I am writing this Jan 25, 2020 from the quiet pool of BP Cayo Leventado, we have to leave tomorrow. We have travelled quite a bit, lots of times to the Caribbean over 20 years and 4th time to DR, so I feel I can provide an objective opinion. Like many, I read Trip Advisor reviews carefully before booking, I automatically discard the worst reviews and treat with skepticism the overly glowing reviews. My presumption on the negative reviews was right on, based on my positive expetience those reviewers clearly had an axe to grind for other reasons. To my surprise the glowing reviews are accurate. From my past work experience, there aren't complaints but only areas for improvement, so let's get that out of the way first, this is all that keeps this property from being a full 5 star, it's a solid 4.5. Firstly, and unfortunately it is your first exposure is the check in procedure at the mainland reception before getting on the ferry. We had about 35 on our coach and the limited staff were overwhelmed and it took far too long. BP should have anticipated this and moved extra staff over temporarily from the island. Secondly the booking procedure for al la carte restaurants was inefficient, you need to get on this as soon as you arrive. We tried our first morning and only got to book 3 out of 7 opportunities and we checked multiple times every days. On to the positives: Staff - sorry but I am not naming most names as those omitted may be offended. Top to bottom they were exceptional, gracious, friendly, helpful. An example, one of the gardeners (who typically don't interact with guests) was trimming trees next to our villa and I engaged him being curious what he was doing and without asking he chopped a coconut out of the tree and chopped the top off so we could enjoy the milk. That is indicative ofp all the staff. I did feel sorry for our butler Emmanuel, without being obtrusive, he was trying his best to help us but we are very low maintenance and we had to keep declining. The bar tenders at the main (quiet pool) where we spent most of out time were terrific, attentive, friendly. Also a shout out to Jorge at the lobby bar, at the nightly entertainnent he could read my mind and always came with a fresh drink at the right time. All the staff were cheerfully able to help this poor Anglo with my severely fractured Spanish, smiles and a laugh are the universal language. Cleaning - the whole property top to bottom is spotless, staff never stop cleaning, trimming, painting, polishing but are never obtrusive and always friendly. Room - holy sh-t, we booked a Junior Suite, I have never had a room so big, didn't have the outdoor Jacuzzi but didn't want it. Huge covered veranda with couch and 3 chairs. You could gave a party put out there. It was super quiet, all we could hear were the crashing waves below us and the birds. Comfy canopy bed and huge bathroom. Food - I don't understand those that complained, we were both delighted with the quality and variety of the buffet. We found it difficult to decide among the offerings. The Mediterranean restaurant was very good, DAN PABLO was over the top exceptional. Service and food there was absolute 5 star elegant dining. A suggestion would be to provide prepared lunch snacks at the main pool, pizza, wraps etc. Site - warning if you have mobility issues, you will have difficulties. Our villa #7 was the furthest from everywhere which wasn't an issue for us, the walk whuch is hilly wears off a few calories and if you want to ride, electric cart/taxis are always going past to hop aboard. Because there are no large vehicles, only the above taxis which travel in a one way loop the road pathways are narrow and meander through the big trees and mature foliage, very serene and private. Kids - we had some concern about this dropping adults only but this was not an issue. There isn't a lot for them to do, so there arent many and those here are mostly younger that stay with their parents and are well behaved and a delight to watch. Vibe - this is a mostly older crowd with a smattering of newlyweds. That said it is quiet and laid back, what we like. If you want the full on party scene, go to Punta Cana. Beaches - there is a large and lovely public beach at the one end of the island but that is where the day trippers and cruise ship passengers come to, it is crowded and hectic. They do not have access to the resort. The resort's private beach is at the opposite end of the island. Unfortunately it has received severe storm damage and has been compressed to about half its size but even that didn't seem crowded. Construction is currently underway to repair the damage. Summary - I would highly recommend Cayo Leventado for all the above, here is the kicker. We don't like to go to the same place twice as we prefer to always try something new but we would add BPCL to the list of one that we would return to. Certainly considering for next year.

    Beware! Not a relaxing experience!

I would highly discourage staying at the Luxury Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado if you want a seamless relaxing vacation. The stay here was stressful and involved lots of time spent waiting and begging for service that should be easy. The hotel just doesn’t function properly and it makes for a terrible stay. We have stayed at over 20 resorts in the Dominican Republic and this experience was the most exhausting. There are incredible resorts in the DR. Find better ones like the two Club Meds, the two Secrets, or Chic Punta Cana where you can truly escape and let go. I like to give honest reviews, no properties are all good or all bad, so here is both to help others decide. The good: -The hotel is set amongst stunningly beautiful natural surroundings! Cayo Levantado is gorgeous. The beaches are beautiful, both the hotel beach and the public beach. The grounds are well-manicured and lush. -The bars use good quality alcohol, no weird cheap brands like some other all-inclusive resorts. -Although most service was horrible as I’ll mention below, three people stood out and need to be applauded. Dinanyelis and Carolina in the buffet were always attentive and sweet. Restaurant manager Miguel saved us from absolute frustration and rescued our vacation so it was not an utter failure. They deserve to work for a better company and I hope that nicer resorts on the island poach them. The bad: -Lots of waiting and begging for dinner reservations. We arrived to the lobby to check in, which was on the Samaná peninsula. You have to take a boat to the hotel so once you check in you wait. The boats come every one to two hours depending on when you arrive. We arrived at 5pm, checked in, then we had to wait 1.5 hours. There is no WiFi, no bar or snacks, just chairs to sit and wait with lots of mosquitoes biting you. We got to the hotel on the island around 7pm and were met by someone from reception that gave us a key and a map and left. We didn’t know where to go or what to do, no orientation, so we started asking random people questions. Our first order of business was dinner. After traveling most of the day and waiting to get to the actual hotel we just wanted a nice sit-down dinner. Someone from reception pointed is to a computer kiosk to make dinner reservations. Even though the booking says you have a la carte dinner reservations for each night of your stay available, it’s just not true. There were no restaurants with space. Another employee we asked for help said that these are “chances” each night for reservations. It’s like a lottery. We finally talked to a manager and he said to sit and wait and he’d check if we could get into a restaurant. Unfortunately, we waited and waited with no word until 9pm. With such a long wait we were hopeful, but the manager finally came back and said nothing was available so we should go to the buffet before it closed. We ended up going to the buffet to find it picked over at the end of the night and looking very sad. The manager said for the other nights we could try again on the computer or the hotel app online or come talk to guest services in the morning. We went first thing to guest services to try to get dinner reservations and the woman there simply told us to keep checking the computer in the reception or the app. From our arrival until our departure there was never an available reservation on the computer or the app. A very frustrating experience. I guess the expectation is guests have to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day in the buffet. When we finally did get into a restaurant with the help of Miguel mentioned above, the restaurants appeared half full and only two of the four restaurants are open each night. That’s not the all inclusive experience we paid for. Several other guests were complaining about the lack of any available dinner reservations to guest services too. -The air conditioning and WiFi didn’t work for the first half of our trip in the room. We had to call guest services about four times each day to remind them to check it. Finally after much follow up, they sent someone at the end of our trip to fix both. -Housekeeping was also unorganized. The second day they never came so we had to call several times to get service. The next days housekeeping left things like used rags, cleaner or used sheets in the room and forgot to empty the trash cans. -This is a sleepy quiet resort. Don’t come expecting lots to do after dark. The pool bars close at 6pm, the lobby bar at midnight and the minifridges are stocked once a stay, so it’s very inconvenient if you want a cocktail on your balcony at night, the bars at the resort are closed and you already used the three mini bottles provided on the first day. -The hotel is dated, including the items in the rooms. The mattress is a hard old-fashioned box spring. You can feel each wire spring. This is definitely not like the memory foam or pillow-topped beds at other “luxury” resorts in the DR that add those comfort touches for the price you are paying.

Had been looking to go to the Island, for many years, ended up going to mexico, cuba Bahamas even other places in the Dominican.Cayo Levantado is a cut above the others in many ways. The service was unbelievable, one the 1st day our butler showed us around our room,i asked where i could get some ice as i like to sit on the deck and have a beer.An hour later and every day a bucket of ice cold beer was delivered, that was above restocking the mini fridge. My wife walks with a cane and i was so worried about getting around. We uses the little electric cart everywhere we went, didn't matter where we were we waited no longer then 2 minutes,a quick call was all that was needed. The service at the al carts and the Buffet was exceptional,as soon as a glass was empty,it was filled, anything we asked for was no issue. The staff were always pleasant, friendly and helpful. After the 2nd day,we found out we were put in the family building.Saw a few kids, with no issues or noise. They were always smiling and enjoying themselves. The beach is under construction with about 1 third fenced off, with back hoe and some workers trying to repair the hurricane damage. There is a staff member who keeps everyone away from the construction site. This was the 1st beach i every saw cong shells the size of 2 hands just wash up with the waves on the beach, there were lots to go around. Tuff swimming as it drop's off and there lots of pieces of coral and small shells.Saw a few small fish snorkeling, but the waves were too ruff when we were there. The towel game had a different twist here. You got towels in your room, and at the beach and pools, nobody was keeping track off them.So i noticed people just left them on chairs when they were done making it look as if they were reserved. The public beach was awesome, white chairs are free, blue ones are in better shape and cost 5 dollars for 2 for the day. Some of the best snorkeling by the pelicans i have ever seen. There is a little village off the public beach with restaurants and take outs, just follow the sound of the rooster, bought a beer there for 5,which was equal to 2 Canadian beer in size. All in all was a good trip, enjoyable resort,7 days went quick Enjoy

Unique place, solid 4 stars but not luxury

Recently we spent a week on little island of Cayo Levantado at Bahia Principe Luxury resort. Being on the beautiful island with one resort only was unique experience, very nice stay, but luxury should be dropped from the hotel name. For that reason I can not give it 5 stars as expectations could not match the reality. The resort grounds are very well maintained, food was very good in all the places we eat, people are very friendly, but service is not up to the luxury level. The butler service (not that we need it) - non existent, on the 4th day of our stay a guy in the cart service noted our room number saying I'm your butler. This was first and last time I've seen him. Bars - service very, very slow, they keep disappearing behind doors for a long time, very limited selection of decent alcohol and if you point to the display at the bar, they say "oh, this is an extra charge". So, why to have it on the shelf? Place it there with a sign "Extra charge" for stuff that is included even in Cuba. With 3 people at the bar you have to wait 15 minutes. Not acceptable. Not luxury and not 5 stars here. Dinners – the worst system from all. They pre-book your dinners for 3 nights that is almost impossible to change when you are with friends and want to match it. Most of the a la carte were half empty. Again, not efficient and out-dated method. Why in not to have them all first come first serve as in modern hotels (like Palladium). We are on vacations, we have time and can wait having a drink until table becomes available. The drink services are a hit and miss everywhere. They either serve you quickly or you have to wait for a very long time, especially at the beach or in the buffet restaurant. Often the waiter just ran with one glass at the time pretending to be too busy to notice you. Evening entertainment? Nothing special. One night there was great women singer, other nights they just play music with Abba’s songs over and over again. We are on Caribbean Island, we have not come here to listen what we have at home. At 10:30 PM everything stops. No music, no bar service. They tell you to go to the public beach for a disco. With the hotel guest average in their 50s or 60s who wants to go there? Why they can not have a piano or nice music for people who want to stay, have a conversation or just have a drink and relax. Many 3 starts hotels have it better organized. Another improvement area – the cart service. It’s OK when you call from the room, they are pretty quick to pick you up, but if you are coming from private beach, you may wait forever. No place to call from, not even bench to sit on. Other than points above we had nice stay in clean, well-appointed room, good food, nice weather and beautiful surroundings. We may comeback to Bahia chain when they change few things I mentioned and implement the true vacations spirit (ex. Paradisus or Palladium).

Fantasy Island! This is now at the top of our list for best resort of this franchise. Food was amazing at the restaurants and the buffets were really good. Room was gorgeous with the balcony jacuzzi tub. Pools were so nice and never busy. We spent our mornings at the public beach for great snorkeling and then the afternoons by the pool. The view from the elevator walkway was breath taking. Special thanks to: Walkey at the lobby bar, Yrineo the smiling grill master and our Butler Emmanuella they truly made our trip special along with many other staff members. We truly felt like VIP’s(10th consecutive trip to this franchise) at this resort.
