North of the city in Westchester County, Pound Ridge opened in 2008 to high golf-press accolades. A Pete Dye design, with an assist from his son Perry, the course occupies over 170 acres of Empire State highlands. The track climbs and drops through hardwood forests and rock formations crisscrossed with streams, mounds and hummocks.

Known to favour crafty design mischief and visual impact, Pete Dye's design is most aptly displayed at the 160-yard 15th hole. It's dubbed "Headstone," after a large rock outcropping that juts into the right side of the vast and narrow 9,000-square-foot green.
