I'll start with the positives- The resort it's self is stunning and very well kept. Pools are a great size, and I love how there are two pools, 1 is a more party pool and the other is more chill. The staff was very friendly The beach was so clean and always had a dj. The drinks were always made amazing, the servers were also so cheerful and so polite. Going into the varadero town was stunning and there is lots of flea markets. The bus with take you there and back for 5 pesos. Negatives- Pools closed everynight at 7pm Our room was not very clean, the tub was pretty dirty. We had no toilet paper on arrival, and actually had to find the housekeeper and pay for the towel paper. The snack bars sucked every day. Our room had mould in it as well as the pillows did too. The food at the buffet is meh, but not the worst. It's Cuba can't really comment on the food, it is what it is. All and all our room was the biggest complaint. Besides that it was a beautiful stay and not a day of Rain. We will definitely be back , but will make sure to stay in the more updated room. Things I suggest to you bring with you. 1. TOILET PAPER 2. Snacks - chips, cookies stuff like that. 3. face clothes 4. Aloe vera gel

    Great Grounds & Staff.

We were here for four nights in February. The staff were always helpful and smiling. The grounds were well kept and attractive. The Beach was AMAZING!. The buffets were okay, especially for Cuba. The buildings themselves were showing a bit of age. A few elevators were out the entire time we were there, but you learn to cope, and which ones to use. My 60 year old knees loosened up enough that by the time I left, maybe stairs were actually good for me. The pools were fabulous, and not over-crowded at all. We were on the east side, so that pool almost felt like a private pool for us. The Garden Bar and it's Pina Coladas was my favourite, with the east side bar and its mojitoes a close second. I heard some grumblings about bar service from some guests, but I never had a problem. I would make sure to tip my first drink, and then every other trip to the bar. I know I know, it's all inclusive, but if you look after the staff a little, they look after you a LOT! By my last night, the barkeep at the Garden Bar was making my Pina Coladas as I walked up, no ordering needed! There were 3 sitdown, a-la carte restaurants. We were able to get reservations at all three, though I heard other guests couldn't get any. Basically be at the sign up desk 15-30 minutes early, about 8:30 or 9:00 am on the first morning of your stay, and you should be okay. The food at these restuarants was very good, and a nice change from the buffets. I'd happily come back to the Laguna Azul, and my Pina Coladas!

We arrived at the hotel to complete the second part of a two part vacation on March 6 for a 4 night stay. We had booked a suite expecting to have a nice room with an area we could relax in. The suite in our bungalow instead was far from what we expected and the amenities were terrible. Though the common areas of this hotel are nice and well maintained the private rooms are not. The closet walls in our suite definitely had water intrusion and were black in some areas. The towels were stained and old and several days we didn't even get clean towels until late in the day and don't bother to ask for wash clothes. We never did get any even after having asked. The tv in our sitting area didn't function and when we reported it to the front desk on the first day it still hadn't been addressed by the time we left. The mini fridge was leaking and moldy so we couldn't even keep bottled water in it. The buffet dining area provides lots of selection but the a la carte dining is nothing to write home about. This may have been a 5 star hotel at one time but it definitely is no longer that.

Returned from a 7 night 8 day stay March 13-21, 2020. This resort is small in comparison to others we have been to but that being said it did make it easier to get where we needed in a quick walk. We paid a little extra and upgraded to the Relax Suite Oceanfront and we are very glad that we did. On arrival, there was a mix-up and our room wasn't available so we slept in an ocean view room for one night which had a spectacular view and two queen beds. If this was the view from here we were excited to see the next one. The next morning we were moved to the third floor of building 19 Room 19322. We had a view of the ocean from every room, the huge bathroom, the living room with a massive balcony and our King room, it was well worth the upgrade. Our chambermaid was a wonderful lady called Oda, our room was cleaned and made as soon as we got back from breakfast, she made animals from our towels and bedding and left fresh flowers when she could too. Huge shout out to you and all of your hard work and smiles every day of our stay!! Not only were the views priceless but the location being oceanfront meant that it was very quiet and away from the busy pools and any nightlife, it was relaxing. Along with upgrading to 'relax' we also had access to a private restaurant, private pool, and jacuzzi whirlpool. The private restaurant was menu selection for both breakfast and lunch and had many choices all served in fine dining expectation and straight from the kitchen fresh and hot. Breakfast choices varied from omelets, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, oatmeal, fruit and bread. Lunch choices varied from hot soup, salad, tempura shrimp, pork, beef, vegetables, and deserts. It was a lovely quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of the buffet. Our server most mornings was David Aguero, he was a quiet but well-mannered gent. The private pool and whirlpool that we had access to were very clean and well maintained. There wasn't a rush to reserve seats, we would place our towels on ones that we wanted on our way to breakfast around 9-9:30 am. There are many areas of the pool to chose from for seating whether you want a bed with an umbrella, one with a big shaded roof or even a double bed with a pagoda. Every morning when we went to tan Mr. Toni Gomez would come to greet us and ask if we would like cushions for our lounger beds. I would highly recommend them to make your relax by the pool a lot more relaxing as otherwise, you are laying on slats that can become uncomfortable. He greeted us every day that we were there and worked very hard to keep the pool and surrounding areas clean and well maintained. Very hard worker indeed!! In and around the pool areas you will be pleasantly surprised with well-manicured gardens and flowers. We had the pleasure of meeting several men who go above and beyond in doing this, a huge shout out to Alexey Duarte Ruiz who took his time to say good morning to us and also gift us with fresh flowers. In the afternoon around this pool, there is also an outside bar that they set up. One of the waiters who not only goes above and beyond in the restaurant but also went out of his way to talk with people around the pool and serve drinks to them was Mr. Christian Menendez. This kind of young man shook our hand every day and his English was amazing, for someone as young as he is we feel like he was one of the best staff that we came across on our trip. He went out of his way and was always smiling and ensuring everyone was happy and taken care of. Christian, you will go far in life and we wish you all the best for the future. We spent the majority of our time in the 'Relax Zone' but we spent time in every other area of the resort as well. On arrival, all be it 4:00 am we were greeted by very nice reception staff and an immaculately clean huge main lobby. Every experience that we had with reception staff members was a positive one and we have no complaints at all. We vacationed with Sunwing and our hotel representative was Janal, another wonderful staff member who was always available when we needed him and always had a smile for you however busy he was. In the evenings we ate at the main buffet and one night we did eat at the Japanese A La Carte. The buffet does have a large selection from salads, hot/cold selections, deserts. bread etc. Their hot food selections were also quite a wide variety of Italian pasta, fresh fish, pork, etc. Our only complaint would be that a lot of the dishes weren't labeled so you would have to guess what you were taking. One night my husband took what he thought was a chicken pasta dish but it turned out to be fish which he isn't a fan of so it was a shame to waste this food. Most evenings I will admit that our plates were filled with either a rice dish or the fresh flatbread pizzas made by one very busy and dedicated chef. The waiters and waitresses at the buffet were always helpful, polite and accomodating. The Japanese night we had was fantastic and the chef put on a great show as he cooked up beef, chicken, and calamari with vegetables. You get to choose your starter, main meal, and dessert. It made for a great change of pace in food choices from the buffet so highly recommended. The nightlife on this trip we can't comment on as we were generally back in our room before the entertainment shows even started. The shows don't start until 9:30 pm but we heard that they were all very good and the actors and actresses were talented. After dinner we generally walked towards the lobby bar where we would grab a drink and then relax on their beautiful patio that overlooks the whole resort, it's a very relaxing place to hang out whether during the day or night. The lobby bar is always pretty busy and we did find that we had to wait quite a long time to be served. Although we never got coffee from here we were told that they serve up the best coffee and other specialty coffee drinks in the resort. When we weren't around our private pool we would walk lots over to the main pool area and check out the swim-up bar as well as the area behind to have our large drink cups replenished with on tap cold beer or cocktails. After trying several drinks on our stay we found most tasted watered down or had little taste. Their mixers like coke aren't like ours. Top pick for us was the on-tap beer, rum (double=single) and coke and Tequila (double) sunrise. We attended the 'Acuabar' several times a day and their staff were always happy and smiling and looked after us, they even helped us celebrate St Patricks Day when we gave them our hats and novelties. Shout out to the great staff that we dealt with: Yoselin Kalis, Yanet Vargas, Felix Cejas, Chavelis Valdes, Tony Talavera & Reniel Reyes. If in-between meals you get hungry or fancy a snack then you also have the choice of the snack bar that is open 24/7. There is a lot of seating and it's mostly all shaded so it's a nice break from the hot sun. On one side of the place, there were cheeses/meats/bread with a panini press close by to make your toasted sandwiches. In another area, there was fresh fruits and desserts. In the middle were hot meat dishes, rice, pasta, and others. On the opposite side of the place closest to the beach, there were staff cooking fresh pork, burgers, hotdogs, fries, and pizza. As well as a bar in there too it was a great place to stop by whenever you're feeling peckish. Across from this snack bar is also an ice cream parlor too, we never visited hear but heard it was delicious. Right next to our room and this bar is the beautiful beach access. The sand is soft and white and the ocean is just out of this world with the turquoise colors. The beach area is pretty big and there are a lot of shaded umbrellas and beds. There are also sailboats along the beach, a catamaran, and another bar area. The ocean water to us was warmer than the pool water but we were there in March so it's just the end of their spring going into summer. Quite a few people were swimming in the ocean and other than the odd bit of seaweed the beaches were very clean. Overall we enjoyed our stay. If we were to have any tips, advice or recommendations they would be the following: Tip when you can, even $1 or $2 here and there goes a long way and those staff members will take care of you even more so and they appreciate your gratitude. They all work VERY hard. Bring some gifts for the staff if you can. Small things that don't cost much to us cost lots to them. We brought nylons, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair ties, tea towels, pens, pencils, cold medications, coloring books, hackie sacks, deodorant sticks, gardening gloves, baseball hats, flip flops. Just ensure you bring things for both men, women, and children. One couple we saw brought a few smart shirts for men, medium-sized and then gave a waiter his choice of color at the end of their stay, things like this are so truly appreciated and you could see on their faces how appreciative they all were. The drinks like I mentioned weren't great at the pool, seemed watery. Drinks at the lobby bar seemed a little better. Poolside cups are very small so if you prefer a bigger sized drink then we would recommend you bring your cups. We brought those insulated bubba cups along with some silicone straws and we washed them out every night, they kept drinks icy cold and ensured we didn't need refills nearly as often. If there is a drink that you like so for us it was vodka, we brought a bottle for our room so we had a sip to have on our balcony in the evening. I am sure we have left out lots but any questions please don't hesitate to ask me whatever you'd like to know :)
