Very often I was the only one there. Food - it has one of the best food I've had anywhere. I only ate at the main buffet Mirador, which offers enough variety. I have yet to find a dish I don't like. Above said, Vik did not offer big shrimps even once during my stay. Quiet weekends - Out of the many resorts I've been to, this is the only hotel that did not have a sudden surge of locals descending on the weekends. Good beach - no seaweed issue Security - I did not bother to rent the little safe. No thefts. .  I was approached many times to complete their survey about the hotel in general and rate every show. Dislikes: Daily games by the entertainment staff - very seriously lacking: bocca and darts only, nothing else. Dance lessons are bachata only, no other styles. Evening shows - very poor, and the lighting for the shows is atrocious. The only exception is the Michael Jackson show. The shrubs need trimming. Trainees of animation team don't speak English at all.  Water sports - none in week 1, even though it's yellow flag Door - On my last day, the door won't lock - anyone can open the door without the key card. Don't know how long it's been like that. I did not lose anything though. 4 days in a row, the cleaning lady forgot to put bottles of water.

The average mark for this place on TripAdvisor is pretty accurate. I would also mark it as 3.5 out of 5. If you are looking for a luxurious place, this is not for you. If you are looking for an inexpensive small relaxing place with a beautiful beach - you will like this place. Don't book "ocean view" room - in the best case scenario, you will get the same basic room with the ocean somewhere far away on the horizon. For the real "ocean view" go for "ocean front" on the top floor of building #5. Even if you by "ocean front", at the check in be prepared that they will try to put you in the building #4 with partial ocean view (our story). Just insist on getting what you paid for. Avoid rooms on the ground floor by the entrance to the building: there will be always many drunk people passing by your door every few minutes. Food was ok. The beach is the best part of the hotel, but there is always a chance that there will be algae in the water. For diving & snorkelling trips, go to the Pelicano Sports dive shop - highly recommended.
